National Study Abroad Scholarship Programs

American-Scandinavian Foundation Fellowships & Grants Program During the past 100 years, over 4,000 fellowships and grants have been given to Americans and Scandinavians engaged in study, research or creative arts projects. The maximum award amounts are up to $23,000 for fellowships (year long) and up to $5,000 for research grants. Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program The Gilman International Scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad. The Program is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State. Over 2,900 scholarships of up to $5,000 will be awarded this academic year.

Boren Awards for International Study Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students who plan to study less- commonly taught languages in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. national security interests. If selected, you must commit to working for the Federal government for a minimum of one year. Maximum award amounts are $20,000 for a full academic year; $10,000 for a semester; and $8,000 for a summer program. Students spend eight to ten weeks abroad studying one of 15 critical languages. DAAD Scholarship Opportunities DAAD provides funding for both undergraduate and graduate studies and research in Germany. Programs can range from a three-week summer session for undergraduates to year long grants for graduate students. U.S. Citizenship is not required. Humboldt Foundation’s German Chancellor Fellowship Program Provides recent university graduates with the financial support to spend a year in Germany pursuing research-based, self-developed projects at host institutions. Projects should be of social significance; have a long-term, publicly visible impact; and be in fields such as politics, public administration, media, business, economics, society, or culture. Marshall Scholarship The Marshall Scholarship funds post baccalaureate study in a variety of disciplines in the United Kingdom. Marshall. Scholars are future leaders who will strengthen the relationship between the British and American peoples, their governments and their institutions. Graduating seniors and recent graduates can apply up to three years after receiving their first undergraduate degree. US citizenship is required. Mitchell Scholarship The George J. Mitchell Scholarship Program is a national, competitive scholarship sponsored by the US- Ireland Alliance. It is designed to connect the future leaders of America to the island of Ireland through one year of study at an accredited Irish university. The Mitchell Scholarship Program provides full tuition and housing; a monthly living stipend (currently $1250 USD) for up to one year (12 months) of post-graduate academic study in Ireland and one round-trip airline ticket between the United States and Ireland.

SALAM Study Abroad Fully funded intensive Arabic language scholarship program held at the Sultan Qaboos College for Teaching Arabic Language to Non-native Speakers in Manah, . Applicants must have completed four semesters of university-level Arabic coursework before embarking on the program. U.S. citizenship is required. ThinkSwiss Summer Scholarships The ThinkSwiss Summer Scholarships support U.S. undergraduate students to get research experience or to participate in a summer school course in Switzerland. Truman (Harry S.) Scholarship The Truman Scholarship is the premier graduate fellowship in the United States for those pursuing careers as public service leaders. Juniors who demonstrate promising academic potential, outstanding leadership, and a commitment to the public sector are eligible for the award. Winners will receive up to $30,000 for 2-3 years of graduate study. Browne Leadership Fellows Program The Browne Leadership Fellows Program is an interdisciplinary fellowship aimed at preparing students to be engaged civic leaders working for economic and social justice. Fellows will attend monthly 1- credit seminar (in January, February, March, and April) at which they will be mentored by local public leaders, learn theories of social work and community organizing, and begin to learn the skills needed for social change. The summer term will focus on community service and action projects. The culmination of the fellowship is a formal poster presentation both in the community and to the University. Students will receive a generous stipend in the amount of $3,000 for the summer term (12 weeks) as well as one credit for the spring term. At Pitt, the Asian Studies Center; Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies; and the European Studies Center offers FLAS Fellowships for both the full academic year as well as for the summer. Maximum award amounts for the academic year is $10,000 in tuition and a $5,000 stipend. The summer award amount is $5,000 in tuition and a $2,500 scholarship.

NYC: Scholars in Residence This 12-week, fully-funded residency program supports 2-4 Dietrich School undergraduates in New York City over the summer to conduct self-directed research using the city’s many public resources. In the fall term following the residency, undergraduates will register for course credit to continue and finalize their final research projects and present/perform/exhibit/stage their work at a public event with the University of Pittsburgh. Throughout the summer and fall terms, students will have academic support from staff, Faculty Mentors, and Archivists/Librarians who will provide training prior to their trip to New York as well as afterwards to ensure a positive and rewarding learning experience.
