  • Experiences of Place in the Work of Ed Ruscha and Andreas Gursky
ACCESS: CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN EDUCATION 2010, VOL. 29, NO. 1, 10–20 Destination anywhere: Experiences of place in the work of Ed Ruscha and Andreas Gursky Kristen Sharp RMIT University ABSTRACT This paper examines how the meaning of place and identification with place can be produced through photographic images of the city. As an aesthetic, social and cultural practice, photography provides a way of imagining place and a means of knowing and classifying the urban spaces. Photographic images of the city can be understood as a form of aesthetic knowledge production, which represents and enacts the experiences of the urban environment. The urban spaces imaged by artists Ed Ruscha and Andreas Gursky, in the 1960s and 1990s respectively, actively represent and perform the symbolic and material properties of urban spaces. By exploring the ways that these artists read and map city spaces and how they articulate an experience of the city that engages with the identification of place, an argument is presented about how this process and imaging can be situated in relation to anthropological and geographic concepts of place. More specifically, what this paper explores is how their work demonstrates a sense of place that is complex and mobile, which can oscillate between notions of site specificity, identification and non- place as defined by Marc Augé. The significance of place in a global world In recognition of contemporary processes of globalisation there has been reconsideration of the meanings of space and place in a period defined by “time-space compression” (Harvey, 1990) and flows of people, objects and ideas (Urry, 2000, 2003; Appadurai, 1996).

  • P-Rock Paradigms, Queer Hip Hop and Riot Grrrl Whiteness
dig me out Discourses of Popular Music, Gender and Ethnicity edited by Maria José Belbel / Rosa Reitsamer. Art Centre Arteleku, Spain/Austria 2009 P-Rock Paradigms, Queer Hip Hop and Riot Grrrl Whiteness Exploring the intersections of music, gender, and ethnicity in feminist zines by Red Chidgey and Elke Zobl with Haydeé Jiménez Photo by Elke Zobl Ablaze! is a fanzine because we are fanz, fanatics, zealots, extremists, we are wild for stuff we’re wild for and that fact can’t change, except these passions are so real they have sell-by dates, determined by my own chemistry. - Karren Ablaze of UK fanzine Ablaze!, 1993. Zines could almost go by another name: the passion press. Fuelled by love rather than profit, zines are homemade, idiosyncratic, arty journals, which are as eccentric as their makers’ desires. Emerging in the early twentieth century from science fiction writing communities, these periodicals mutated into Xeroxed Football, TV, Rap, and Punk fanzines alongside the rise of everyday office technology and post-war fandoms. Zines are crucial to the development of subcultural identities and political ideologies. Fans themselves become cultural producers through writing, editing, designing, publishing and disseminating their own texts – sometimes alone and sometimes in a group. The spread of desktop publishing and wider zine networking in the late 1980s saw the zine scene explode: from cooking zines to subversive colouring books, survivor rape diaries to thrift store chic, DIY publications sprung up on any topics imaginable. The digital realm inalienably shaped zine culture, but paper zines still exist in their thousands – the in-your-hand nature of zines is hard to beat.

Getting to the Point. Index Sets and Parallelism-Preserving Autodiff for Pointful Array Programming ADAM PASZKE, Google Research, Poland DANIEL JOHNSON, Google Research, Canada DAVID DUVENAUD, University of Toronto, Canada DIMITRIOS VYTINIOTIS, DeepMind, United Kingdom ALEXEY RADUL, Google Research, USA MATTHEW JOHNSON, Google Research, USA JONATHAN RAGAN-KELLEY, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA DOUGAL MACLAURIN, Google Research, USA We present a novel programming language design that attempts to combine the clarity and safety of high-level functional languages with the efficiency and parallelism of low-level numerical languages. We treat arraysas eagerly-memoized functions on typed index sets, allowing abstract function manipulations, such as currying, to work on arrays. In contrast to composing primitive bulk-array operations, we argue for an explicit nested indexing style that mirrors application of functions to arguments. We also introduce a fine-grained typed effects system which affords concise and automatically-parallelized in-place updates. Specifically, an associative accumulation effect allows reverse-mode automatic differentiation of in-place updates in a way that preserves parallelism. Empirically, we benchmark against the Futhark array programming language, and demonstrate that aggressive inlining and type-driven compilation allows array programs to be written in an expressive, “pointful” style with little performance penalty. CCS Concepts: • Software and its engineering ! Functional languages; Parallel programming lan- guages; • Mathematics of computing ! Automatic differentiation. Additional Key Words and Phrases: array programming, automatic differentiation, parallel acceleration 1 INTRODUCTION Recent years have seen a dramatic rise in the popularity of the array programming model. The model was introduced in APL [Iverson 1962], widely popularized by MATLAB, and eventually made its way into Python.

  • WXYC Brings You Gems from the Treasure of UNC's Southern
IN/AUDIBLE LETTER FROM THE EDITOR a publication of N/AUDIBLE is the irregular newsletter of WXYC – your favorite Chapel Hill radio WXYC 89.3 FM station that broadcasts 24 hours a day, seven days a week out of the Student Union on the UNC campus. The last time this publication came out in 2002, WXYC was CB 5210 Carolina Union Icelebrating its 25th year of existence as the student-run radio station at the University of Chapel Hill, NC 27599 North Carolina at Chapel Hill. This year we celebrate another big event – our tenth anni- USA versary as the first radio station in the world to simulcast our signal over the Internet. As we celebrate this exciting event and reflect on the ingenuity of a few gifted people who took (919) 962-7768 local radio to the next level and beyond Chapel Hill, we can wonder request line: (919) 962-8989 if the future of radio is no longer in the stereo of our living rooms but on the World Wide Web. http://www.wxyc.org As always, new technology brings change that is both exciting [email protected] and scary. Local radio stations and the dedicated DJs and staffs who operate them are an integral part of vibrant local music communities, like the one we are lucky to have here in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Staff NICOLE BOGAS area. With the proliferation of music services like XM satellite radio Editor-in-Chief and Live-365 Internet radio servers, it sometimes seems like the future EDITOR-IN-CHIEF: Nicole Bogas of local radio is doomed.
