Being quite knowledgeable of Birchnall had served on her just coming off before her the Chatham Dockyard even though I never served here, loss, this was obviously of interest. After discussion it was and a knowledge I confess largely built on visits to decided that the St George Chapel did not have enough Chatham for 'Ton Class' Spring Weekends, and visits for Public access so it was decided to donate the model to Navy Days many years ago. I also did a large amount of the Chatham Maritime Museum with the proviso that it research for the lottery grant to compound the information could be used for the annual Truculent Memorial in St gained over the years, and to plan maximum enjoyment Georges Chapel each year as the museum is closed at for perceived participants whether RN, Army or RAF. By this time. 3pm I had everything sorted out and did a quick spin around the dockyard to see what had changed since my Initially we applied for a lottery grant to take a mix of ex last visit a year ago when ironically I was researching the Service down on a 54 seater coach for the presentation lottery grant, and had several meetings with dockyard, of Truculent to her Spiritual home, and the plan was to and hotels with regards making the application for the include 17 Sea Cadets and the same number of Air lottery grant. There have been some wonderful Cadets from Derby & Ilkeston to (enjoy) a night on the improvements, including the new reception complex. wartime destroyer Cavalier in the Dockyard, and for them to join us for the presentation. Sadly this plan failed, and I had a quick walk around the site to highlight points to our lottery application was rejected. Thus it was decided our members, and as is usual the staff are highly to undertake a low key, but fitting presentation to committed and helpful. I could not resist looking around Chatham Maritime Museum which would all have to be an exact exhibit of one of my previous homes – The ‘O’ totally self-funded by those wanting to attend. Thus the Boat, HMS Ocelot. But my only defence is the whole planning started with Max Horton QGM volunteering to afternoon was devoted to having answers to the queries refit the submarine, which after twenty years of being to DS Members on this trip; That's my story, and I am neglected (Excuse my loose interpretation of the English sticking to it. I nipped around the site as best as I could in language please Max) was badly in need of some TLC. I the time I had, discovering the Dockyard Church had then revamped the quotes, and sort interest from DS been 'Renovated to a more economic viable use;' namely Members, and confess, I did not expect there to be much a conference centre. This is what I discovered when interest due to the high cost of accommodation, transport calling to see the base vicar to bless our model in and cost of living down south, compared to what we have memory of those lost on Truculent. A couple of donations for others to attend, went to book in at the King Charles and to sort out all the helped, and DS is grateful this trip worked.. This which has always been a mystery to me! Thus checked service was much appreciated by many over the my emails and went for an 8am leisurely breakfast of weekend as it enabled them to get to the far end of the cereal and a Full English. Thence set off for a stroll into dockyard and ride back to the main entrance. The Gillingham to the Co-op which I know is one of the first to professional tour of the Ropery was superb (as always) open with the papers, but on reaching the end of the High and always a highlight especially as it is a working Street, and Gillingham Railway Station, I realised I had commercial venture, as well as a museum. Thus retracing my steps it dawned on me the Co-Op was now a Budgen's Supermarket instead, and one or two shop, including Poundland had shuffled around. I waited until the morning departures subsided at reception and double checked all bookings and made a payment thence put the welcome packs together including one of the Dockyard Information booklets, the individual one year dockyard passes, a note with details of their room number etc and these were placed in reception in case anyone caught me unaware and came early. I thence set off to HSBC, and to get some batteries from Poundland for my alarm clock that had stopped, but I had woken up at 6am as normal anyway. Enroute I passed a long crocodile of army personal, certainly 50+ jogging along two deep and I returned to the rope shed to walk the ¼ mile to the end I assume from the laboured expressions they could have (and return) thence left the longest brick building in had a crate of ale in their haversacks as they jogged Europe, and walked the outside where the TV series 'Call along the pavement heading back to the barracks. Walking the long distance to not resist a cheerful 'Good Morning Gents, I am glad I am the end is worth doing if only to see the wonderful sight of a Naval Pensioner', which fortunately many of them found the many upturned cannons that hold up what I assume amusing!! With all emails answered I started getting my was the original dockyard bike shed, but now parking of 'Check Reports' as requested that our crew were crossing a private firm using the buildings. An easy mistake to make I suppose confusing a massive University Auditorium with all artefacts cleared whopping big bridge in the sky, with a tunnel under the out completely and a grandstand of seating and screens River Thames if you are concentrating on your driving!! for seminars and presentations. A walk along the sea Thus I knew that in about 30 minutes on the A2, the first front was undertaken with a walk through the history of would arrive in about 30 minutes. On arrival of Clifford & the dockyard displays which includes lots of submarine Judy with Peter & Joyce I advised the rooms were not history. I noted that the C17 was the first WWI submarine quite ready and suggested they go down the dockyard built in Chatham and that rang a bell of one of the and I would meet them down there. With the ten minute warning to back and it was agreed after our various wanderings all make our way to the Ropery for the tour the majority would meet back in the bar for a lamp swinging session. except one (Well done Clifford) decided at their table they Colin and Isobel had already eaten but were interested in could not pass a toilet whether they wanted to go or not. joining me for a drink at the pub, while I had a pub meal We however arrived at the Ropery ok for the start, but it of Fish & Chips at £6.50 at Brompton nearby to save was obvious a couple in the party were flagging, and I driving or getting a bus around.

It made me proud of all of you, BZ, and I was humbled that YOU were all going to do it despite my concerns. But soppy as it sounds, I am really proud of all of you. Even the seasoned guide stated he did not think it was possible, but he did not want to underestimate submariners, and I loved the comment on our 1940's and wartime submariners of 'It is difficult to slow them down when they get going' to which I could only comment it could be they are not ignoring your instructions, they may have their hearing aids turned off or cannot hear, a bit like Nelson with his 'I see no Signal'! All will remember this visit for this opportunity to go through Ocelot, not the least Colin Watson showing Isobel around his old home, and most of the ladies had never been down a submarine before. The enjoyment on all your faces today as you emerged from the complete tour of the boat has made up for the terrible disappointment of the failed lottery grant for this wonderful weekend, and honestly I thank all eleven of you for joining in on this weekend. We all meet up tonight for a meal at the Weatherspoon's in Chatham, so time for a bath and dhoeby and catching the bus to have a celebration drink (or two!). During WW1 this town was originally named I think the ‘82 trip (during the Falkland’s War), was to Germantown; early in 1915, after Lt Norman Holbrook’s relieve O’KANAGAN, who had just refitted in Halifax & feat in HMS/M B11, when they torpedoed & sank a they then crossed the ‘Pond’ to exotic Faslane & the long Turkish B/S near the Dardanelles, he was awarded the work-up; we spent a whole running period taking her first RN SM VC & the locals in Germantown voted to place off the East coast of Canada & US, with a session rename their town Holbrook, in his honour. In the park in of running out of Bermuda, with their PC3 MCA. During the middle of Holbrook, there is a scale model of B11 & it that deployment we fully expected a signal telling us to go is now also the home of the former RAN Oberon Class to Bermuda & store for war & then head off to the far Submarine Otway (mainly the Casing & the Fin) & the South, but it never came; however our ‘card was marked’ RAN SM Museum. Meanwhile the Annual K13 Memorial & we did a Falkland’s deployment in 1983; we relieved Service was maintained by the members of the Eastern Warspite. During my last trip to Halifax & the RCN were States Branch of the Submariners Association (formerly having real problems with SM crewing, with Techo’s in SOCA) & this continues to this day. With the introduction particular (their oil companies poached them); I believe of the Collins Class SM’s, that replaced their Oberon’s, that O’KANAGAN’s techo crew, from 77 Bulkhead aft, the RAN S/M Sqn HQ was relocated to be based at were almost 100% recruited from RN SM Techo’s; I HMAS Stirling, at Rockingham (South of Perth), in personally knew a few of these; Tony Fee (Chief Western Australia; after the last two Oberon’s (Otama & Greenie), George Galley (ERA), we had all previously Orion), were decommissioned, HMAS Platypus was served together on OBERON’ski; Taff Jones & Bob decommissioned & the base was handed back to the Pendlebury (both SPO’s); Bob & I had earlier served on NSW Government. As a matter of interest, in Jan 1964, OPOSSUM & we had been next door neighbours at Elson I was a member (ABUW), of the commissioning crew of in Gosport, before they emigrated to Canada. I still have HMS/M Osiris, at Barrow, with the pennant number S13; fond memories of drinking sessions with their notorious we were the first RN SM to use that number since the ill- ‘Mooses Milk’! Regards John fated K13; O/A, at Faslane we attended the Service for D.H.'Buster' Brown eastlink.ca Terry, Would love to but K13, at her Memorial, in the Garelochhead Cemetery. very short notice indeed, Along with a very proud bunch I Regards, John Keating WOUWSM RN/RAN/RANR (Rtd) commissioned her at Chatham and my memories are Submariners Association - Australia Branch vivid. I have cc’d our skipper Lcdr Nigel Frawley (RCN ret’d) who just might have the time and resource to help Following an Appeal by Chatham Dockyard for my out. I know he would glow of the opportunity. Mind your help to contact anyone who served on HMCS Okanagan bubble, Buster Brown in Halifax S74 the following is the result. HMS Tarpon. A team led by museum owner Gert Alex Patterson wrote, Just to follow up our conversation Andersen & marine archaeologist Innes McCartney have about Okanagan. Next Saturday (17 September) marks found the wreckage of the HMS Tarpon, an RN T-class the 50th Anniversary of her launch, and was the final S/M sunk in 1940 by a heavily armed German merchant submarine built here in Chatham. Although short notice, vessel, the Schiff 40. Divers found the Tarpon standing do you think you might be able to put it out on the wires almost upright on the seabed off the coast of Denmark. to see if there is anyone who served on her might be able

The first two years we did the Tom Smith Memorial vote we issued sae to all, but it did not encourage the 100% vote we hoped for, and many handed them in at meetings, and functions making a waste of a lot of money. The decision was taken it was members responsibility to get them to the secretary, but we did warn that obviously a stamp was required if posted following receipt of postage due votes. However, this still occurs and the last couple of months I have driven into the GPO Sorting office to pick up postage due envelopes, including Tom Smith Memorial Votes, and the demand was for at least £2 postage due as no postage stamp had been put on them. My upset is not the demand for £2, but the waste of two hours of my time going into Ilkeston or Derby, fuel and costs
