Die meisten musikinteressierten Menschen kennen Phil Cook über seine Zusammenarbeit mit Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) im Bandprojekt DeYarmond Edison sowie durch die Musik der beiden Nachfolgebands Megafaun und The Shouting Matches. Nach weiteren Kollaborationen mit The Blind Boys Of Alabama, Kathleen Edwards, Matthew E White, The Mountain Goats und vielen anderen tollen Musikern ist nun endlich sein zweites Soloalbum erschienen. „Southland Mission“ (VÖ: 11.09.15 | Thirty Tigers/Middle West) ist, anders als sein sehr reduziertes und intimes erstes Album „Hungry Mother Blues“ (2011), eine tolle Bandplatte geworden. Tief beeinflusst von der Musik des amerikanischen Südens hören wir auf „Southland Mission“ eine moderne Version von Roots-Musik, die voller Herzblut groovt und rockt. Kein Southern Rock, nein, eher das gewichtige und zugleich tief spirituelle und bluesige Feeling von Musik aus New Orleans, Louisana und Carolina. Erinnerungen an die legendären Little Feat drängen sich auf, Ry Cooder könnte ein weiterer Pate dieser besonderen Klänge sein. Nachdem Phil Cook im Oktober 2015 solo als Special Guest auf der Europatour von The Tallest Man On Earth zu erleben war, kommt er nun zum ersten Mal mit seiner Band nach Deutschland, um bei einem exklusiven Berlin-Konzert „Southland Mission“ live vorzustellen. IshDARR brings a crowd Photo by Jun Taek Lee A packed crowd gathered in Gardner on Friday, Nov. 6, to hear from three young hip-hop artists—Young Eddy, Kweku Collins and IshDARR (pictured to the left). IshDARR is based out of Milwaukee, Wis. The sharp-tongued 19- year-old released a critically acclaimed album, “Old Soul, Young Spirit,” earlier this year. He largely pulled material from that album during the performance. The youthful, ecstatic energy of his recorded material transferred seamlessly to the stage. IshDARR was totally engaging for the duration of the set and did not shy away from talking with the audience, eliciting laughter and cheers. It wasn’t a terribly long set, but one that kept the people in attendance rapt from start to finish. Milwaukee is an exciting place to be an MC in 2015. The Midwestern city has recently cultivated a vibrant and dynamic DIY hip hop scene that’s only getting larger. IshDaRR, one of the youngest and most prominent members of the scene, proved on Friday night that he’s got a lot to share with the world. Assuredly, he is only getting started. Friday night was the third time that Young Eddy, aka Greg Margida ’16, has performed on campus and he is sure to have more performances next semester. Kweku Collins hails from Evanston, Ill., and this was his first time performing in Grinnell. He isolated himself in a remote cabin in Wisconsin for almost four months, writing, and recording the songs on For Emma, Forever Ago, his haunting debut album. A few parts (horns, drums, and backing vocals) were added in a North Carolina studio, but for the majority of the time it's just Vernon, his utterly disarming voice, and his enchanting songs. The voice is the first thing you notice. Vernon's falsetto soars like a hawk and when he adds harmonies and massed backing vocals, it can truly be breathtaking. He's an introvert and I feel dominated by extroverts. He's chosen to do his work outside the glamorous music spotlights of LA, New York and Nashville, and he's instead lay down his creative roots in a studio in the backyard of his house in Durham. And he's not aiming for quick hits. He seeks a deep creative partnership with the musicians he works with. He produced the most recent pony bear album. In an interview about it, lead singer Justin Vernon said he produced me as a person Just as much as a musician the last few years. But what does that mean to produce someone as a person? From the 1950s, until the arrival of the Internet, the music industry was controlled by a few large conglomerates that gave little consideration to the interests of the artist or the fan. Musicians were controlled both creatively and financially in order to provide record companies with the greatest potential for financial success, and fans were subjugated to the consumption of relatively few musical genres. In the twenty first century the roles of the record company, artists, and fan have undergone unprecedented changes. Today, technological advancements in the music industry have uprooted the traditional top-down business model and provided musicians with more power and control over their product and greater opportunity to achieve financial success. Artists can now produce, market, and distribute their music around the world for an extraordinarily low cost. Additionally, fans can now experience niche music markets previously unavailable in the music industry.
