INTRODUCTION

This brochure contains a general outline of operating data for the Canada Division, including the , Leamington, St.Clair and Niagara Subdivisions. Total mileage 363.12. This portion of the New York Central System extends from Windsor, , on the west to Fort Eric, Ontario, and Niagara Fall Ontario, on the east, with branch lines running from Essex to Amherstburg, Comber to Leamington, St.Thomas to Courtright, Eddys to Petrolia and Chippawa to Niagara-on-the-Lake. From Windsor to Fort Erie and Welland to Niagara Falls, the main line consists of 241.6 miles of double track, our branch lines are all single track with a total mileage of 121.52. Automatic Block System governs from Windsor to Fort Erie and Welland to Niagara Falls and is equipped with General Railway Signal Company intermittent inductive train stop. The entire double track is stone ballasted with treated tics and 127 pound rail, with exception of 2.5 miles on the westbound track between Montrose and Welland, mileage N.F. 10.3 to N.F. 12.8, which is 105 pound rail, the maximum speed being 80 M.P.H. St.Thomas, Ontario, is Division Headquarters, at which point are located the offices of the Division Superintendent, Division Engineer, Master Mechanic and Division Trainmaster, as well as all train dispatching forces, comprising one Chief Dispatcher, two Night Chief Dispatchers, one Relief Chief Dispatcher, together with eleven regular and extra Dispatchers covering two dispatching districts. Division Superintendent and Division Trainmaster are located at St.Thomas. Trainmasters are located at Fort Erie and Windsor; one Road Foreman and one Assistant Road Foreman are located at St.Thomas. OPERATION MAIN TRACK Automatic block signals of the color light and searchlight type and General Railway Signal Company intermittent inductive train stop is in use between Windsor and Fort Erie and Welland and Niagara Falls with current of traffic. C&O Railway operate over NYC tracks between and Pelton, between St.Thomas and Fort Erie and between Welland and Suspension Bridge (Tower 65), For this privilege they pay a rental and a wheelage proportion of operating and maintenance expense. They operate no passenger service in Canada and are not permitted to perform local service at any point on the joint tracks.

BRANCHES All trains receive terminal clearance at the initial station with the exception of the Niagara Subdivision which is entirely within Montrose Yard limits and trains operate under the jurisdiction of the Yardmaster. HOME 2. TERMINALS and SENIORITY Engine crews hold seniority over entire Division in both road and yard service, St.Thomas is the homo terminal for all train crews in freight service with the exception of certain assigned locals, Detroit, , is the home terminal for all train crews in main line passenger service. Buffalo, N.Y., is the home terminal for all train crews in joint Michigan Central - Toronto, Hamilton and Buffalo passenger service operating between Buffalo, N.Y., and Hamilton, Ontario, Yardmen at Montrose, Victoria and Welland have separate seniority rosters for each point for all employees hired previous to December 5, 1940, and joint seniority roster for all employees hired subsequent to that date. Yardmen at Windsor and St.Thomas have separate seniority rosters. Transfer runs operating between Victoria, Welland and Montrose are manned by trainmen from St,Thomas trainmen's seniority roster.

SERVICE - PASSENGER Six passenger trains are operated eastward Monday through Friday and five on Saturday and Sunday. All trains except one operate Detroit to Buffalo via Fort Erie, the one train operates Detroit to Buffalo via Suspension Bridge and the Falls Road Suspension Bridge to Buffalo. Five passenger trains are operated westward from Buffalo to Detroit Monday through Saturday and four on Sunday. In addition, one mail and express train operates westward from Buffalo to Detroit daily except Monday and days following United States holidays. All trains are required to pass Immigration and Customs inspection at Windsor, Fort Erie and Niagara Falls, Ontario, SERVICE - FREIGHT Four manifest freight trains are normally operated eastwardly daily from Windsor to Suspension Bridge carrying East of DeWitt, West of DeWitt, Newberry Junction and Lehigh Valley Railroad connection cars. In addition, providing sufficient cars are available, one or two manifest freight trains operate eastwardly daily from Windsor to Victoria carrying DL&W, PRR, Erie and NYC connection cars. When cars via the Fort Erie Gateway are not of sufficient numbers to warrant operating a train, these cars are carried on the head end of two of the manifest eastbounds and set off at Welland, Ontario, for movement via Transfer Service from Welland to Victoria. Four manifest freight trains are normally operated westwardly daily from Suspension Bridge to Windsor. In addition, providing sufficient cars are available, one or two manifest freight trains operate westwardly daily from Victoria to Windsor. When sufficient cars are not available moving westward from Victoria to warrant operating a train, these cars are moved from Victoria to Welland in Transfer Service and picked up by through westbound trains from Suspension Bridge. All trains carrying manifest freight are required to pass Customs inspection at Windsor, Victoria and/or Montrose and Niagara Falls, Ontario. Montrose-Hamilton local operates between Montrose, Ontario, and Welland, Ontario, on NYC tracks and from Coyle Yard, Welland, to Hamilton, Ontario, on Toronto, Hamilton and Buffalo Railway tracks. TH&B crews operate this train approximately nine months of the year and NYC crews the remaining three months in order to work out NYC crews mileage equity between Montrose and Welland. This train operates on a 3. turnaround basis with Montrose as headquarters, picking up and dropping cars on the westward and eastward portion of their runs respectively, at Coyle Yard, Welland, which cars are handled to and from Welland on the Victoria - Welland Transfer. Assigned local freight trains operate daily except Sunday from St.Thomas to Montrose and Victoria and from St.Thomas to Windsor in both directions servicing all intermediate stations enroute.

In addition we operate an assigned local daily except Sunday in turnaround service from St.Thomas to Hagersville. St.Clair Subdivision extra operates out of St.Thomas daily Monday, Wednesday and Friday ho Courtright, Ontario, laying over at Courtright and departing from that point Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, servicing all intermediate stations and operates between Eddys and Petrolia when service requires. Amherstburg local operates daily except Sunday from Windsor to Essex and Essex to Amherstburg and return to Windsor, servicing all intermediate stations. In addition, this local when service requires can operate as far east as Tilbury under existing schedule agreement. Leamington local operates daily except Sunday from Leamington to Comber and return to Leamington, servicing all intermediate stations. In addition, this local when service requires can operate as far east as Fargo under existing schedule agreement. POWER 10 - GP-7 1 - H-7 6 - G-6 1 - U-2 1 - F-82 The Canada Division is situated in one of the finest agricultural sections of North America. The area adjacent to the railroad is noted for abundant crops of all grains, tobacco and fruits. FORT ERIE Population 8700. Station forces consist of Agent and F.E. 0.0 five employees, including passenger station force of three Operator-Clerks, one Customs Attendant and one Clerk-Baggageman. Principal industries are Horton Steel Co. and Pratt and Lambart Paint Co. New passenger station facility 1950. Large Canadian Immigration and Customs force provided accommodations in station build• ing. Just east of the station is the International Bridge used on toll basis under contract with the International Bridge Company, which is owned by the Canadian National Railways. NYC has trackage rights from Fort Erie to Black Rock, N.Y., over this bridge on which we operate to NYC Buffalo Division, turning to the right just beyond Black lock Station and entering NYC tracks at Tower F for passenger trains* freight transfer runs turn to the left at Black Rock Station through CNR yards and cross the NYC main line at Tower H to enter NYC Military Yard. Eastern terminal of the CNR, St.Thomas Division, is immediately south of NYC tracks. VICTORIA YARD This is a flat switching yard comprising 21 tracks* F.E. 1.2 Eastbound Yard, 10 tracks, capacity 548 cars. Westbound Yard, 11 tracks, capacity 56l cars. Repair Tracks hold 27 cars. There is a 10-stall engine- house, with a turntable 100 feet long. Victoria is the eastern terminal for all eastbound freight trains carrying cars for the Black Rock Gateway. Deliveries are made by yard power from Victoria to the DL&W, Erie, NYC Buffalo Division and PRR local cars at Black Rock, New York. Westbound cars are handled from the above connections at Black Rock to Victoria for switching and grouping for westbound trains, with the exception of cars from the PRR. The PRR operates in and but of Victoria Yard with their own power and crews from East Buffalo, for which we pay at the rate of 95 per car. We also operate a day and night transfer run from Victoria to Welland and return, handling, in addition to NYC routed cars, cars to and from the TH&B at Coyle Yard, Welland. Yard forces consist of General Yardmaster, two Yardmasters, Chief Yard Clerk, six Yard and Customs Clerks and four miscellaneous employees. Locomotive Department forces consist of one Foreman and 14 miscellaneous employees. Car Department forces consist of two Foremen, one Clerk and 24 miscellaneous employees. Average of five Yard Engines worked daily. Canadian and United States Customs Inspectors are housed at Victoria Yard Office for the convenience of the NYC, thus eliminating considerable payroll overtime and delay to freight trains. STEVENSVILLE F.E. 7.2 Non-agency, handled by Fort Erie. NIAGARA FALLS Population 35000. Industrial centre. Station forces N.F. 0.4 consist of Agent, Chief Clerk, Operator-Clerk, four Clerks, one Warehouseman and one Janitor. Principal industries served by Montrose yard engines are; Canadian Carborundum Co., North American Cyanamid Co., Kimberly Clark Co., American Can Co., Nabisco Co., Dominion Chain Co., Dominion Brake Shoe Co., Gerber- Ogilvie Co., Niagara Wire Weaving Co., National Grocers, Provincial Engineering Co., Queenston Quarries Ltd., and Strategic-Udy Metallurgical Co. The north end of the Niagara Subdivision starts at Niagara Falls, Ontario, running to Niagara-on-the-Lake. The Canadian and United States Customs Departments have Customs inspection buildings at the west and east ends of the Niagara River Bridge, respectively, which arc open twenty-four hours daily for inspection purposes. VICTORIA PARK Manned by Chief Clerk only, five days per week. This N.F. 1.6 employee works from this station for the convenience of several small industries located in the immediate vicinity. MONTROSE JCT. South end of the Niagara Subdivision starts at this N.F. 3.0 point, running to Chippawa, Ontario, MONTROSE Montrose Yard consists of 33 tracks. N.F, 4.1 Eastbound Yard 21 tracks, capacity 675 cars. Westbound Yard 12 tracks, capacity 712 cars. Repair tracks hold 40 cars. There is an 8-stall enginehouse with a turntable 85 feet long. In addition, the Pan-American Yard is immediately to the south and parallels the eastbound yard, 6 tracks, with capacity of 182 cars, leased to the C&O Railway who make direct delivery with yard transfer service on cars set off by through trains, to the Lehigh Valley Railroad and NYC at Suspension Bridge* Montrose yard power services the Niagara Falls industrial area as well as all points on the Niagara Subdivision and operates in transfer service to and from the NYC and LV at Suspension Bridge, N.Y. Montrose-Hamilton freight service operates from Montrose on a turnaround basis and is manned by a TH&B crew nine months of the year, the balance by NYC crews, this in order for NYC crews to protect their equity on miles run from Montrose to Welland. Yard forces consist of General Yardmaster, two Yardmasters, Chief Yard Clerk, five Yard Clerks and six miscellaneous employees. Locomotive Department forces consist of 14 miscellan• eous employees. Car Department forces consist of one Foreman, one Clerk, 12 Carmen and two miscellaneous employees. Canadian Customs Inspectors are housed at Montrose Yard Office for inspection purposes. Average of six engines worked. 6.* W.X. Interlocking, open 24 hours daily. Cross CNR Welland N.F. 13.7 Subdivision, with connection. Maintained and operated by NYC; expense divided - CNR 20.83%, NYC balance, loss wheelage proportion charged to C&O Railway. WELLAND Population 35,000. Industrial centre. Station forces N.F. 14.2 consist of Agent and nine employees, including passenger station force of three Operator-Clerks. Principal industries are Page-Hersey Co., Electro-Metallurgical Company of Canada, John Deere Co., Welland Tube Co., Plymouth Cordage Co., Atlas Steel Co., General Tire & Rubber Co., Canada Packers Ltd., Reliance Electric & Engineering Co., Canadian Foundry & Forgings Co., Dominion Oxygen Co., and the National Carbon Co. of Canada. Yard forces consist of one trick Yardmaster, one Chief Yard Clerk and three Yard Clerks. Car Department forces consist of two Car Inspectors, the day Car Inspector, in addition to servicing cars at Welland, also makes repairs to cars set out on line west to Edwards. Three yard engines work here and power is GP-7 owned by the TH&B used under rental and mileage agreement. Westward siding capacity 125 cars. Eastward siding capacity 125 cars. WELLAND Drawbridge over Welland Canal, water route from Lake DRAWBRIDGE Erie to Lake Ontario. Drawbridge operators also N.F. 14.5 handle interlocking to TH&B Coyle Yard immediately west of Drawbridge. During the year 1955, there were 8044 boats that passed through this canal, and bridge was swung 5354 times. Maintained and operated by NYC; expense divided TH&B 37.85%; Niagara, St.Catharines & Toronto Railway 24.77%; NYC balance, less wheelage proportion charged to C&O Railway. The TH&B maintain a yard known as Coyle Yard immediately west and north of the Drawbridge. Coylo Yard consists of seven through tracks with capacity of 55 cars each and five stub tracks of 35 car capacity each. They operate a switch engine 24 hours daily. Niagara, St.Catharines and Toronto Railway cross our right-of-way just west of TH&B junction, controlled by Welland Drawbridge Operator. Westward siding 125 car capacity. Eastward siding 125 car capacity. PERRY Westward siding, 125 car capacity; stub track on south N.F. 23.5 side holds 20 cars. E. & 0. Cross TH&B Dunnville Subdivision, with no connection. N.F. 30.5 Interlocking open 11.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. daily except Saturday, Sunday and holidays. Maintained and operated by NYC with TH&B billed 100% of expense. 7. CANFIELD JCT. Interlocking, open 24 hours daily. Cross CNR Dunnville N.F. 39.1 Subdivision, with connection. Maintained and operated by NYC - expense divided CNR 25%, NYC balance, less wheelage proportion charged to C&O Railway. Westward siding 119 car capacity, Eastward siding 119 car capacity. Track south of Canfield Jct. paralleling NYC tracks is the CNR over which the Wabash Railroad operates through service Windsor to Niagara Falls and Fort Erie. EDWARD N.F. 43.9 Stub track, north side, capacity 25 cars. HAGERSVILLE Population 17%0. Interlocking open 24 hours daily. N.F. 55.9 Cross CNR Hagersville Subdivision, with connection. Maintained and operated by NYC - expense divided CNR 26.47% balance NYC, less wheelage proportion charged to C&O Railway. Manned by Agent and Clerk, six and five days per week, respectively. Three largest industrial stone quarries in Canada located here, furnishing stone for road construction work and railroad ballast. Served by road crew in turnaround service from St.Thomas. All stone weighed at Hagersville on track scales, located on NYC track at Hagersville Quarries Ltd. Westward siding, "Old North" capacity 84 cars. Westward siding, "New North" capacity 115 cars. County seat of Elgin County. N.F. 115.1 Division offices located here. Station forces consist of Agent and 13 miscellaneous employees, including passenger station force of Ticket Agent, Ticket Clerk, Crew Dispatcher, two Crew Dispatcher-Baggagemen, Baggageman and Janitor. Woodstock-St.Thomas Subdivision of the CPR connects with NYC at City's eastern limits and CPR trains operate into NYC passenger station and yard. NYC ticket and freight offices handle CPR business under joint arrangement. CPR engines are serviced at NYC enginehouse. C&O Railway division point for Canada. Average of 3.5 westboundand 5.5 eastbound C&O trains operate over NYC daily between St.Thomas and Niagara Falls and/or Fort Erie. For this privilege, they pay a rental and a wheelage proportion of operating and maintenance expense. They operate no passenger service in Canada. London & Port Stanley Railway (electric line) owned and operated by the City of London, passenger trains connect with NYC passenger trains at NYC passenger station. NYC freight business between St.Thomas and London is handled by L&PS Railway under contract. 9. St,Thomas Yard is a flat switching yard, comprising six through tracks, one running track, scale track, caboose track and 12 stub classification tracks, with total capacity of 1303 cars. Two repair tracks hold 30 cars, two house tracks hold 11 cars and one team track accommodates 12 cars. St,Thomas is home terminal for freight crews operating between St.Thomas and Windsor and St.Thomas to Suspension Bridge and/or Victoria. Also home terminal for passenger engine crews operating between St.Thomas and Detroit and St.Thomas and Buffalo (Central Terminal)* Enginehouse has 24. stalls; 8 occupied by the Maintenance of Way Department exclusively; 8 occupied by the Maintenance of Way and Electrical Departments jointly; 7 active stalls and one retired in place* There is an 85 foot turntable and diesel fuel oil storage of 20,000 gallons. There is also a general machine shop and Division Storehouse. Yard forces consist of General Yardmaster, Night General Yardmaster, trick Yardmaster, Chief Yard Clerk and two Yard Clerks. Locomotive Department forces consist of four Foremen, three Engine Dispatchers and Engine Crew Callers, and 33 miscellaneous employees* Car Department forces consist of Foreman and 45 miscellaneous employees* Shop forces consist of Chief Engineer, Assistant Chief Engineer and 28 miscellaneous employees* Storekeeper forces consist of Division Storekeeper, Chief Clerk and 29 miscellaneous employees. Property Protection Department headquarters are located at St.Thomas, which includes Captain, Lieutenant, two Sergeants and 10 Patrolmen, stationed as follows: Captain, Lieutenant and one Patrolman at St.Thomas; one Sergeant and two Patrolmen at Windsor; one Sergeant and two Patrolmen at Fort Erie; three Patrolmen at Montrose; one Patrolman at Niagara Falls; and one Patrolman at Welland. LONDON Population 100,000. Situated 18 miles north of St.Thomas and served by the NYC. Freight traffic is handled under contract by the L&PS Railway on a per car charge basis. Station forces consist of Agent, Ticket Agent and Clerk- Warehouseman, Principal industries include General Steelwares Ltd., Labatt's Brewery, Kellogg's of Canada, General Motors Diesel, Kelvinator Co. of Canada. Located on NYC owned tracks at London are: Imperial Fuels (coal), Sterling Fuels (oil), Sansone Fruit Co., Facey Coal Co., and Ellis-Howard (electrical appliances).

BX Interlocking, open 24 hours daily. Cross London and N.F. 115.2 Port Stanley Railway, with connection. C&0 enter west end of St.Thomas yard at this point, interlocking. Maintained and operated by NYC; expense divided - L&PS 22.86%, C&O wheelage proportion of 10.71% of total, less arbitrary of $63.56 per month, balance NYC. ST.CLAIR JCT. N.F. 119.3 St.Clair Subdivision starts here. SHEDDEN Farming centre, manned by Agent five days per week. IONA N.F. 128.1 Westward siding capacity 119 cars. DUTTON Farming centre, of 970 population.
