It may be useful to give a short survey of such materials as have come to my notice, even though this survey is of necessity incomplete. First of all it should be mentioned that literary, cultural and scholarly journals and magazines have discovered modern Indonesian literature and regularly or incidentally publish translations of poetry, short stories, essays etc. The well-known journal INDONESIA, issued half-yearly by the Modern Indonesia Project of Cornell University, has published a number of Indonesian stories in English translation, for example Idrus' stories Fujinkai and Och... Och ... Och (vol. 2) and Surabaja (vol. 5), Ajip Rosidi's stories Among the Family (vol. 1) and A Japanese (vol. 6), while Heather Sutherland (vol. 6) and Harry Aveling (vol. 7) con- tributed essays on modern literature. Another magazine which deserves to be mentioned as an interesting effort to make available to a wider audience modern literary and other cultural products from Southeast Asia including Indonesia is TENGGARA (tenggara means Southeast). So far five issues have come out, .the latest one bearing the year 1969. Another volume, containing Southeast Asian plays, has been announced. Several short stories, poems and essays on Indonesian literature have been published so far. -

Advances in Social Science, Education and Humanities Research, volume 263 International Conference on Language, Literature, and Education (ICLLE 2018) Love, Faith, Religion and Colonialization: Cultural Insight in the Soul of Archipelago Literature Hadijah bte Rahmat Nanyang Technological University, Singapore [email protected] Abstract-This paper discusses the role of literature in the development of culture, country, world and humanity of the people. The great literary work is not only beautiful artfully in terms of language and its shape, it can even give insights into thinking, science, values and soul, which can instill and develop the culture and civilization of a nation or country. In short, literature can function as an agent of cultural reconstruction and transformation. These are all clearly revealed in pantun, proverbs, precept or poems of their peoples. Cultural insights that discussing love, cultural customs, religion and occupation occurred in the works of HAMKA and the impact of the writing will be discussed. Keywords-- culture, Malay, local wisdom, HAMKA I. INTRODUCTION Interest in the matter of culture in Indonesia has emerged, grew and developed more or less a century ago. ASPECTS of INDONESIAN INTELLECTUAL LIFE in the 1930S
PUDJANGGA BARU: ASPECTS OF INDONESIAN INTELLECTUAL LIFE IN THE 1930s Heather Sutherland Pudjangga Baru, the "New Writer," was a cultural periodical put out in the colonial capital of Batavia by a group of young Indonesian intellectuals from 1933 until the invasion of the Netherlands Indies by Japan in 1942.1 In Bahasa Indonesia, the term pudjangga means "literary man, man of letters; author, poet; linguist, philologist."2 34 The choice of this term for the title of the monthly was no doubt also influenced by an awareness of its historical connotations, for the word can be traced back through such Old Javanese forms as bhujanga to an original Sanskrit root associated with sacred and priestly learning. It implied nobility and integrity as well as literary ability; and it is therefore no accident that the writings appearing in it claimed high idealism and a sense of mission. The purpose proclaimed by Pudjangga Baru became more fervent as the years passed. In the beginning, it described itself simply as a literary, artistic, and cultural monthly. At the start of its third year it declared itself a "bearer of a new spirit in literature, art, culture, and general social affairs."^ At the beginning of its fifth year it claimed to be the "leader of the new dynamic spirit to create a new culture, the culture of Indonesian unity."1* In 1928, when the second All-Indonesia Youth Congress swore the famous oath to work for "one fatherland, one people, and one language" Pudjangga Baru pledged itself to work for the development of the national language and also to strive for a national culture, adding "one culture" to its 1. -
