Like all of , we’ve been witnesses to a terrible — but hopefully transformational – moment in our nation’s history. It is our belief that music is needed now more than ever — as a balm, as a source of spiritual and emotional renewal, and as a reminder that there is still beauty in this world that is worth preserving and protecting. In that spirit, we will continue to do what we usually do here at Indie Mixtape HQ, sharing songs we like in the hopes that it will enrich your lives in some small way. But music can only do so much, so please: Reach out to those in need in your communities, especially your Black and Brown neighbors who are under siege at the moment. The power of music is that it connects us to one another, so now is the time to follow through on those very human bonds by giving money, food, and other essential supplies to those in need. No matter how our politicians might fail us, we will always have each other.

THROWBACK

'NINA SIMONE IN CONCERT' by NINA SIMONE This pop-jazz trailblazer isn’t a direct influence on indie rock, though it’s safe bet that nearly all of your indie faves know and cherish this record. Recorded at Carnegie Hall, Nina Simone In Concert finds the master engaging in highly theatrical songs that shed harsh light on the realities of the civil rights struggles — sometimes explicitly, other times more subtly.
