It was found- ed in 1799 by a group of Protestant evangelicals who had earlier founded the London Missionary Society and were later to form the British and Foreign Bible Society. The goal of the RTS was to print and distribute religious tracts among people with little leisure time for reading lengthy volumes.It was the group's hope that these tracts would lead people to a knowledge of salvation through Jesus Christ. It was an interdenominational effort. The Society did its work in Britain, the British colonies and on the continent of . By 1848 the RTS was operating either directly or indirectly in China, Singapore, Borneo, Thailand, Burma, India,Sri Lanka, Australia and New THE Zealand, the South Pacific, Africa, Madagascar, the West Indies, the United States, Canada, most CHILD'S COMPANION; European countries, and the countries of the Near OR, and Middle East. [VOL I. 4.11.0 This society was formally created in 1858 as a 4.4,1, ....eV, memorial to the Indian Mutiny by four British missionary societies working in India, including the London Missionary Society and the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society. The Society's goal was to reach the masses in the villages and at the local level through the use of the in the pamphlets it printed and distributed. In 1923 the Society expanded its activities to Africa.
