Prime Cattle to 200ppk & £1322 Barren Cows to 132ppk & £1030 A decent new year’s entry saw Prime Cattle reach a high of 200ppk (£1185) for a well-covered Charolais heifer (20m) from Rosie Fishleigh of Sourton Cross whilst similar others drew 190ppk and £1190 again for Rosie. A strong Simmental heifer (25m) from Rob & Janet Legg, Exeter realised £1322 (760kg x174ppk) with British Blue steers close behind at £1311 (690kg x 189ppk) for Roger Adams & family of Cullompton. Basil Cane, Spriddlestone, saw £1266 (690kg x 183ppk) for South Devon steers (24m) whilst Limousin bullocks (27m) levelled out at £1270 (700kg x £178ppk) for Bill Hobbs of Moretonhampstead, also Limousin heifers (25m) sold to £1128 (600kg x 188ppk) for Rob Summers of Sidmouth. Barren Cows saw a top of 132ppk, (£1030) for Michael Ware of Silverton with shapely Limousin with others of the same breed to 123ppk and 120ppk for Rod Chisholm of Way Village. South Devon barreners at 750kg made 124ppk and £926 for Roger Hunt, with best cull bulls to 129ppk (£920) for a muscled Blonde De Aquitaine from Martin Reed of Kings Nympton.

1038 PRIME HOGGS Top Average No’s £’s Per £’s Per Weight P.P.K P.P.K A decent entry of 1038 prime hoggs peaked at £97.20 for a cracking pen Fwd Head Head of overweights (61kgs) from Roger Morrish of Torrington who had others PRIME LAMBS weighing from 54-57kgs that sold at £95.80, £95.50 & £94. With 46-52 382 sixteen pens over 200ppk, the heaviest of which were smart 46kg hoggs (+3.30) (+10) (+3.14) (+6) 97.20 179 93.41 168 from Dan Caunter of Sherford that realised £92.50 (201ppk) closely 53+ 146 followed by 45kg hoggs from Derek Arnold of Morchard Road at £94.50 (-5.30) (+8) (-5.30) (+3) (210ppk) and 44kgs from Edward Wilton of Blackawton were £91 (207ppk) and more of the same at £89.50 (203ppk) for Colin Pople of Bridgewater. 41kgs to £83.20 (203ppk) for Reddaway Ltd of Honeychurch, more 41kgs at £82.50 (201ppk) for Rob & Wendy Woodley of and 40kg Beltex crosses from MJ & CE Greenslade of Blackborough topped the pence per kilo when they made £84.80. Well finished lighter hoggs were a strong trade too with best of the 39kg hoggs achieving £82 (210ppk) for Ken Luscombe of , £80.20 & £78.80 (206 & 202ppk) for J Chisholm of , £79.50 (204ppk) for FR Gillard & Partner of Cheriton Bishop and £78.20 (201ppk) for Lee Whitrow of Honiton. 38kgs again from Dan Caunter realised £80.20 (211ppk) with others of that weight at £78.50 (207ppk) for H & N Saunders of Chawleigh and £76 (200ppk) for Simon & Rose Partridge of Poundsgate. Lighter still at 33kgs were continental bred hoggs from Lee Whitrow that realised £67.50 (205ppk) and lighter hill bred hoggs sold to £58.50 and 186ppk for Abel Bros of Tavistock. A decent SQQ to start the new year at 195ppk which incidentally is 19 pence in front of the same sale last year.

50 GOATS

An entry of 50 lightweight goats from Polly Goodman of Dulverton saw 27kg dairy bred sorts sell to £40.

No’s 751 CULL EWES & 34 CULL RAMS Top Average Fwd Almost 800 killing ewes and rams were topped by the Quick family of 103.50 58.15 EWES 751 Crediton with a single ram at £105 and single ewe at £103.50 whilst further (+8.50) (+15.80) 105.00 57.40 Suffolk cross ewes from the same home sold at £97.50 closely followed by RAMS 34 Michael Down of Payhembury with similar sorts at £96.50. Texel type ewes (+10.50) (-10.86) to £90.50 for CJ & PJ Greenslade of Cullompton, pure Suffolks at £89.50 for James Heard of and no less than six pens sold between £88.50 & £89. In general there was a bit more bite to the trade on heavier, better fleshed ewes whilst mediums were similar as a heavy pen of Scotch Mules sold to £70.50 for Ben Roberts of Bradninch with penful’s of better mules from £64 to £69.50. A proportionate number of hill ewes carried on in a similar vein to the pre-Christmas trade with plainer sorts £5 to £29 and better ewes £30 to £50. A large number of rams away from the top price previously mentioned sold to £99.50 for JR & A Down of Whiddon Down and £94 for Marles Farm Services of Farringdon with a pen of seven Scotch tups from Ken & John Heard of Okehampton achieving £58.50. Overall average £58.15.
