Cyril and Methodius University, Faculty of Philosophy Skopje, Macedonia In the substantial written correspondence of Theophylact, Arch bishop of the Ohrid Archbishopric, the people of Ohrid are direcdy made mention of on several occasions. This knowledge allows us to gain valuable insight into the relationship that existed between them and Theophylact. At the same time, it is important to note that, apart from the specific local di mension of significance this carries, the mention of the people of Ohrid fre quently appeared as personification for the Macedonian population in gene ral, which in Theophylact’s letters is most often termed as Bulgarian.1 1 Without a doubt, in the Middle Ages, the terms “Bulgaria”, “Bulgarians” and “Bul garian” did not carry an exclusive and constricted meaning concerning eth nicity, but rather, frequently carried current or former political (subject of state) and/or administrative connotations following the governance and sig nificance of the Romaioi., as well as their state. This is how (formerly subject of state and currently administrative) the designation of the Macedonian population should be interpreted in Theophylact’s letters. Cf: C. Seminal recordings included: David Bowie’s Young Americans; The Rolling Stones’ “Hot Stuff,” “Miss You,” “Dance Pt.1,” and “Emotional Rescue”; KISS’s “Strutter ’78,” and “I Was Made For Lovin’ You”; Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy“; and Elton John’s Thom Bell Sessions and Victim of Love. Though disco-rock was a great commercial success during the disco era, it has received limited acknowledgement in post-disco scholarship. This thesis addresses the lack of existing scholarship pertaining to disco-rock. It examines both disco and disco-rock as products of cultural shifts during the 1970s. Disco was linked to the emergence of underground dance clubs in New York City, while disco-rock resulted from the increased mainstream visibility of disco culture during the mid seventies, as well as rock musicians’ exposure to disco music. My thesis argues for the study of a genre (disco-rock) that has been dismissed as inauthentic and commercial, a trend common to popular music discourse, and one that is linked to previous debates regarding the social value of pop music. -
Byzantium's Balkan Frontier
This page intentionally left blank Byzantium’s Balkan Frontier is the first narrative history in English of the northern Balkans in the tenth to twelfth centuries. Where pre- vious histories have been concerned principally with the medieval history of distinct and autonomous Balkan nations, this study regards Byzantine political authority as a unifying factor in the various lands which formed the empire’s frontier in the north and west. It takes as its central concern Byzantine relations with all Slavic and non-Slavic peoples – including the Serbs, Croats, Bulgarians and Hungarians – in and beyond the Balkan Peninsula, and explores in detail imperial responses, first to the migrations of nomadic peoples, and subsequently to the expansion of Latin Christendom. JETS 61/2 (2018): 231–44 SHOCK AND AWE: THE REFORMERS AND THE STUNNING JOY OF ROMANS 1–8 GWENFAIR WALTERS ADAMS * Abstract: In response to the suggestion of some scholars that the Reformers’ understanding of the gospel was unhelpfully skewed by the idiosyncrasies of their time period, this address (deliv- ered at a plenary session of the 2017 ETS conference) argues that there are four factors in the late medieval world that prepared the sixteenth-century Reformers to understand the gospel at a deep level and respond to it with great joy. It draws on the life of Martin Luther, Ulrich Zwingli’s sermon preached to nuns in a Dominican convent, the Romans commentaries of the Reformers, and the art of Roger van der Weyden, the Lucas Cranachs Elder and Younger, and Michelangelo, to illustrate the transition from medieval to Reformation understandings of the gospel. Invaluable in times of peace, it is indispensable in wartime. All those who are working in the entertainment industry are building and maintaining national morale both on the battlefront and on the home front. 1 Franklin D. Roosevelt, June 12, 1943 Whether or not we admit it, societies change in wartime. It is safe to say that after every war in America’s history, society undergoes large changes or embraces new mores, depending on the extent to which war has affected the nation. Some of the “smaller wars” in our history, like the Mexican-American War or the Spanish-American War, have left little traces of change that scarcely venture beyond some territorial adjustments and honorable mentions in our textbooks. These major conflicts create changes in society that are experienced in the long term, whether expressed in new legislation, changed social customs, or new ways of thinking about government. While some of these large social shifts may be easy to spot, such as the GI Bill or the baby boom phenomenon in the 1940s and 1950s, it is also interesting to consider the changed ways of thinking in modern societies as a result of war and the degree to which information is filtered. -

Akathist Service to Our Lady of Sitka The Sitka Icon of the Mother of God Located at the Cathedral of Saint Michael the Archangel in Sitka, Alaska is one of the most revered Icons in North America: the Sitka Mother of God. This Icon has been attributed to a famous Iconographer, Vladimir Lukich Borovikovsky (1758-1826), a protégé of the Empress Catherine II who was instructed at the Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, Russia. In addition to being a great portrait painter, Borovikovsky also painted many of the Icons for the Cathedral of the Kazan Icon in Saint Petersburg. Painted in the style of the Kazan Mother of God Icon, on canvas, the Sitka Mother of God Icon is 36 x 17-1/2 inches in size. An exceptionally beautiful and detailed riza of silver covers the Icon of the Theotokos and Christ child, and the Image of God the Father blessing from above. The Cathedral received the Icon as a gift from the laborers of the Russian American Company in 1850, two years after the Cathedral was completed. Even with their meager wages, these men generously made their contribution to the Church. Miracles have been attributed to the Sitka Mother of God Icon over the years. It is believed that the gaze of the eyes of the Theotokos have led to the restored health of those who prayed before the Icon. I Because of the peaceful gaze of the Theotokos, the Icon has been described as a “pearl of Russian ecclesiastical art of ineffable gentleness, purity and harmony....” And “...the most beautiful face of the Mother of God with the Divine Child in her arms is so delicately and artistically done that the more one looks at it the more difficult it is to tear one’s gaze away.” Originally part of the main Iconostasis at the Cathedral of Saint Michael the Archangel in Sitka, Alaska, the Icon is now permanently located on the far left side of the Iconostasis in a special place of honor. -
