SCORA Department of Botany and Plant Sciences University of California Riverside, CA 92521 ABSTRACT.-Papyrus (Cyperus papyrus, Cyperaceae) was a multi-use plant in ancient Egypt. Its main use, however, was for the production of laminated leaves which served as writing material in the Mediterranean world for almost 5000 years. Being a royal monopoly, the manufacturing process was kept secret. PI~us Secundus, who first described this process, is unclear as to the adhesive forces bonding the individual papyrus strips together. Various authors of the past century advanced their own interpretation on bonding. The present authors believe that the natural juices of the papyrus strip are sufficient to bond the individual strips into a sheet, and that any additional paste used was for the sole purpose of pasting the individual dried papyrus sheets into a scroll. RESUMEN.-EI papiro (Cyperus papyrus, Cyperaceae) fue una planta de uso multiple en el antiguo Egipto. Su uso principal era la produccion de hojas lami nadas que sirvieron como material de escritura en el mundo meditarraneo durante casi 5000 anos. Siendo un monopolio real, el proceso de manufactura se mantema en secreto. Plinius Secundus, quien describio este proceso por primera vez, no deja claro que fuerzas adhesivas mantenlan unidas las tiras individuales de papiro. Diversos autores del siglo pasado propusieron sus propias interpretaciones respecto a la adhesion. Consideramos que los jugos naturales de las tiras de papiro son suficientes para adherir las tiras individuales y formar una hoja, y que cual quier pegamento adicional se usa unicamente para unir las hojas secas individuales para formar un rollo. -
Mexico's Indigenous and Folk Art Comes to Chapala
Mexico’s indigenous and folk art comes to Chapala Each year Experience Mex‐ECO Tours promotes a trip which we call the ‘Chapala Artisan Fair’, but this is much more than just a shopping trip; so what’s it really all about? The Feria Maestros del Arte (Masters of Art Fair) is the name given to this annual event in Chapala, and also the name of the non‐profit organization which puts in an incredible amount of work to make it happen. In 2002 an amazing lady called Marianne Carlson came up with the idea of bringing some of the artists and artisans she came across in rural Mexico to Ajijic to sell their high quality traditional work. After a successful first fair, with 13 artists being very well received by the public, Marianne decided to make this an annual event. Providing an outlet for traditional Mexican artists and artisans to sell their work, the Feria Maestros del Arte has provided many families with the opportunity to continue creating Experience Mex‐ECO Tours S.A. de C.V. | www.mex‐ecotours.com | info@mex‐ecotours.com their important cultural representations by allowing them to pursue this as a career, rather than seeking alternative employment. Here is their mission as a non‐profit organization: “To preserve and promote Mexican indigenous and folk art. We help preserve these art forms and the culture that produces them by providing the artists a venue to sell their work to galleries, collectors, museums and corporations. We promote regional and international awareness to the value of these endangered arts.” The efforts made by the Feria committee and its many volunteers mean that the artists and artisans not only have a chance to generate more income in a few days than they may otherwise generate in a year, but also the chance to be recognized by buyers and collectors from around the world. -

Watters Summer Institute of Linguistics To begin with, I’d like to present some voices – what I am hearing about bilingual education for the indigenous people of Mexico, who represent nearly 10% of Mexico’s population – voices from the highest levels of Mexican government to the very homes in which these languages are spoken in rural Mexico.1 May these voices help us understand more clearly the situation today for Mexico regarding bilingual education in a land so rich in diversity of culture and languages. After listening to these voices, it will be obvious how the literacy method I will describe below can be a significant part of a solution for the desperate need for increasing community level involvement in indigenous education.2 1. About bilingual educational issues, local and non-local voices Some voices at the Local level: Voice of a Tepehua3 bilingual schoolteacher assigned to translate textbooks for his people: When I gave them all the work I’d written in Tepehua, it didn’t have the mistakes that I now see in the book they returned to me. Whoever typed up my writing in Mexico City must have made those mistakes. Voice of local speakers of the same language: These textbooks have lots of mistakes in them. They are beautiful books and the pictures are nice, but the words are full of errors. Voice of a bilingual educator in another Tepehua language: Yes, we received the Tepehua textbooks, here they are on our shelves. -

Beside it a man shoots a bow and arrow. Other insect- like forms fly about. These hallucinatory images are traditional for the Huicholes, who used peyote to bring on visions. Originally a traditional art form, yarn paintings became popular as tourist art. This piece was purchased at Tlaquepaque, a town just outside of Guadalajara, in the 1970’s. The story on the back reads: Los Huicholes no conocían el maíz en tiempos antiguos. Una vez un niño se enteró de que había gente allende las montañas “que tienen algo que llaman maíz,” y fue en su busaca. En camino se encontró con un grupo de hombres que le dijeron que (h)iba a comprar maíz y el, confiando, les acompañó. Lo que no sabía es que esa gente eran en realidad hormigas (los insectos en esta ilustración). La Gente Hormiga que ro(b)e todo lo que encuentra. Al llegar la madrugada se despertó. Bajo un gran pino y descubrió que le habían roido (robado) toda la ropa, el cabello e inclusive las cejas, y que solamente le quedaban el arco y las flechas. Oyó que un pájaro se pasaba en un árbol, y le apuntó con una flecha, pues tenía hambre. El pájaro le reveló que era Tatey Kukurú Uimári, Nuestra Madre Paloma Muchacha, la Madre del Maíz. Le dijo que siguiera a su casa, donde le daría maíz. Translation: The Huichol people didn’t know about maize in ancient times. -

La histoquímica mostró la presencia de metabolitos es- enciales (flavonoides, taninos, entre otros) para la especie y me- diante análisis SEM-EDS se confirmó que los cristales están com- puestos por oxalato de calcio. El análisis fitoquímico permitió la identificación de mono y sesquiterpenos, triterpenos y esteroides, entre otros. TRIBES, CLANS AND FAMILIES The problem of the social structure at Palmyra has already been met by many authors who have focused their interest mainly to the study of the tribal organisation'. In dealing with this subject, it comes natural to attempt a distinction amongst the so-called tribes or family groups, for they are so well and widely attested. On the other hand, as shall be seen, it is not easy to define exactly what a tribe or a clan meant in terms of structure and size and which are the limits to take into account in trying to distinguish them. At the heart of Palmyrene social organisation we find not only individuals or families but tribes or groups of families, in any case groups linked by a common (true or presumed) ancestry. The Palmyrene language expresses the main gentilic grouping with phd2, for which the Greek corresponding word is ØuAi in the bilingual texts. The most common Palmyrene formula is: dynwpbd biiyx... 'who is from the tribe of', where sometimes the word phd is omitted. Usually, the term bny introduces the name of a tribe that either refers to a common ancestor or represents a guild as the Ben Komarê, lit. 'the Sons of the priest' and the Benê Zimrâ, 'the sons of the cantors' 3 , according to a well-established Semitic tradition of attaching the guilds' names to an ancestor, so that we have the corporations of pastoral nomads, musicians, smiths, etc. -

From the beginning the patronage accorded the enter prise by the public was very liberal, and it was not long until a removal was necessitated to EI Paso, Tex., in order to secure facilities for doing the increasing business. This removal also enabled the proprietor to pay the duties on the goods in bulk, thus obviating the annoyance previously experienced by cus tomer.s in passing small Jots through the custom-house. The cut on the second page of cover shows the elegant quarters now occupied, where visitors can see the largest stock in the world of the curi~us and beautiful goods described in the following catalogue. The numerous requests received from pe'rsons in all parts of the country for price lists have induced the proprietor to establish a Retail Mail Order Department, and this catalogue has been prepared for the accommodation ofsuch as desire to order by mail. To the thousands of tourists and others who have visited the Mexican Art and Curiosity Store in person the proprietor needs no introduction, but for the information of those to whom he is a stranger he respectfully refer& to the First National Bank of EI Paso, or to any of the Commercial Reo ports.
