DUQUESNE UNIVERSITY virtual commencement ceremony School of Law Friday, May 29, 2020 DUQUESNE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LAW virtual commencement ceremony Friday, May 29, 2020 message from the dean april m. barton, b.s., j.d. Dear Graduates, On the occasion of Duquesne University School of Law’s 106th Commencement (but very first virtual Commencement!), I congratulate you on reaching this important milestone. It is a major achievement to successfully complete your legal studies and receive your Juris Doctor degree. We are extremely proud of your academic accomplishments, which place you among an elite group of legal professionals in the United States who have satisfied the rigorous standards necessary to earn this distinguished degree. Today is a day of great celebration amidst a backdrop of challenge and uncertainty. Throughout this most difficult time, you have persevered. You have completed every course, overcome every hurdle, and passed the finish line. Accomplishing this great goal, now more than ever, took immense courage. Though you are leaving behind your days as law students, you will always remain part of the Duquesne University School of Law family. Please return often to your alma mater to join us for events and to serve as role models for a new generation of graduates. I ask for God’s blessing on each of you in a very special way as you seek to serve our society, the pursuit of justice, and the rule of law, with the many gifts God has granted you. You are no longer students of the law but rather its ambassadors and protectors. On behalf of the entire faculty and staff, student body and nearly 8,000 active alumni of the School of Law, CONGRATULATIONS! commencement speaker honorable judge elliot howsie, l ’98 After graduating from Central Catholic High School, Elliot attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania, earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in criminal justice. Elliot worked in social services, where he met people at low points in their lives and offered a second chance. While working two full-time jobs, Elliot earned his Juris Doctor from Duquesne University School of Law’s Evening Division. He also served as an intern for the Public Defender’s Office and Neighborhood Legal Services. Elliot began his legal career as a law clerk for the Honorable Justin M. Johnson of the Pennsylvania Superior Court. Elliot later served as an Assistant District Attorney in the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office where he prosecuted cases involving child abuse. He later established his own law firm and specialized in criminal law matters and personal injury cases. On March 19, 2012, Elliot was appointed as Allegheny County’s first African American Chief Public Defender. Elliot managed the Allegheny County Office of the Public Defender, providing legal representation to any indigent person charged with a crime who was facing incarceration. Elliot’s dedication ensured quality representation, fairness of process, and equality of resources. As a result, Elliot was chosen to sit on committees to improve the criminal justice system, most notably the Justice Reinvestment Committee. In 2019, Elliot was nominated by Governor Wolf to the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas. He was confirmed in a unanimous vote and serves in the Family Division of the Fifth Judicial District of Pennsylvania. Elliot also serves as Adjunct Professor at Duquesne University School of Law and on the Macedonia FACE Board of Directors.
