Kontakion in Tone 4 The Entry into the Temple of the Most-holy Theotokos "When the Most-holy Virgin Mary reached the age of three, her holy parents Joachim and Anna took her from Nazareth to Jerusalem to dedicate her to the service of God according to their earlier promise. It was a three-day journey from Nazareth to Jerusalem but, traveling to do a God-pleasing work, this journey was not difficult for them. Many kinsmen of Joachim and Anna gathered in Jerusalem to take part in this event, at which the invisible angels of God were also present. Leading the procession into the Temple were virgins with lighted tapers in their hands, then the Most-holy Virgin, led on one side by her father and on the other side by her mother. The virgin was clad in vesture of royal magnificence and adornments as was befitting the ``King's daughter, the Bride of God'' (Psalm 45:13-15). Following them were many kinsmen and friends, all with lighted tapers. Fifteen steps led up to the Temple. Joachim and Anna lifted the Virgin onto the first step, then she ran quickly to the top herself, where she was met by the High Priest Zacharias, who was to be the father of St. -

IMPORTANT INFORMATION – Please Read! his lexicon began as a personal project to assist me in my efforts to learn more about my faith. All too often in my T readings I was coming across unfamiliar words, frequently in languages other than English. I began compiling a “small” list of terms and explanations to use as a reference. Since I was putting this together for my own use I usually copied explanations word for word, occasionally making a few modifications. As the list grew I began having trouble filling in some gaps. I turned to some friends for help. They in turn suggested this lexicon would be a good resource for the members of the Typikon and Ustav lists @yahoogroups.com and that list members maybe willing to help fill the gaps and sort out some other trouble spots. So, I present to you my lexicon. Here are some details: This draft version, as of 19 December 2001, contains 418 entries; Terms are given in transliterated Greek, Greek, Old Slavonic, Ukrainian, and English, followed by definitions/explanations; The terms are sorted alphabetically by “English”; The Greek transliteration is inconsistent as my sources use different systems; This document was created with MS Word 97 and converted to pdf with Adobe Acrobat 5.0 (can be opened with Acrobat Reader 4.0); Times New Roman is used for all texts except the Old Slavonic entries for which I used a font called IZHITSA; My sources are listed at the end of the lexicon; Permission has not been obtained from the authors so I ask that this lexicon remain for private use only. -

The Icon of the Pochayiv Mother of God: A Sacred Relic between East and West Franklin Sciacca Hamilton College Clinton, New York Introduction There are myriad icons of the Mother of God that are designated as “miracle-working” (chudotvornyi in Ukrainian and Russian) in the Orthodox and Catholic lands of Eastern Europe. Thaumaturgic powers are often ascribed to the icon itself and therefore such panels are venerated with particular devotion. Pilgrims seek physical contact with these objects. From the lands of medieval Kievan Rus’, there are four surviving icons with Byzantine pedigree that achieved “miracle- working” status as early as the 11th c.: The Vladimir icon (known in Ukrainian tradition as Vyshhorod, after the location of the convent north of Kiev where it was originally kept); the Kievo-Pechersk icon of the Dormition; the Kholm icon (attributed to Evangelist Luke); and the so-called Black Madonna of Częstochowa (originally housed in Belz, and for the last 600 years in the Jasna Gora monastery in Poland). All of them are surrounded by complex folkloric legends of origin and accounts of miraculous interventions. The Wonderworking Kursk Icon of Our Lady of the Sign In the 13th century, during the dreadful period of the Tartar invasion of Russia, the devastated province of Kursk was emptied of people and its principal city, Kursk, became a wilderness. Now, the residents of the city of Rylsk, which had been preserved from invasion, often journeyed to the site of Kursk to hunt wild beasts. One of the hunters, going along the bank of the river Skal, which-was not very far from ruined Kursk, noticed an icon lying face down on the ground next to the root of a tree. The hunter picked it up and found that it was an icon of the Sign, such as was enshrined and venerated in the city of Novgorod. At this time, the icon's first miracle was worked, for no sooner had the hunter picked up the sacred image than there immediately gushed forth with great force an abundant spring of pure water. This took place on September 8th in the year 1295. The hunter constructed a small wooden chapel and placed the newly manifested image of the Mother of God therein. The residents of Rylsk began to visit the place of the manifestation of this holy object and the icon was glorified by miracles all the more. Prince Vasily Shemyaka of Rylsk ordered that the icon be brought to the city of Rylsk itself and this was done in a solemn manner, for the people of the city went forth to met the icon of the Mother of God; but Shemyaka himself declined to attend the festivities and for this reason was punished with blindness. -
