  • Snake, Rattle, and Roll Transcript
1 Snake, Rattle, and Roll Transcript Tyler: This episode of Lost Highways is being released by History Colorado as many of us are staying home in an effort to keep our community safe during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. To those of you out there who are unable to stay home, whether it’s because you’re working to keep people safe, provide healthcare, or provide supplies, thank you. Underwriting: Lost Highways, from History Colorado, is made possible by the Sturm Family Foundation, proud supporters of the humanities and the power of storytelling, for more than twenty years. [Music] Tyler: In 1979, curator and historian Peggy Ford Waldo had just started working at the Greeley History Museum, when she stumbled upon a mysterious artifact, buried away in storage. Peggy Ford Waldo: And hanging in our very tiny collections storage area was a dress made of the skins of rattlesnakes and it was just protected with a dry cleaner's bag. Noel: A dress made of RATTLESNAKE SKINS. Naturally, Ford Waldo, who you might remember from some of our previous episodes about Dearfield and Native American Mascots, was curious. Peggy Ford Waldo: It looks like a flapper dress. And of course, a dress made of snake skins with the hem of the dress being all the rattles of these skins intact, would have been in for a great time. You know, let's shake, rattle and roll. Tyler: And it wasn’t just a dress. Along with it was an ENTIRE flapper outfit made of snake skins and rattles, including accessories. Peggy Ford Waldo: There was a pair of shoes that had been covered with rattlesnake skins and there was a headband with very large rattles glued all the way around it.

Pink Elephant Aimee Hall 1 Prologue Some days, I look across the city skyline and find the district where I grew up. When I was young, the United Happiness Project was just starting out and hadn’t yet seeped across the globe. The UHP scans at that point were only able to calculate IQ and skill sets, personality traits, and whether you had the “criminal” gene. Back in those days, you underwent your first scan when you were nine. I remember my first scan clearly. Like all the other kids, I was terrified that I would have that “criminal” predisposition, particularly considering that my father (from what I remembered of him before he left) was an aggressive person. But, thankfully, I wasn’t one of those kids. Those kids were taken away to special boarding schools, to be monitored and re-educated. My results merely determined that I was a smart kid; that my “empathy” skills were rich with neural activity; that I was highly introverted; and had reinforced neural signatures in physical coordination.

Photo by Richard Strauss, Smithsonian Institution Rhythm and Blues 53 Tell It Like It Is by Mark Puryear In 1964 The Dixie Cups®, a female vocal trio from New Orleans, crooned out a cheerful version of “Chapel of Love” and knocked the Beatles from their number one spot on the pop charts. A year later, the trio released “Iko Iko,” a song first released in 1954 by James “Sugar Boy” Crawford as “Jock-A-Mo,” whose lyrics recount the meeting of two groups of Mardi Gras Indians. Since then, this song has been cov- ered by artists from the Grateful Dead to Cyndi Lauper, and continues to move new generations with its infectious New Orleans rhythms. The career of The Dixie Cups, and their direct and indirect roles in carrying rhythm and blues (R&B) into mainstream consciousness, speaks to the enduring pow- er of this music to transcend region and musical category and become a representative sound of the country. Musical Crossroads by Dwandalyn Reece The National Museum of African American History of musical genres, highlighting musical innovations, and Culture (NMAAHC) was established by an act of significant time periods and events along with Congress in 2003 making it the nineteenth museum historic performances to capture the music’s impact of the Smithsonian Institution.
