What's It Like to Be Black and Irish?
“What’s it like to be black and Irish?” “Like a pint of Guinness.” The above quote is taken from an interview with Phil Lynott, the charismatic lead singer of the Celtic rock band Thin Lizzy, on Gay Byrne’s ‘The Late Late Show’. Lynott’s often playful and bold responses to such questions about his identity served to mask his overwhelming feelings of insecurity and ambivalent sense of belonging. As an illegitimate black child brought up in the 1950s in a strict Catholic family in Crumlin, a working-class district of Dublin, Lynott was seen to have a “paradoxical personality” (Bridgeman, qtd. in Thomson 4): his upbringing imbued him “with an acute sense of national and gender identity” (Smyth 39), yet his skin color and illegitimacy made him the target of racial and social abuse in a predominantly white and conservative Ireland. For Lynott, becoming a rockstar offered an opportunity to reinvent himself and be whoever he wanted to be. While he played up to the rock and roll lifestyle in which he was embedded, Lynott is often considered to have been a man trapped inside a caricature (Thomson 301). Geldof (qtd. in Putterford 182) believes that this rocker persona was Lynott’s ultimate downfall and led to his untimely death at just 36 years of age in 1986. For all his swagger and bravado, behind the mask, Lynott was a troubled, young man searching for a place to belong. While many books have been written about the life of Phil Lynott (e.g. Putterford; Lynott; Thomson), few have drawn attention to the notion of identity and the way in which music provided Lynott with an outlet to explore his self. -
Midge Ure (Ultravox)
MUSIC He took us to Vienna, fed the world and now Ultravox frontman Midge Ure is back, writes Sally Browne SPARK t had never really been done before. ‘‘Synthpop’’ and ‘‘ballad’’ were two BURNS words that just didn’t go together. I But in 1981 UK band Ultravox released a single that would become a worldwide hit. It was called Vienna and it combined the grandeur of grand piano and strings with haunting, spare synthesiser beats. The song captured a generation, stayed for a month at No. 2 on the UK charts and was awarded Single of the Year at the Brit Awards for 1981. The video, filmed in its namesake Vienna, also set the trend for music videos to come. It was shot by noted Australian director Russell Mulcahy, who also made classic videos for acts including Duran Duran, Elton John, Culture Club, Bonnie Tyler and Queen. Dramatic and cinematic, the film clip for Vienna was reminiscent of noir film The Third Man, set in spy-filled post-war Austria and starring Orson Welles. The young Scotsman who had penned the lyrics to the unusual song had never been to Vienna until that time. ‘‘It wasn’t until we actually went to the city, I realised that what I’d imagined in my head was kind of real, this decaying Still playing: Ultravox elegance, this beautiful city,’’ Midge Ure frontman Midge Ure has a new says today. album after all these years. The band had taken a big risk to shoot the video there. They took out a loan of 7000 pounds to fund it. -

Something’s happened to me over the last five years. I listen to, and trust, pop music far less than I did in my twenties, and the pop that I still listen to is radically different than what I grew up with. My ears cock, like a cat’s, more toward jazz, avant-garde, and instrumental hip-hop now than to the rock, rap, R&B, and beat-driven fare that sustained me for twenty years. To be fair, jazz was always there, ever since I bought a $20 CD of Miles Davis’s Capitol/Blue Note years in a cold January morning in 1994. I bought it from Sound Warehouse, a chain that’s long gone, because the cover was cool and Davis—with his close-cropped hair and natty suit—looked cooler than I could ever hope for. It was a sophistication to aspire toward, and to try and impress girls with. -

Indie Mixtape HQ, Sharing Songs We Like in the Hopes That It Will Enrich Your Lives in Some Small Way
:: View email as a web page :: Like all of you, we’ve been witnesses to a terrible — but hopefully transformational – moment in our nation’s history. It is our belief that music is needed now more than ever — as a balm, as a source of spiritual and emotional renewal, and as a reminder that there is still beauty in this world that is worth preserving and protecting. In that spirit, we will continue to do what we usually do here at Indie Mixtape HQ, sharing songs we like in the hopes that it will enrich your lives in some small way. But music can only do so much, so please: Reach out to those in need in your communities, especially your Black and Brown neighbors who are under siege at the moment. The power of music is that it connects us to one another, so now is the time to follow through on those very human bonds by giving money, food, and other essential supplies to those in need. No matter how our politicians might fail us, we will always have each other. -- Steven Hyden, Uproxx Cultural Critic and author of This Isn't Happening: Radiohead's "Kid A" And The Beginning Of The 21st Century OPENING TRACKS JAPANDROIDS Our favorite leather-jacketed two-dude rock band from Canada never fails to lift our spirits in times of hardship. So we’re happy about their new live album, recording during their excellent tour in support of Near To The Wild Heart Of Life. Bio // Dan Mangan // Nice, Nice, Very Nice
BIO // DAN MANGAN // NICE, NICE, VERY NICE Album: Nice, Nice, Very Nice Catalogue #: A&C055 Format: LP / DD / CD CD/Digital/LP Release Date: August 10, 2010 Heralded as a favorite among Canada's new breed of independent musicians, Dan Mangan’s travels initially took him everywhere but home. Spending most of the last six years toting guitar and merch-sack, Dan experienced Vancouver as more of a resting place than roost. He toured nearly non-stop in support of his debut album Postcards And Daydreaming, testing his words, honing his craft, and building a dedicated following. Graciously, if un-strategically, Mangan pretty much accepted every gig that came his way. He train’d and plane'd on his own throughout North America, Europe and Australia because he couldn’t afford to bring a band along. When he cobbled together funds to get a second album made, he enlisted Toronto based producer John Critchley and spent weeks at Green Door Studios, bringing in musical collaborators from around the country. By the time that sophomore album, Nice, Nice, Very Nice (named in reference to a Kurt Vonnegut calypso) hit the airwaves across his homeland, Dan had already cut his teeth on the road. Recently signed to Arts & Crafts, the trail-blazing indie label that brought us Broken Social Scene, Feist, and Stars, Dan Mangan is the first on their roster from the Pacific Northwest. Though Vancouverites once envied the thriving music scenes of Montreal and Toronto, Mangan’s rain-soaked hometown has since developed a potent scene of its own – in recent years, its eclectic and supportive musical community has produced the likes of The New Pornographers, Ladyhawk, You Say Party! We Say Die!, Black Mountain, and Japandroids.
