Something’s happened to me over the last five years. I listen to, and trust, pop music far less than I did in my twenties, and the pop that I still listen to is radically different than what I grew up with. My ears cock, like a cat’s, more toward jazz, avant-garde, and instrumental hip-hop now than to the rock, rap, R&B, and beat-driven fare that sustained me for twenty years. To be fair, jazz was always there, ever since I bought a $20 CD of Miles Davis’s Capitol/Blue Note years in a cold January morning in 1994. I bought it from Sound Warehouse, a chain that’s long gone, because the cover was cool and Davis—with his close-cropped hair and natty suit—looked cooler than I could ever hope for. It was a sophistication to aspire toward, and to try and impress girls with.

  • Indie Mixtape HQ, Sharing Songs We Like in the Hopes That It Will Enrich Your Lives in Some Small Way
:: View email as a web page :: Like all of you, we’ve been witnesses to a terrible — but hopefully transformational – moment in our nation’s history. It is our belief that music is needed now more than ever — as a balm, as a source of spiritual and emotional renewal, and as a reminder that there is still beauty in this world that is worth preserving and protecting. In that spirit, we will continue to do what we usually do here at Indie Mixtape HQ, sharing songs we like in the hopes that it will enrich your lives in some small way. But music can only do so much, so please: Reach out to those in need in your communities, especially your Black and Brown neighbors who are under siege at the moment. The power of music is that it connects us to one another, so now is the time to follow through on those very human bonds by giving money, food, and other essential supplies to those in need. No matter how our politicians might fail us, we will always have each other. -- Steven Hyden, Uproxx Cultural Critic and author of This Isn't Happening: Radiohead's "Kid A" And The Beginning Of The 21st Century OPENING TRACKS JAPANDROIDS Our favorite leather-jacketed two-dude rock band from Canada never fails to lift our spirits in times of hardship. So we’re happy about their new live album, recording during their excellent tour in support of Near To The Wild Heart Of Life. Oh, and it’s called Massey Fucking Hall, after the storied Toronto venue.
