Fellows serve yearlong assignments in the federal government and learn ﬁrst-hand about policymaking, bring valuable STEM expertise to address societal challenges, and enhance their careers. Each class of fellows represents a broad range of backgrounds, disciplines, and career stages. Fellows come from disciplines including social or behavioral sciences; medical or health sciences; biological, physical or earth sciences; and computational sciences or mathematics. In recent years, fellows have served in fellowship positions in all three branches of the federal government. You may wonder, “What is a fellowship?” A fellowship can be • a grant for a creative or research project • a scholarship for an academic qualification • an internship for professional development What makes a grant, scholarship, or internship a fellowship is the cohort of people chosen to develop their talents together with guidance from mentors, through group activities, and in support of a larger goal. This booklet lists the hundreds of Northwestern students and alumni who secured external funding during the 2019–20 academic year to create, research, study, and intern through fellow ships all over the country and around the globe. Information for Partner University Internal Nomination Processes 2021 Recruitment for international, Chinese Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Candidates Contents: Section 1: 2021 Application Qualifications Section 2: Partner University FAQs Updated Summer 2020 2021 Applicant Qualifications Application for the 2021 cohort of Yenching Scholars will be opened from August 15 to December 4, 2020. Candidates must submit all materials before 12:00 noon (Beijing time) on the deadline. Letters of recommendation must also be received by this deadline. Please note that we have highlighted in yellow a few updates introduced to the 2021 cohort recruitment; see below for more information. Eligibility • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in any field; currently enrolled degree program awarded no later than August 31 of the year in which they wish to enroll; • An outstanding academic record; • Strong interest in interdisciplinary study of China; • A record of extracurricular achievement, community engagement, social responsibility, and leadership potential; • English proficiency. We do not have a strict age cut-off for applicants, but to date, no person over the age of 28 has been admitted to the program. The average age of students entering the program is 23. Application Components • Yenching Academy online application (note that all students and alumni of Partner Universities are required to apply through their universities); • Personal statement (750 words or less); • Research proposal (maximum one page); • Curriculum vitae (maximum 2 pages); • Official transcript(s)1; • Diploma(s) or Certificate(s) of Enrollment1; • Two letters of recommendation: o Peking University will only accept recommendation letters written by full professors or associate professors (or equivalent titles).
