  • Rules and Options
Rules and Options The author has attempted to draw as much as possible from the guidelines provided in the 5th edition Players Handbooks and Dungeon Master's Guide. Statistics for weapons listed in the Dungeon Master's Guide were used to develop the damage scales used in this book. Interestingly, these scales correspond fairly well with the values listed in the d20 Modern books. Game masters should feel free to modify any of the statistics or optional rules in this book as necessary. It is important to remember that Dungeons and Dragons abstracts combat to a degree, and does so more than many other game systems, in the name of playability. For this reason, the subtle differences that exist between many firearms will often drop below what might be called a "horizon of granularity." In D&D, for example, two pistols that real world shooters could spend hours discussing, debating how a few extra ounces of weight or different barrel lengths might affect accuracy, or how different kinds of ammunition (soft-nosed, armor-piercing, etc.) might affect damage, may be, in game terms, almost identical. This is neither good nor bad; it is just the way Dungeons and Dragons handles such things. Who can use firearms? Firearms are assumed to be martial ranged weapons. Characters from worlds where firearms are common and who can use martial ranged weapons will be proficient in them. Anyone else will have to train to gain proficiency— the specifics are left to individual game masters. Optionally, the game master may also allow characters with individual weapon proficiencies to trade one proficiency for an equivalent one at the time of character creation (e.g., monks can trade shortswords for one specific martial melee weapon like a war scythe, rogues can trade hand crossbows for one kind of firearm like a Glock 17 pistol, etc.).

  • Slavery and Social Change in Early Modern Southeast Asia
215 Journal of Southeast Asian Studies, 38(2), pp 215–245 June 2007. Printed in the United Kingdom. E 2007 The National University of Singapore doi:10.1017/S0022463407000021 Fugitive women: Slavery and social change in early modern Southeast Asia Eric A. Jones Female slaves in VOC-controlled Southeast Asia did not fare well under a legal code which erected a firm partition between free and slave status. This codification imposed a rigid dichotomy for what had been fluid, abstract conceptions of social hierarchy, in effect silting up the flow of underclass mobility. At the same time, conventional relationships between master and slave shifted in the context of a changing economic climate. This article closely narrates the lives of several eighteenth-century female slaves who, left with increasingly fewer options in this new order, resorted to running away. One day in the early months of 1793 authorities in the Dutch colonial capital became suspicious when they noticed a man carrying what appeared to be a bloody axe (golok). When they approached him about the axe (which turned out only to have rust on the blade) they discovered that he was in fact a fugitive slave. The runaway, named Augusto van Sumbauwa, was apprehended and revealed to them a complex of safe houses and runaway accomplices. Augusto had been on the run with his girlfriend, Sapia van Sumbauwa, moving from safe house to safe house. These slaves were given Dutch- style ‘last names’ with ‘van’ implying their ethnicity or geographical origin. They had first rented a back room in the home of a ‘free non-Christian woman’ called Ma or Nyai Sauwa, partially in exchange for repairing her roof, and then moved to a large plantation mansion with other runaways.

Don Murdono, S. H., M. Si. BAGIAN KEDUA MASA KERAJAAN HINGGA BERDIRINYA KABUPATEN SUMEDANG 4.

  • The World from Malarrak: Depictions of South-East Asian and European Subjects in Rock Art from the Wellington Range, Australia
The world from Malarrak: Depictions of South-east Asian and European subjects in rock art from the Wellington Range, Australia Sally K May The Australian National University Paul SC Taçon Griffith University Alistair Paterson The University of Western Australia Meg Travers University of New England Abstract: This paper investigates contact histories in northern Australia through an analysis of recent rock paintings. Around Australia Aboriginal artists have produced a unique record of their experiences of contact since the earliest encounters with Southeast Asian and, later, European visitors and settlers. This rock art archive provides irreplaceable contemporary accounts of Aboriginal attitudes towards, and engagement with, foreigners on their shores. Since 2008 our team has been working to document contact period rock art in northwestern and western Arnhem Land. This paper focuses on findings from a site complex known as Malarrak. It includes the most thorough analysis of contact rock art yet undertaken in this area and ques tions previous interpretations of subject matter and the relationship of particular paintings to historic events. Contact period rock art from Malarrak presents us with an illustrated history of international relationships in this isolated part of the world. It not only reflects the material changes brought about by outside cultural groups but also highlights the active role Aboriginal communities took in respond ing to these circumstances. Introduction the rock art that documents this period of change Few changes would have been as dramatic and from an Aboriginal perspective. We argue that confronting as the early encounters between Aboriginal artists have produced a unique record Indigenous groups and strangers arriving in of their experiences of contact since the very earli- their country after having crossed the sea.

  • Traditional Slingshot Weapon
Page 1 Page 2 Nopriyasman and Syafrizal: The History of Traditional Weapons Slingshot in Minangkabau ii ` Page 3 Nopriyasman and Syafrizal: The History of Traditional Weapons Slingshot in Minangkabau FOREWORD Alhamdulillah, praise and thanks to Allah SWT for the successful completion of research and book writing this, which was entitled “History of Traditional Weapons Umban Rope in Minangkabau". Honestly, a lot of obstacles that the authors face in conducting research on the existence of the sling in a past life Minangkabau people in West Sumatra. Difficulty The first is related to the search for written sources about use of the sling in society, very few books a book that alludes to talk of the sling, even if there is, the discussion is only about one paragraph. The source of the writing was obtained from Dutch writers and writers Indonesia, which is generally related to history war, especially traditional war traditions or nagari wars, and priest war. The second difficulty relates to oral sources, it turns out that there are very few people in West Sumatra today who knows about the traditional slingshot weapon. There have been enough people the writer/researcher has met for conducted an interview about the sling, but at the beginning their conversation immediately admitted that they did not know about sling. The informants who were successfully interviewed by the writer were people who can use traditional weapons slingshot, but most of them can't make it. Information about the use of the sling they put forward related to agricultural interests. The sling became a weapon for farmers to repel monkeys, pigs, and humans disturbing the farm site they.

  • Swords and Daggers
Swords and Daggers Swords are weapons formed by a blade (the part intended for striking) and a hilt (from which the sword is held) [Fig. 1]. While there have been swords made of wood and stone, the more predominant and effective examples have been made of some sort of metal. Bronze was used in ancient times, followed by iron and then steel. Daggers are a more primitive, much smaller weapon which share many features with the sword. As a general rule, knives have a single edge. Blade The sword’s blade can be divided between the forte (third of the blade closer to the hilt) and the foible (third of the blade closer to the tip). This refers to how much strength the wielder can put into each area of the blade when used as a lever. The part of the blade that becomes narrow and goes into the grip is called the tang [Fig. 2]. The point of balance [Fig. 3] is the sword’s center of gravity, often found on the blade very close to the hilt, and influences the handling of the weapon. The center of percussion [Fig. 3] is the area of the blade that produces the least amount of vibration when striking a target, and thus is the ideal place with which to strike. The cross-section of the blade [Fig. 4] is the shape it has when cut at the guard. The fullers, incorrectly called blood grooves in modern times, were used to reduce the weight of the blade and give it structural strength.
