Desert Deanery Report to the 2019 Diocesan Assembly The Diocese of the West The Right Reverend DANIEL, Bishop of Santa Rosa Very Reverend John Dresko, Dean The Desert Deanery of the Diocese of the West, the youngest of the Diocese’s deaneries, was established by His Eminence, Archbishop BENJAMIN in July 2012. It is comprised of the parishes in the city and county of San Diego, California, and in the states of Nevada and Arizona. The parish communities included in the Desert Deanery are: Saint Paul the Apostle, Las Vegas, NV; Saints Peter and Paul, Phoenix, AZ; Saint John of Damascus, Poway, CA; and Saint Nicholas, San Diego, CA. His Eminence Archbishop BENJAMIN appointed Archpriest John Dresko as Dean of the Desert Deanery in late August of this year. Highlights of parish life in the Desert Deanery include: Saint John of Damascus, Poway, CA, under the leadership of Archpriest Alexander Federoff, parish rector. A major event affecting the parish was the horrific shooting that took place at the next-door Chabad Temple on the morning of Holy Saturday, April 27, 2019. As result of this tragedy, parishioners have been forced to face the range of emotions that one would assume to be associated with such an event and to restore a sense of peace, calm, and security in their own place of worship. In response, the parish organized a Security Committee to develop procedures and policies related the an active shooter. The parish leadership has turned to the many resources available on the internet, including information and guidance provided by local police, the FBI, and Homeland Security. Parish leadership has also taken advantage of presentations offered by various local resources. Much of the year has also been spent on research and study on a solar electricity system for the church. The parish was in discussion with seven companies recommended by parishioners and received fifteen bids. After discussion, debate and the review and aceceptance of bids, installation was completed at the end of July. Saint Nicholas Church, San Diego, CA, continues its community life under the faithful pastoral leadership of Archpriest Alexander Shkalov. The regular cycle of services and attention to the spiritual growth of the parishioners carries on in the face of the difficulties presented by location and parking needs. Despite these challenges, the parish continues to serve the spiritual needs of its members and visitors. The various administrative aspects (and challenges) of parish life continue to be addressed in practical ways. Ongoing administrative life and special projects are accomplished with the support and assistance of the Parish Council and Parish Improvements Board. The coming year will mark the 80th Anniversary of the founding of the parish and the 40th anniversary of Father Alexander’s ordination to the Holy Priesthood. Saint Paul the Apostle Church, Las Vegas, NV, under the guidance of Archpriest John Dresko, parish rector, continues to guide the parish community as it serves parishioners and expands its mission and service in the city of Las Vegas and the Las Vegas metropolitan area. Highlights of the past year included the parish celebration of Oktoberfest in October and the celebration of Fr. John's 40th Anniversary of ordination in June. The parish also sponsored an annual International Dinner (with 14 cultures and cuisines represented) in September. A part of its ongoing outreach, the parish has a regular and ongoing food collection for a local food pantry and is beginning to form a “Sunshine” group aimed at ministering to ill and shut-in parishioners. Saints Peter and Paul Church, Phoenix, AZ, continued to focus on parish growth and reaching out to the broader community. Again last December, the parish community opened its arms and doors to our neighbors by sponsoring a Christmas/Saint Nicholas celebration for children and families living in the neighborhood of the church, primarily in a low-income housing apartment building. Parishioners donated gifts (the participating children are invited to provide their gender, age, and a "wish list" which are given to parishioners to assist in shopping) which are distributed by Saint Nicholas when he visits the party that is held for the children. Each family also received a food basket (bigger than ever this year) which included hams and other holiday foods. More than 60 children received gifts this year. The parish youth also participated by wrapping gifts, decorating the parish center, providing entertainment and by coordinating the refreshments that were served at the party. It is planned that this will be held again this year, the fourth year in a row. School Supplies Distribution – For the second year, our parish gathered and distributed much-needed and much-appreciated school supplies to children in our neighborhood. Through their dedication to their parish communities, the clergy of the Desert Deanery continue to exhibit fidelity and stability in pastoral care to the life as well as to the growth of the parishes within the Deanery, and thus to the overall life, wellbeing, and mission of the Diocese of the West. The clergy are assisted in this work by many able and competent parishioners who live their commitment to the Church by offering their services in all areas of parish life. It bears noting that, while the local mission communities remain under the auspices of the Mission Deanery, the clergy of the Desert Deanery are likewise fully committed to outreach and missionary activity, willingly embracing the fact that each community of every deanery, both established parishes and newly- established missions, are involved in the work of evangelization. As in last year’s report, it is important to note that the clergy of the Desert Deanery and their parish communities continue to participate in local inter-Orthodox activities and events, primarily in the area of coordinating inter-parish Lenten Vespers as well as various charitable and social organizations and events.

Clergy The Right Reverend DANIEL, Bishop of Santa Rosa, Rector Archpriest David Balmer, Attached Deacon John Weiss, Attached Committees/Societies Saints Peter and Paul Parish Council - The Parish Council officers and members meet monthly for eleven months of the year. In keeping with the Statute of the Orthodox Church in America, the Diocesan Bylaws of the Diocese of the West, and the Saints Peter and Paul Parish Bylaws, the Parish Council assists the Rector in general areas of parish administration, oversees maintenance of parish properties and facilities, and provides assistance, input, advice, and support in the areas of outreach, education, and the daily life of the parish community.

Saints Peter and Paul Parish Choir - Barbara Harp, Director. The parish choir, composed of 25 persons (+/-), both youth and adults, serves the parish community through its commitment to singing at the regularly-scheduled Divine Services as well as for Holy Week, Great Feasts, and other occasional celebrations, including Baptisms, Funerals, and Weddings.

Subdeacons, Readers, and Altar Servers - The Subdeacons, Readers, and Altar Servers fulfill their assigned duties by serving and reading at the Divine Liturgy and the other Divine Services. Under the direct supervision of Bishop Daniel and headed by Subdeacon Michael Wagner, they also assist, as requested, in maintaining the good order and cleanliness of the parish temple.

Myrrhbearers Altar Society - The Myrrhbearers Altar Society, Heather Elizabeth Pfeiffer, President, provides for the purchase and care of liturgical items and vestments, most notably purchasing and cleaning vestments for the clergy and servers as well as the various coverings and Altar coverings used in the temple. The members work together closely to oversee and/or host the weekly Sunday coffee hours as well as hosting other parish celebrations and social events, e.g. the annual Lenten Vespers hosted at Saints Peter and Paul, the annual Patronal Feastday Luncheon, Nativity Eve Holy Supper, Mothers Day and Fathers Day luncheons, Pascha Agape Potluck, etc. Flowers decorating the temple regularly throughout the year and for the Great Feasts and other special occasions are provided and/or coordinated by the MBAS. Funds are raised through nut roll bakes for Christmas and Pascha, cookie sales, and bread bakes for Pascha.

Church School - Coordinated by Stephanie Homyak, who is assisted by several teachers, aides, and parents, our Church School classes meet regularly on Sundays throughout the year, providing religious education and social interaction for our parish children and youth. The Church School has also organized various programs and activities throughout the year, participating in various charity efforts as we as our annual Saint Nicholas Day Yolka and the "Easter Egg Hunt" on Pascha following Agape Vespers. The students have also reached out to our parish shut-ins and sick by making greeting cards for them. We are using the Catechesis of

DOW Assembly 2019 8 Delegate Book 2 the Good Shepherd for our younger students and have a wonderful response to this by both the students and parents.

Saints Peter and Paul Website and Facebook Page - Our parish website (sspeterpaulaz.org; Subdeacon Michael Wagner, Webmaster) serves as a resource for members of the parish community and has become a point of contact and information resource for persons seeking the Orthodox Faith in the Phoenix area as well as for Orthodox Christians and others who may be visiting the Phoenix area and desire to attend Sunday Divine Liturgy. Contact information for the Rector, Parish Council, and other parish organizations and ministries is provided on the website. The parish Facebook page (Saints Peter and Paul ), Sterling Sourk, coordinator, also contributes to parish outreach and communication.

Parish Newsletter - Our monthly parish newsletter, Stephanie Homyak, editor, provides the calendar of monthly events, articles, Rector's messages, announcements, and educational information. It is also posted on the parish website. Additionally, a weekly flier is distributed on Sunday mornings which includes the Scripture readings of the day and an updated prayer list. This is prepared weekly by Joffa Mauskopf-Appelgate. This is greatly ppreciated by most of our parishioners.

Parish Maintenance Committee - Our parish maintenance committee, overseen by David Homyak, oversees and addresses the ongoing regular and special maintenance needs of our parish building and properties. As part of ongoing maintenance and improvements, a bluetooth- enhanced sound system was recently installed to assist our hearing-challenged parishioners in their participation in the Divine Services.

Volunteer Committee - David Bieber chairs our parish Volunteer Committee which has as its purpose the coordination of volunteers for various parish organizations and special projects. A list of volunteers and their areas of special interest or expertise and ability is maintained and individuals (and groups) are called upon as needed.

Fellowship of Orthodox Christians in America (Phoenician "O" Club, Chapter 219) - The officers and members of FOCA Chapter 219, all of whom are also involved in other areas of parish life and service, support specially-designated FOCA national charities, e.g. youth ministry and Saint Herman of Alaska Seminary. Occasional fundraisers assist with this type of charitable outreach beyond the parish. The FOCA has also sponsored special social events for parish youth, young adults, and families.

Continuing Faith Formation - "Adult Education Classes" are aimed at providing further formation in the faith for adult members of the parish and are held throughout the year. Classes are attended by parishioners, members of other parishes, and enquirers. A recent successful series of classes covered the topic of Orthodox Christian Marriage and family life.

Arizona Council of Eastern Orthodox Clergy - Bishop Daniel, Rector, supports the work of the local clergy council. The council coordinates such events as retreats and fundraisers (e.g. the annual "Arizona Walk for Missions") and also serves as a local clearing house for local concerns and issues affecting the life of the 14 Orthodox parishes in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The All Saints Orthodox Summer Camp, an inter-Orthodox camp in which our youth participate, is presently coordinated through the ACEOC. It also provides online updates on parish

DOW Assembly 2019 9 Delegate Book 2 information, a calendar of local events, and general resources for the overall community on its website: azorthodox.org.

Teen and Young Adult League (T/YAL) - Coordinated by Elijah and Anne Ferbrache, the T/YAL invites teenagers, college-age, young married couples, and "20's-30's" to come together for various activities on an age-appropriate basis. Generally, an event is planned for each month through the year, alternating between social gatherings and outreach and social service projects. Our teens and young adults are also involved in most aspects of our parish life.

Since August 2018 Highlights of Top Three Activities Arizona Missions Walk - For the eighth consecutive year, the parishioners of Saints Peter and Paul Church once again coordinated the annual "Arizona Walk for Missions." Antonia Adams- Clement is “founder” and the principal organizer. Although an inter-Orthodox event involving most of the local Orthodox parishes and enjoying the participation of several local clergy, the inspiration for the event, motivation, leadership and administration were once again mostly from our parish. This annual event splits the raised funds between Project Mexico and OCMC. OCMC reports that this is the largest such parish effort in the United States. Over $35,000.00 has been raised in the past few years.

Neighborhood Christmas Outreach - Again this past December, the parish community opened its arms and doors to our neighbors by sponsoring a Christmas/Saint Nicholas celebration for children and families living in the neighborhood of the church, primarily in a low-income housing apartment building. Parishioners donated gifts (the participating children are invited to provide their gender, age, and "wish list" which are given to parishioners to assist in shopping) which are distributed by Saint Nicholas when he visits the party that is held for the children. Each family also received a food basket (bigger than ever this year) which included hams and other holiday foods. More than 60 children received gifts this year. This year, the mothers were also given a special gift basket of perfumes and toiletries. The parish youth also participated by wrapping gifts, decorating the parish center, providing entertainment (facepainting and games) and by coordinating the refreshments that were served at the party. It is planned that this will be held again this year, the fourth year in a row. School Supplies Distribution – For the second year, our parish gathered and distributed much-needed and much-appreciated school supplies to children in our neighborhood. This effort and the Christmas Outreach were both coordinated by David Bieber and Bill Weiss.

Hosting Exaltation of the Holy Cross Mission –Holy Cross Mission, a mission community of the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of America (OCA), found itself without a place to worship due, primarily, to financial concerns and the desire to retain funds. With the blessing of Archbishop Benjamin and Archbishop Nathaniel, and with the support of Bishop Daniel, this community has been worshipping with the Saints Peter and Paul community since before the beginning of Great Lent. Clergy, servers, and choir members have joined in serving and singing. It is anticipated that they will move into their new home before the end of the calendar year. Their need for a temporary home provided out community with an opportunity to offer hospitality and also proved to be a blessing as new friendships have been formed among some of the members of both communities. Outreach and Charitable Activities

DOW Assembly 2019 10 Delegate Book 2 Andre House and Feed My Starving Children are two charities that are supported by our Teen and Young Adult League (T/YAL). Andre House, a facility located in downtown Phoenix, provides meals, showers, and counseling to people living on the streets. Feed My Starving Children is a nation-wide outreach to families and children in need which invites various church and not-for-profit groups to assist in the packaging of food and meals for distribution.

Saint Mary's Food Bank - Our parish community continues to support the work of Saint Mary's Food Bank, a large and well-known local charity. This Phoenix-based operation serves the substantial needs of the elderly, ill, homebound, and homeless in the Phoenix metropolitan area and throughout the state. Our ongoing collection of food and dry-goods are transferred to Saint Mary's Food Bank on a regular basis for eventual distribution throughout its state-wide system.

Project Mexico and Saint Innocent Orphanage- Through a monthly collection, the parish helps support the work of Saint Innocent Orphanage by providing for the salary of a tutor for students at the orphanage. As noted above, in June five of our young adults from the Teen and Young Adult League also participated directly in the building of a home at Project Mexico with financial support for this project being obtained through fund raisers they had sponsored.

Additional Charitable Assistance- Charitable assistance is also provided, whenever possible, to persons who make their way to our church, either on weekdays during office hours or during the hours of services, primarily on weekends. This often takes the form of sharing food, such as may be available during coffee hours or the making of sandwiches and giving of bottled water or juices. Assistance is also given by referring individuals in need to other organizations and institutions which are better suited to meeting their needs. Major Challenges Faced Again this year, we acknowledge that the major challenge facing Saints Peter and Paul Church continues to be demographic and geographic. Parishioners live in all regions of the Phoenix metropolitan area, some driving over an hour each way to attend services. The distance and traffic challenges make it difficult for most to participate in any weekday services or activities. Additionally, our growing number of young families have weekday school, sport, and arts commitments that, added to driving distances, make it difficult to participate in weekday services or educational or service programs.

Our parish has seen significant growth over the past few years. However, the majority of growth has been the result of transfers from other parishes and from those who have newly moved into the Phoenix metropolitan area. We are still seeking to establish a greater presence in our area of the City of Phoenix with the aim being the attracting of new converts to the Orthodox Faith.

Ministry to Russian immigrants will be given a higher priority in the coming year and will include more, and more obvious, efforts to reach out to the Russian Orthodox living in the Phoenix area. We have come to know many of them through various events throughout the year, but have not yet been able to identify a successful way to bring them into greater participation in community life.

Additionally, a Community Outreach Committee has assumed the task of identifying efficient ways to be of service to the general community in the neighborhood of the parish church. Upcoming Special Events/Anniversaries - October 2019 to September 2020

DOW Assembly 2019 11 Delegate Book 2 Annual Retreat- A parish retreat is being planned to take place in mid-November, at the beginning of the Nativity Fast. As is our custom, the retreat will also be open to members of other parish communities in the Phoenix area.

Ongoing Renovation and Improvements- It is planned that we will continue to identify needs to improve the adornment of the parish temple and the condition of the buildings and parish property. We have recently replaced all the windows in the temple, resulting in greater security and a significant improvement in the cost effectiveness of healing and cooling.

Iconostasis Renovation – It is hoped that this coming year will see the beginning of a project to renew the temple’s . Installed in 1968 and has not been renovated since. Complicated in its design, it is anticipated that the cleaning of the icons and the repainting and re-gilding of the icon screen will be an extensive project.

Highlights of Top Three Activities

Much of the year has been spent on research and study on a solar electricity project for our church. We dealt with seven companies recommended by parishioners and receive fifteen bids. After discussion and debate we actually chose the lowest cost system. Installation was complete at the end of July and we have been waiting a month for the City of Poway and San Diego Gas & Electricity to sign off.

St John’s Auxiliary paid for a complete set of white vestments (clergy and altar servers) as well as covers for the altar and all icon stands. This is the only set where everything matches!

The Auxiliary also reached a milestone with their Easter Bake Sale by doing sales of over $6,000. The faithful work hard to make pierogi, nut rolls and that much product.

Outreach and Charitable Activities

Every First Sunday is our Adopted Seminarian Sunday when we encourage funds for a student at one of our seminaries. We usually reach well over the $200 a month pledge.

Every third Sunday of every month is Charity Sunday when we collect funds to support charitable projects. So far this year we collected $3,308 for various charities.

DOW Assembly 2019 14 Delegate Book 2 Major Challenges Faced

A major event affecting our parish was the Holy Saturday shooting at the Chabad Temple next door. As a outcome, we have organized a Security Committee to come up with procedure and policies related the an active shooter. There are tons of resources on the internet everywhere from local police to the FBI and Homeland Security. We will also be participating the presentations offered by various resources.

Our Russian parishioners keep coming. Many have become regular participants but many are unchurched and have little interest in joining and supporting the church.

We do have families and young children but many of our parishioners are growing older. The original founders are over forty years older and we have several parishioners in their nineties.

ParlshNameSt.Nicholas Church Page2 of2 DOW Assembly 2019 18 Delegate Book 2 MISSION DEANERY REPORT DIOCESAN ASSEMBLY 2019

There are currently 21 Mission in the DOW.

Almost all the Missions have grown and prospered in the past year.

The Missions in Culver City and Vancouver are both very near capacity and are searching for new and larger homes.

The Mission in Bend is close to opening a coffee house/bookstore/chapel ministry that is expected to source of growth, expansion and exposure.

The two missions in Hawaii are getting more services now due to the help of newly retired Fr. George and Mat. Daria Grey who recently moved there. Most of the focus is on the Kona side. This is a big help!

We welcome two new clergy families to the Diocese and the Deanery.

Fr. Andrew and Mat. Jean Moore have started a the Mission of of St. Mark the Evangelist in Great Falls, Montana. Interest and early attendance is very promising.

Also Fr. Joseph and Mat. Katherine Sharman are beginning a new mission in Montrose, Colorado.

In most cases the Missions are staffed by very effective and dedicated clergy, and are strongly supported by their families.

I find it inspiring to visit these missions and see the level of commitment and sacrifice of the laity.

As most of you know a mission is “all hands on deck”. Virtually the same amount of work as a Parish (often a lot more) and many fewer hands to get it done!

We are fortunate as a diocese to have a strong mission program that inspires us all.

We are also fortunate to have a diocese that effectively supports the growth and development of mission. We could not do what we do without that support.

DOW Assembly 2019 19 Delegate Book 2 Page 2

The Mission Board under the leadership of Peter Schwalbenberg meets once per year to assess the “big picture” of the missions, and to plan strategically plan for the future.

His Eminence and His Grace are both very supportive of the Mission efforts of the Diocese, each visiting and encouraging our missions regularly.

Our Seminary “pipeline” for the future is also encouraging. Three newly ordained priests returned to the Diocese this summer to fill needed positions. There are around five as of last year’s count, with a new crop just starting classes this year. This is a needed and promising development.

I would like to thank those attending the Diocesan Assembly for their support at all levels of our developing mission. Especially for your generosity in the Diocesan Budget.

I would also like to express our appreciation to the family of Harold Homiak for his willed gift of almost $40K to the Mission Funds. Harold was always a friend of mission work in the diocese and we appreciate his gift.

Respctfully in Christ,

Archpriest Matthew Tate

Damian Kuolt, Priest in Charge Committees/Societies Parish Council also serves as the steering committee for Agia Sophia Since August 2018 Highlights of Top Three Activities 1) building our parish family by maintaining regular Divine Services and fellowship 2) initiating a move to a more accessible location to open an Agia Sophia Coffeehouse and Bookstore as our major outreach in conjunction with a much larger and more beautiful Temple that can be seen by every customer that we serve. 3) assuming the operation of a small, 30,000 volume used bookstore that has been a fixture in the community since the 1980s, and maintaining its operation during the renovation for two important benefits: a) generating revenue to cover rent and utlilities during renovation, and b) keeping the customer base engaged and introducing them to the Agia Sophia

DOW Assembly 2019 23 Delegate Book 2 Outreach and Charitable Activities The past Nativity and Pascha we obtained a list of 848 Orthodox and Oriental Christians living in Central Oregon. From it we created a mailing that brought in three Orthodox families who did not previously know there is an Orthodox parish in Bend. Outreach is the key motivation for launching Agia Sophia. The parish will move from its current well-hidden facility to being co-located with the coffeeshop/bookstore. Agia Sophia is the first ‘boutique retail business’ opening in Bend’s newly declared Central District expansion of downtown. Located on the number two East-West arterial, 4 blocks from the ‘walking area’ of downtown, we are ideally suited to become a highly visible and desirable new stop for coffee, books and community events. To date we have progressed through the following: • Initial funding of $45,000 and planning to convert a historic bookstore and remodeling to add a full coffeehouse operation and place of worship • Securing in-kind donors for architectural & engineering work, and partial donation of Plumbing, Electrical, Framing & Finish Carpentry, etc. • Permit Applications, with all plans, engineering assessments and other documents, have been worked on since May, and the Building Permit is finally within a couple weeks of being issued. • Partial remodeling, including framing, HVAC, finish carpentry and fixtures in areas not impeding the building permit inspection process (e.g., ADA Restroom & Kitchen concrete work, framing, plumbing, electrical, drywall, etc.) is being worked on while manning the existing bookstore. • Limited operation of the Bookstore is generating $3,000 per month, which offsets all monthly rent and facility costs, and is on pace to continue for another month or two. • Sourcing for the coffeehouse offering (coffee roasted by Fr. Michael, who serves at the Goldendale Monastery, as well as a local roaster) has begun and we already have a bookstack filled with books from Orthodox monasteries and presses. Major Challenges Faced Building the parish life in Bend faces challenges that will simply take more time: • The beauty and outdoor life of Bend is a distraction. Many people here make the lame-claim that they get their spiritual experience in the mountains, rivers, lakes and forests of Central Oregon • No ‘core’ membership with a deep Orthodox formation. Virtually all members are converts, with only a couple cradle Orthodox, who previously were marginal in their participation in Orthodox parish life. Some of the simplest traditions and understanding that make up an Orthodox ethos are simply unknown. • Converts with little exposure to Orthodoxy. Most members have a deep imprint of their previous Protestant framework that serves as their natural base-line or remains their fallback, even with their adopted overlay of understanding and enthusiasm for Orthodoxy – one example: the fact most all only attend Sundays and simply never make Saturday Vespers, early Matins, weekday services and activities, or even

DOW Assembly 2019 24 Delegate Book 2 Major Feast Days that are not on Sunday a priority. • The beauty of Orthodox Worship. We talk about it, share our experience, but it is barely achievable in our current situation. The physical limitations are being addressed with a plan to emphasize a new worship space with a new iconostasis and all new icons. However, we are in the early building stage for basic readers’ skills. The choir lead by Mat. Joanna, still lacks a musically cohesive core. • Critical Mass is a concept that affects all the challenges above, and we are slowly making progress. On top of the slow growth through catechizing new people, several visitors have declared their intention to move to Bend finding St. Jacob’s fulfilling their prerequisite of having an Orthodox parish. Agia Sophia Coffeehouse and Bookstore requires my own ‘more than full time’ efforts, and the commitment of a half dozen parish volunteers on a somewhat limited basis. The benefit will come from leveraging its place in the community as a platform for introducing potential converts to Orthodoxy. We are blessed that parishioners are supportive and hope for the best, even when not personally engaged. During the first years of operation, it will be critical that others are inspired to take up the work and we ‘own it’, so to speak, on an all-parish level. Built into the Agia Sophia project is the understanding that this is a steppingstone to growth, and that we intend to outgrow it and move into a true Church building. Upcoming Special Events/Anniversaries - October 2019 to September 2020 • October 2019 should see the official opening of the Agia Sophia Coffeehouse and Bookstore. My full focus is on getting the coffeehouse & bookstore operating as soon as possible. • December 2019 is our target for moving in and holding our first Divine Services. Once Agia Sophia is open, we can clear much of the rest of the space to build out our Temple. • Spring 2020 we will be fully active in the Bend event scene and representing Agia Sophia and Orthodoxy at street fairs, town events, etc.

Major Challenges Faced Our current meeting location (a local Catholic university) is limiting our usage of their facility, enough that we are looking for a place to move to—this is a recent development, so we are talking, looking, and praying for a place to go. The mission community, and core, grew a lot through the summer intern experience. This year we have received and felt the blessing of great support and guidance from our dean and Bishop. David serves the parish monthly with Friday evening Vespers, parish council and other meetings, Saturday Liturgy and Fellowship Meal following. The mission tries to do regular Typika meetings on the other weekends. Since August 2018 Highlights of Top Three Activities We had the joy of having Archbishop Benjamin “burn our mortgage" for us in December of 2018. We completely painted the inside of our Temple and put stars on the ceiling. We are just now finishing renovating the bathroom and kitchen of the Church facility.

Outreach and Charitable Activities This year we have two parishioners who are participating in OCMC outreaches to Alaska and Guatemala. We also have a Church Rummage and Bake sale every Fall that provides great exposure of our Church to the community. We also contribute to the local pregnancy center and Inter-faith charity. Major Challenges Faced We had a pipe burst in our kitchen that flooded half of our building (study area, Church Office, bathroom and Fellowship Hall) on the day our Archbishop was coming to visit! With help from our parishioners (and the insurance company) we were able to get everything back in working order and looking better than ever. Major Challenges Faced 2018 was a year of sorrow and difficult change for the parish. Our beloved Matushka Mary fell asleep in the Lord in February. In November, Fr Athanasius Shaw who was serving as our interim pastor also fell asleep in the Lord. Throughout the year, the parish has worked to maintain the life and action of its community while waiting for a new priest. Now that Fr Michael has been assigned, our biggest challenge is to re-establish our property search committee and locate a larger property to address over-crowding at our current location and continue to grow our expanding mission.

Your Eminence, Your Grace, Members of the Diocesan Council, Reverend Fathers, Devout Deacons, and Esteemed Lay Delegates,

Glory to Jesus Christ!

The Pacific Central Deanery continues to grow and prosper by the grace of Almighty God, and due to the self-sacrificial love and pastoral care shown to us by our beloved Archbishop BENJAMIN and his co-laborer for our salvation Bishop DANIEL. May God grant them many and blessed years!

The Pacific Central Deanery is blessed by its proximity to our beloved Hierarch, Archbishop Benjamin, and his historic and God-pleasing cathedral in San Francisco. Our cathedral, parishes and monasteries include Holy Trinity Cathedral in San Francisco, St. John the Baptist Russian Orthodox Church in Berkeley, Nativity of the Holy Virgin Russian Orthodox Church in Menlo Park, Christ the Saviour Russian Orthodox Church in San Francisco, Holy Myrrhbearing Women Russian Orthodox Church in West Sacramento, St. Innocent Orthodox Church in Pleasanton, St. Michael Orthodox Church in Concord, the Monastery of St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco (men's monastery) in Manton, St. Seraphim/Protection of the Virgin Orthodox Church, Santa Rosa, Monastery of the Holy Assumption, Calistoga (a Women's Monastery), the Skete of Our Lady of Kazan (Women's Monastery), Santa Rosa; St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, San Anselmo; Elevation of the Holy Cross, Sacramento; St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, Saratoga; St Christina of Tyre in Fremont, St Innocent Orthodox Church in Eureka, and (at least historically,) Holy Trinity Chapel, Fort Ross.

We are blessed to have vibrant parishes with dedicated and Christ-loving pastors, and devout, hardworking laypeople. We have 3 new priests – Priest Nicholas Carr at St. Seraphim in Santa Rosa, Priest Peter Fermeglia in Concord, and Priest Augustine Lewton in Pleasanton. We had two priests leaving – Fr. Michael Regan, our dear friend and concelebrant who has

DOW Assembly 2019 65 Delegate Book 2 retired and moved to Oregon, and Fr. John Karcher, who has taken a new assignment in Portland. We will miss you!!

As always we thank God that we have a clergy brotherhood that truly loves each other. We have made a concerted effort to visit each others’ parishes for Altar Feasts or other important occasions. The Archbishop has also gathered us together for prayer, food and fellowship: once during Great Lent, and once during Bright Week. He provides the food for us and our families. (The second gathering has better food!)

The Deanery enjoys an annual Labor Day picnic for all OCA clergy and families that reside within the territory of the Deanery. (All Mission Deanery clergy are always invited to everything.) It normally takes place at Lake Elizabeth in Fremont, and consists of a pot-luck, the grilling of various proteins, story-telling, networking, occasionally the singing of camp songs, and/or folk songs. We ordinarily get 10 – 15 clergy families, along with the Archbishop.

Our St. Eugene’s Summer Camp for kids was a roaring success again this year. For the past two years the Camp has been held at Sugar Pine Christian Camps, in the piney mountains above Oakhurst, California, near Yosemite. Due to the God-pleasing, yet exhausting efforts of Archpriest Michael Anderson, (director,) and Kathy Pieracci (co-directrix & treasurer), and MANY others, our one-week Camp was both spiritually rewarding AND lots of fun for our nearly 70 kids! Sadly, both Fr. Michael and Kathy announced that this would be their last year. Fr. Andrew Smith agreed to be next year’s interim director. Huzzah!

Your Servant in Christ,

Archpriest Basil Rhodes - Dean

DOW Assembly 2019 67 Delegate Book 2 Our parish continues its ministry to both the Russian Orthodox and greater Orthodox community in the East San Francisco Bay. Services are carried out in both in English and Church Slavonic. Under the direction of Anastasia Klimko, the choir continues to improve and expand its repertoire. We have recently learned that there are between 200-300 Orthodox Guatemalans livings in the East Bay, who are without a parish. There is interest in the parish of reaching out to these people, despite limited Spanish language resources. The parish earns most of its income from rental properties (4 apartments, 2 houses). However, our buildings are in constant need of repair and maintenance. Most of our parishioners live neither in Berkeley or Oakland, but in or around Walnut Creek, Concord, and Pleasant Hill. Perhaps it is time to consider relocating? Catechetical classes will be offered in the Fall in both English and Russian. Since October 2018 Highlights of Top Three Activities

1. This year primary highlight (other than our Paschal and other festal celebrations) was participating and having a booth at the Fremont Festival of the Arts (see Outreach section).

2. This past year has been a year to do a variety of long overdue and much need construction projects. The church temple received new exterior windows and French doors (we can even open them now!), fixed siding on the front of the building, and was repainted. We are currently in the process of having new flooring installed in the nave of the church temple.

3. This year we held our Annual Banquet in February and it is always a wonderful evening with people reporting such positive experiences from attending. Outreach and Charitable Activities

DOW Assembly 2019 74 Delegate Book 2

Outreach 1. This year we had a presence at Fremont’s Festival of the Arts which draws approximately 400,000 people each year. We created and set up a booth in the Business Marketplace area and were able to do so at a reduced non-profit rate. The booth was designed to give people the opportunity to interact with various parts of it including a “Prayer Corner” where people could go in a screened area to pray. While we were not thronged with people, there were a number of people who came and prayed or asked parish members to pray with them. Other people did take time looking at various displays we had up in the booth. It was, overall, a very constructive and fruitful enterprise and we are planning on doing it again next year. 2. Beginning in the Fall we offer a “Orthodox Christianity 101” Class. It attracts non-Orthodox who do not know the teachings of the Church as well as Orthodox Christians who are looking for a “refresher” in the basics of the Faith. We advertise this locally in the Tri- City area. 3. Our weekly “Father’s Cafe” held on Tuesdays from 10-11:30am has proven to be an excellent place for inquirers/seekers to come and get a first taste of the life of the Church. This is a very informal gathering of coffee and tea that begins and ends with prayer, has a short spiritual reading, and allows attendees to ask questions, discuss all kinds of issues of the day, or converse about their favorite movies. Either Fr. Michael or parishioners will offer church tours to newcomers. 4. In October we held our annual Open House, Community Yard Sale & Bake Sale to encourage people to come, meet the community and perhaps learn about the Orthodox Church. People brought items from their homes to sell and baked all kinds of tasty treats to sell. We had DVDs about the Orthodox Church running in different places. Our bookstore is open and available to visitors. We had someone in the church temple to greet people and give impromptu tours to folks who wanted to come and see. 5. On the Sunday of St. Mary of Egypt we annually hold an “Old World Bake Sale” for which parishioners made ethnic treats. Since our community is so ethnically diverse, we had baked goods from many ethnic backgrounds. We advertised in the local newspapers and had an excellent turnout from both Orthodox Christians in the area (many of whom had not known there was a church in Fremont) as well as non-Orthodox who were very interested in the ethnic goodies. We are finding that people are returning from year to year and are looking for the ads.

Charities 1. We continue to serve lunch the first Saturday of every month at the ABODE Tri- Cities Sunrise Village Homeless shelter in Fremont. 2. Each month, the parish sends financial support to the Kazan Skete in Santa Rosa. This is a line item in the budget that is supplemented by a charities collection box that is always out on our “welcome table” or on the food table during our fellowship hour. 3. We have a Local Needs/Good Samaritan Fund to help people in the community. 4. We are participants in the local Tri-Cities Volunteers' Food Drive collecting healthy nonperishable foods for people in need in Fremont, Newark and Union City. 5. We regularly collect supplies (“proteins”) for the members of the military in coordination with Blue Star Moms. 6. We have drives for school supplies & Christmas presents to help the children of our local ABODE family homeless shelter here in Fremont as well as other local agencies and Orthodox institutions which serve children such as St. Herman’s Seminary, 7. We are a participant and supporter of the annual IOCC Benefit Dinner in the Bay Area. Collections Throughout the year we hold collections for various ministries taking place in our Diocese, the DOW Assembly 2019 75 DelegatePage Book 2 of 24

Orthodox Church in America and the Orthodox Church worldwide. These include: a Father’s Day benefit luncheon to contribute to the Gobezhe Goshu Home for the elderly in Ethiopia; a Mother’s Day collection to support our local St. Eugene’s youth camp:; a summer-time collection to support families at St. Herman’s Seminary in Alaska; a collection for the Orthodox Seminary in Africa in cooperation with the Orthodox Christian Mission Center (OCMC), a collection for Orthodox Christian Fellowship in connection with SCOBA's annual College Student Sunday in September.

Major Challenges Faced The Bay Area attracts people due to the job market and general appeal of Northern CA. However, when people get transferred for their work we also lose people. The cost of living in area also often leads people to relocate especially at retirement. Fortunately, we have also gained families by God’s grace and our various outreach efforts. Also traffic in the area is getting increasingly problematic. Throughout the week commutes to work are sometimes doubling. This effects people’s desire to get into their car to come to parish events. We are trying to respond to this by having our educational classes available to participate online. There is also a general reduced willingness among parishioners to take on responsibilities and projects. Upcoming Special Events/Anniversaries - October 2017 to September 2018 Community “Retreat” – Nov 10th – Houria Krista West will be leading a one-day retreat entitled “” We will be inviting nearby Orthodox parishes as well as publicizing to the public in the Tri- City area.

Since August 2018 Highlights of Top Three Activities We made a large effort towards a fundraiser that was enjoyable and increased our visibility. St. Innocents has recently received a large donation that will allow the parish to pay off the mortgage by end of this fiscal year. We are now serving the Divine Liturgy for every Major Feast.

Outreach and Charitable Activities St. Innocent donates monthly to two our diocesan Monasteries. We collect and donate food and clothing supplies to the Livermore Homeless Refuge.

Major Challenges Faced The challenge of seeing an extremely stabilizing and longsuffering priest, Fr. John and the Karcher family, leave. We also lost the directorship of a very dynamic choir director. The parish is in a rebuilding stage on those particular fronts.

Upcoming Special Events/Anniversaries - October 2019 to September 2020

We greatly anticipate His Eminence visiting us the weekend following the Diocesan Assembly. As well as a mortgage burning party preceding our Annual Parish Meeting.

Outreach and Charitable Activities Archangel Michael Food Closet – Serving over 60 families a month, with families receiving food assistance twice a month St. Xenia Project – serving local group home residents with essential supplies, regular visits, and Christmas gifts UC Davis OCF – college ministry Major Challenges Faced Our current worship space is nearing capacity on Sundays, and we recognize the need to move forward with our building program. However, project costs have remained the largest obstacle. We are in the process of conducting a stewardship education in preparation for our first phase of the building project. Making sure that the parish operating budget and stewardship generally does not suffer as a result of increased focus on the building program is a concern.

Committees/Societies The actual framework of the parish community can be broken down into eight ministries: Liturgy & Music, Temple Caretakers, Fellowship & Parish Service, Parish Operations, Education, Good Works & Community Outreach, Finance, and Maintenance & Capital Improvements. ALL Parish members are invited to become active participants of ministries and leaders of each group comprise the parish council.

Since August 2018 Highlights of Top Three Activities We completely changed the venue of our booth at San Anselmo Country Fair Day. It used to function mainly as PR for our Bazaar. Now the focus is community outreach The booth also functions as a chapel and we even bring our 17th icon of St. Nicholas.

We inaugurated the next major phase of our ongoing iconography project with Dmitri Shkolnik.

We hosted His Beatitude, Metropolitan Tikhon on the eve of the Sunday of Orthodoxy.

Outreach and Charitable Activities We host a local "12 step" meeting as well as the local community garden meetings at our facilities. We regularly support IOCC, OCMC, St. Eugene's Camp, Homeward Bound, the Marin Pregnancy Clinic, Faith in Practice, (a medical mission in Guatemala), St. Vincent De Paul Dining Room (local soup kitchen), Red Cloud Indian School, St. John's and Holy Assumption Monasteries and the Africa Education Fund. We invite the neighborhood twice a year to our outdoor square dances. Our church school children march in the annual town Country Fair Day parade accompanied by a float with icons and bell ringing. On Theophany we have a cross procession from the church through the center of town for the public blessing of San Anselmo Creek.

Major Challenges Faced

DOW Assembly 2019 85 Delegate Book 2 The enormously high cost of living forces many of the faithful to relocate in more affordable areas. Our greatest challenge is facing the complexities of an effective outreach to the local community around us while simultaneously ministering to the Slavs in the North Bay who come to St. Nicholas. No matter how much we downplay the "ethnic card," the neighborhood still sees us as the "Russian" church. Many seekers are reluctant to make a lifetime commitment to something that despite being so aesthetically compelling, nevertheless can be easily dismissed as "not for me" because it's labeled as "foreign." On the other hand, the Slavic flavor offers a look of authenticity as opposed to some of the more trendy postmodern spiritual alternatives in Marin County.

Upcoming Special Events/Anniversaries - October 2019 to September 2020

November 10- The annual Bay Area IOCC fundraiser: Coming Home will be hosted in Marin County this year. Members of St. Nicholas are part of the steering committee and hopefully our parish band, the Nikolai Ensemble, will be able to provide dance music at the banquet. Dec. 5-6: Altar feast of St. Nicholas and archpastoral visit by His Eminence, Archbishop Benjamin.

Major Challenges Faced

Report of the Pacific Northwest Deanery Archpriest John Pierce, Dean

August 31, 2019

The Pacific Northwest Deanery consists of: St. Spiridon Cathedral, Seattle WA (1895), Archpriest Yuri Maev, Rector; St. Nicholas Church, Portland OR (1895), Priest John Karcher, Acting Rector; Holy Resurrection Church, Tacoma WA (1896), Archpriest John Pierce, Rector; St. Anne Church, Corvallis, OR (1990), Archpriest Stephen Soot, Rector; St. Katherine Church, Kirkland WA (1998), Archpriest Barnabas Powell, Rector; St. Herman of Alaska Church, Port Townsend, WA (2000), Priest Daniel Lattier, Acting Rector; St. Elizabeth the New Martyr Church, Poulsbo, WA (2001), Archpriest John Strickland, Rector. Two retirements of long serving Deanery Rectors and their replacement by younger priests marks this summer’s most significant changes in our deanery. Fr. John Karcher takes over for Fr. George Gray at St. Nicholas Church in Portland; and as Fr. Nicholas Kime retires, Fr. Daniel Lattier is the new Acting Rector at St. Herman Church in Port Townsend. Both Frs. George and Nicholas oversaw the building and consecration of new temples, and both made significant contributions to our deanery and diocese. A blessed retirement to both! Both major urban hubs of our Deanery, Seattle and Portland, have strong and dedicated Pan-Orthodox associations. Our Deanery parishes and missions are integral parts of these associations which provide worship, mission and fellowship opportunities for the clergy and faithful. Albany/Corvallis, being further from the Portland area, and having only a handful of small Orthodox parishes and missions, has fewer opportunities for this type of Pan-Orthodox involvement. The Pacific Northwest Deanery met January 31 at Spiffy’s Restaurant along the I-5 corridor near the town of Chehalis, about halfway between Port Townsend in the north and Corvallis in the south. We invite the clergy and delegates of the Mission Deanery parishes in our area to attend. High on the agenda is planning the upcoming Deanery Camp session. As in the past four years, the most significant activity this year was the Pacific Northwest Orthodox Youth Camp for children 1st – 12th grade, June 24-27 at the All Saints (Greek Orthodox) Camp in Gig Harbor, WA. Fr. Barnabas Powell of St. Katherine Church in Kirkland, WA is our camp “co” camp director along with his dear wife, Protinica Elizabeth. Activities included swimming, canoeing, arts & crafts, campfires & games. Fr. Barnabas was joined by Fr. John Pierce of Holy Resurrection, Tacoma, WA; Fr. Stephen Soot of St. Anne, Corvallis, OR; and Fr. Daniel Lattier of St. Herman Church, Port Townsend, WA. His Eminence has blessed the Pacific Northwest Orthodox Youth Camp with a heavenly patron, St. Sebastian of Jackson and San Francisco. The next session of Camp St. Sebastian is scheduled for June 29-July 2, 2020. As we write this report, we have completed yet another wonderful session of our local parish family campout at Mount Rainier National Park in Washington, August 25-18. Invitations go out to our parishes in the Puget Sound. We reserve two group sites, with some people reserving their own sites, or rooms at the nearby National Park Lodge. Worship (a tabernacle in the wilderness), meals and campfires are held in common, hikes are planned, otherwise families are free to roam about the park in the daytime at their own leisure.

Respectfully Submitted by Archpriest John Pierce

Committees/Societies Under the auspices of our Parish Council, our Charity Committee coordinates monthly Salvation Army meals and quarterly hands-on activities.

Since August 2018 Highlights of Top Three Activities 1. Last September, we closed on the purchase of an adjacent, 2.5-acre lot, bringing our campus to nearly 4 acres. This now includes a second church building, which is rented to another congregation to help pay our mortgage. 2. We were formally granted parish status by His Eminence and are continuously working to repair and remodel our church buildings and grounds. 3. We currently have two parishioners enrolled in the DVP and are experiencing an attendance growth spurt. Outreach and Charitable Activities 1. Monthly Salvation Army dinners, in addition to quarterly, hands-on activities: Congregations for the Homeless, Woodinville Storehouse food pantry, ringing bells for the Salvation Army red kettles, making sandwiches and delivering them to women living in their cars at a Methodist church parking lot, etc. 2. We sent another dozen volunteers to Project Mexico this summer, part of an annual, local, pan-Orthodox contingent our parishioners have organized for the past 7 years. 3. Our primary evangelical outreach is parishioners inviting friends. Major Challenges Faced 1. Our monthly mortgage is 5-digits. Thankfully, income from tenants helps offset some of that. This requires a considerable investment in tenant relations and property management from our clergy and Parish Council. 2. Repairs, maintenance and upgrades to our 1970s-era buildings is a major commitment. While an overall remodel with aesthetic, iconographic and acoustic improvements remains a goal, safety and liability-related issues continually arise

DOW Assembly 2019 102 Delegate Book 2 as priorities. For example, 2 of our 10 water heaters just began to fail and require replacement. This year we also had to invest $48,000 into replacing our fire and burglar alarm systems, whose control panel had begun malfunctioning, sending false alarms to police and resulting in fines. Finding qualified vendors willing to provide bids can be quite time-consuming and perhaps even a greater challenge than funding. However, having been a mission for 20 years, we’re so very grateful for these challenges of ownership! No more property search! Upcoming Special Events/Anniversaries - October 2019 to September 2020 1. Deacon Dumitru to be elevated to Protodeacon during His Eminence’s visit, slated for January. Hopefully, one of our DVP students may also be tonsured a Reader. 2. Twenty-one years as a community, as of September 27th.

Highlights of Top Three Activities Fr. John Robinson, who served some Sundays as Deacon last year has taken over the responsibilities of serving the Divine Liturgy on the Lord’s Days after his Ordination by our Archbishop in December 2018. Archbishop Benjamin served with us in the last Sunday of May. Fr. Michael Oleksa served in August and blessed us with his teaching on the Alaskan saints. He was in Ventura to teach education leaders on Cross-Culture Communication. Outreach and Charitable Activities As in all our parishes, our top activity is the regular celebration of the services around the Holy Mysteries of Christ’s Reign at the right hand of the Father in the Holy Spirit. A highlight of those services for us was the visit of His Emminence Benjamen to celebrate our St. Herman Feast day. * Monthly participation in the "Friends of St. Barbara Monastery: The last Sunday of the month, Some of our parishioners have taken responsibility in the work of the monastery. * We have a 2-3 hour study in Holy Tradition on Thursday morning at Church with those who are seeking to grow in the Orthodox Way. We stress living and articulating the Orthodox way. Wednesday at 6:30 PM we serve Vespers. We are serving Vespers and the Liturgy for the major Feast days. Our charities were: Orthodox College Fellowship, Ventura Co, Rescue Mission, Fire Victims through Stewards of the West. DOW Assembly 2019 127 Delegate Book 2 Rocky Mountain Deanery Archpriest Anthony Karbo, Dean

Beloved Master, Fathers, Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The clergy of the Rocky Mountain Deanery began our year together in Bozeman, MT for the patronal feast of St. Anthony. All rectors and active clergy made the trip North. Clergy wives joined us for a concurrent “Matushki retreat” (I can feel Fr. Ian smiling in approval as I type!). In addition to the fellowship and support offered one another throughout the meeting, we engaged in an in depth discussion on “a vision of priesthood” centered on the Russian movie “The Priest”, which we all watched. His Eminence was present, guiding us from his vast experience through various parish and personal challenges uniquely faced by priests. His Eminence walked us through the “Liturgical Directives of Bp. Tikhon” which guide a great degree of liturgical uniformity throughout the diocese to this day.

In addition to our formal meeting, the clergy of the Rocky Mountain Deanery met at one another’s altar feasts where we communicate and support one another. We participated in the deanery sponsored activities of Summer Camp, Winter Youth Retreat, Mission and Work Trips, Divide Blessing, and the planting of new missions. Fr. Stephen Osburn was the speaker at our Rocky Mountain Summer Camp of over 180 persons, where Fr. David Thatcher also presented on the Holy Mystery of Chrismation. Fr. Benjamin Huggins skillfully directed our Summer Camp and Youth Retreats. Fr. David Morrison oversaw yet another very successful Monastery Work Week in Montana for youth and young adults throughout the deanery and diocese. In addition to the mission in Helena, MT being served by deanery clergy, Fr. Moses Hibbard is pursuing mission opportunities in Wyoming. Fr. Joseph Sharman, newly attached to St. Andrew’s parish in Delta, CO, labors for the establishment of a mission in nearby Montrose. Holy Theophany began serving liturgy on the east side of Colorado Springs, seeking to once again further a much needed mission in town. We continue to offer support to Fr. Alexander Vallens and the St. Tikhon Mission on a regular basis, recently providing them with a new iconostasis.

One of our clergy, Deacon Gregory Jewett, was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer. A call was sent out to the deanery clergy, and every one of them heeded the call to participate in the Mystery of Holy Unction on Dn. Gregory’s behalf. He is pursuing treatment, and we ask your prayers for him and his family.

During all these times we encourage one another with respect to priest/family well-being, spiritual growth, and pastoral issues encountered. There is a strong brotherhood amongst deanery clergy as we share our lives and experiences through these meetings and common events. Deanery clergy additionally participate in the many Orthodox events up and down the front range. Our own camps, mission trips, and teen retreats remain instrumental in enabling hundreds of youth across jurisdictions to form deep and rewarding bonds of fellowship. In addition to those mentioned above, Fr. Zechariah is a faithful presence who continues to minister across the southern boundaries of our deanery. Frs. Simeon Johnson and Panayiotis, in addition to their responsibilities at Holy Theophany, serve throughout the deanery as called upon. Fr. John is a well-respected presence at Orthodox events of the Denver Metro area who continues to grow, deepen, and beautify the Orthodox witness of St. Herman’s in Littleton.

Respectfully submitted, Archpriest Anthony Karbo
