Preistoria Alpina, 42 (2007): 109-118 ISSN 09-0157 © Museo Tridentino di Scienze Naturali, Trento 2007 Transalpine pass routes in the Swiss Central Alps and the strategic use of topographic resources Philippe DELLA CASA Department of Pre-/Protohistory, University of Zurich, Karl-Schmid-Str. ���������������������������4, 8006 Zurich, Switzerland E-mail: [email protected] SUMMARY - Transalpine pass routes in the Swiss Central Alps and the strategic use of topographic resources - Using examples from the San Bernardino and the St. Gotthard passes in the Swiss Central Alps, this paper discusses how the existence of transalpine high altitude pass routes can be inferred, even though there is a lack physical evidence, from specific Bronze and Iron Age settlement patterns in access valleys. Particular attention is given to the effect of topography within the territorial and economic organizational area on transalpine tracks and traffic routes. A set of recurring patterns, such as strategic position, natural and/or artificial protection, presence of “foreign” materials, can help identifying (settlement) sites with particular functions as regards traffic and trade within the systems of territorial organization. Moreover, the paper also addresses socio-dynamic issues of the problem of transalpine pass routes. Welcome to Alpenwelt Karwendel! These two mountain bikers have had a good laugh. They are returning from a break at Vereiner Alm. In the deep south of Germany, at the border with Austria, a pleasant valley with undula- ting meadows, lakes and streams extends between rocky peaks, forested mountain flanks and hills. Alpenwelt Karwendel with the three Upper Bavarian municipalities of Mittenwald, Krün and Wallgau is surrounded by four mountain massifs: the Karwendel mountains and the Soiern group to the East, the Ester mountains to the North and the Wetterstein mountains to the South-West. Because of this, the region is the ideal starting point for all kinds of mountain bike and cycling tours. If you like to take it easy, you can linger in the valley between the flower meadows, lakes and the expansive river landscape of the Isar with its shingle and gravel banks. If you prefer the forested foothills, explore the Ester mountains and the Soiern group with their shady forest roads and single trails. -

ONOMÀSTICA BIBLIOTECA TÈCNICA DE POLÍTICA LINGÜÍSTICA European Train Names: a Historic Outline* Christian Weyers DOI: 10.2436/15.8040.01.201 Abstract This paper gives a first overview of the onomastic category of train names, searches to classify the corpus and reviews different stages of their productivity. Apart from geographical names (toponyms, choronyms, compass directions) generally indicating points of origin and destination of the trains in question, a considerable number of personal names have entered this category, of classical literary authors, musicians and scientists, but also of many fictional or non-fictional characters taken from literature or legendary traditions. In some cases also certain symbolic attributes of these persons and finally even heraldic figures have given their names to trains. In terms of their functionality, train names originally were an indicator of exclusiveness and high grade of travel quality, but they developed gradually, as they dispersed over the European continent, into a rather unspecific, generalized appellation, also for regional and local trains. After two periods of prosperity after 1950, the privatisation of railway companies starting in the 1990s had again a very positive effect on the category, as the number of named trains initially reached a new record in this decade. ***** The first train names appeared in England in the 1860s in addition to names for steam locomotives, and on two different levels. The Special Scotch Express between London King’s Cross and Edinburgh (inaugurated in 1862) was called by the public The Flying Scotsman from the 1870s, but it succeeded as the official name not before 1924. Also the names of the German diesel trainsets Der Fliegende Hamburger and Der Fliegende Kölner were colloquial name creations, as were the Train Bleu and the Settebello operated from 1922 and 1953 but officially named in 1947 and 1958, respectively. -
Overview of the CASO
INTRODUCTION This brochure contains a general outline of operating data for the Canada Division, including the Amherstburg, Leamington, St.Clair and Niagara Subdivisions. Total mileage 363.12. This portion of the New York Central System extends from Windsor, Ontario, on the west to Fort Eric, Ontario, and Niagara Fall Ontario, on the east, with branch lines running from Essex to Amherstburg, Comber to Leamington, St.Thomas to Courtright, Eddys to Petrolia and Chippawa to Niagara-on-the-Lake. From Windsor to Fort Erie and Welland to Niagara Falls, the main line consists of 241.6 miles of double track, our branch lines are all single track with a total mileage of 121.52. Automatic Block System governs from Windsor to Fort Erie and Welland to Niagara Falls and is equipped with General Railway Signal Company intermittent inductive train stop. The entire double track is stone ballasted with treated tics and 127 pound rail, with exception of 2.5 miles on the westbound track between Montrose and Welland, mileage N.F. 10.3 to N.F. 12.8, which is 105 pound rail, the maximum speed being 80 M.P.H. St.Thomas, Ontario, is Division Headquarters, at which point are located the offices of the Division Superintendent, Division Engineer, Master Mechanic and Division Trainmaster, as well as all train dispatching forces, comprising one Chief Dispatcher, two Night Chief Dispatchers, one Relief Chief Dispatcher, together with eleven regular and extra Dispatchers covering two dispatching districts. Division Superintendent and Division Trainmaster are located at St.Thomas. Trainmasters are located at Fort Erie and Windsor; one Road Foreman and one Assistant Road Foreman are located at St.Thomas. -

Die besten Fünf Exkursions- und Ausflugsziele aus den Regionen der ARGE ALP Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Alpenländer www.argealp.org VORWORT Die Arbeitsgemeinschaft Alpenländer (ARGE ALP) umfasst die Regionen, Kantone und Länder Bayern, Graubünden, Lombardei, Salzburg, St. Gallen, Südtirol, Tessin, Tirol, Trentino und Vorarlberg. Als erste grenzüberschreitende Vereini- gung von Regionen ebnete sie den Weg für ein neues Selbstbewusstsein der Regionen in Europa. Seit ihrer Gründung 1972 setzen sich die Mitglieder für eine nachhaltige Entwicklung ihrer alpinen Heimat ein. Der Vorsitz wechselt jährlich. Die vorliegende Veröffentlichung präsentiert für jeden Partner in der ARGE ALP (ausgenommen die Lombardei) fünf herausragende Ausflugs- bzw. Exkursionsziele für Schulklassen, Jugendgruppen usw. Sie ist eine Handreichung für LehrerInnen, JugendgruppenleiterInnen usw. Ziel dieses Projektes ist es, das Bewusstsein für unseren gemeinsamen Lebensraum Alpen bereits in jungen Jahren zu entwickeln. Gleichzeitig soll die grenzüberschreitende pädagogische Zusammenarbeit und der Kontakt auf Arbeitsebene zwischen den zuständigen Institutionen gefördert werden. Die Regierungschefkonferenz der ARGE ALP hat das Projekt im Juni 2008 unter bayerischem Vorsitz beschlossen. Um Wiederholungen zu vermeiden und auf überall Gültiges hinzuweisen, wird den regionalen Vorschlägen ein allge- meiner Teil vorangestellt. Dort werden allgemeine Grundverhaltensregeln für die Alpen, eine sinnvolle Ausrüstung für Bergwanderungen beschrieben sowie anhand einer international gültigen Skala der Schwierigkeitsgrad der einzelnen Wanderstrecken definiert. Die Beiträge selbst spiegeln inhaltlich und teilweise auch sprachlich die Vielfalt des Lebensraumes Alpen wieder. Sie gliedern sich in der Regel in eine Kurzbeschreibung, infrastrukturelle Informationen („technische Details“) und eine fach- liche und didaktische Aufbereitung des Angebots. Generell kann aber kein Beitrag die individuelle Vorbereitung eines Ausflugs bzw. einer Exkursion ersetzen. Er soll vielmehr ein Vorschlag sein und Anregungen geben. -

Nestled in the breathtaking scenery of the Rofan and Karwendel Mountains is Tirol’s largest lake – Lake Achensee. The region around this natural gem is renowned for its unrivalled scenic beauty, while its wide range of sporting and leisure activities make it an enticing destination for visitors. Since the Achensee region was first opened up to tourists, it has become one of the most popular destinations for holidays and excursions in Tirol. In 1887 the first steam ship, the St. Josef, cast off onto the lake and the resultant Achensee Shipping Company remains a tourist magnet to this day. The same is also true of the historical Achensee railway. Every summer, year after year, this steam-powered cog railway puffs its way from Jenbach station towards Achensee, covering an incredible 400 metres in altitude over 6.7 km, with a maximum gradient of around 16 %. The towns and villages dotted around Lake Achensee have also long been popular for winter tourism. Gently undulating hills are particularly suitable for family skiing, while an extensive network of cross-country trails has helped to build the region’s reputation as the best cross-country skiing area in Tirol. The Achensee region also became famous for its “black gold” – Tiroler Steinöl®. This fossil oil has been mined in the region for over a century and has been used in the treatment of a wide variety of ailments. Schlafwagen WLABsm 166, Epoche IVb Die Beschaffung neuer Schlafwagen wurde Mitte der siebziger Jahre über den internationalen Schlaf - wagenpool (TEN) abgewickelt. Die Schweizer Waggonfabrik Schlieren entwickelte und lieferte 1975 46 150 WLABsm 166 den Einheitstyp T2S, von dem 63 Wagen gebaut wurden. Hiervon erhielt die DB 15 Wagen, die sie als T2S Schlafwagen TEN rot mit silbernem Dach Bauart WLABsm 166 einreihte. Die ersten Wagen hatten bei Ablieferung noch eine purpurrote Lackie - 46 152 WLABsm 166 rung und ein silbernes Dach. Später erhielten sie den international verbindlichen blauen Anstrich für T2S Schlafwagen TEN blau mit blauem Dach Schlafwagen, den sie bis nach der Jahrtausendwende behielten. 24 25 EPOCHE III Fahrzeuge der Epoche III werden in Deutschland von der Fa. Lemke in Eigenregie und unter der Marke F 44 „Roland“, Epoche IIIb „Hobbytrain“ in Auftrag gegeben und vertrieben. Zur Lieferung vorgesehen sind für die Jahre H43018 F-Zug Roland Set 1 mit 2 Wagen 2012/2013 die hier aufgelisteten Fahrzeuge (Siehe auch Katalog der Firma Lemke, Haan) Der F44 „Roland“ ist ein typischer F-Zug der späten Epoche IIIb. Unser Vorbild war in der angebotenen 1. Klasse-Wagen A4ümg-54 Zusammenstellung ab Sommerfahrplan 1965 im Einsatz. Zuglaufschilder und Zusammenstellung des 1. Klasse-Wagen A4ümg-54 Modellzuges sind wie immer vorbildgerecht. Die DB hatte in den frühen sechziger Jahren die Anordnung der Anschriften überarbeitet. Das Modell H43017 F-Zug Roland, Set 2 mit 2 Wagen 16 018 E410 001 AEG, BW Köln-Deutzerfeld des F44 „Roland“ orientiert sich auch in diesem Punkt exakt am Vorbild. Der Speisewagen unterschei - 1.
