Signature: ………………………………………………………………. 1 Abstract Through a study of the work of three important writers, this thesis engages with the traumatic memories of the second half of the twentieth century in Czechoslovakia in order to highlight the value of literature in widening critical understandings of the continuing legacy of this complex era, which was dominated by totalitarian regimes under the Communist governments which gained control after the upheaval of the Second World War. Whilst these years were not unilaterally traumatic, many lives were dramatically affected by border closures and by the experience of living under a regime that maintained control through methods including confiscation of property, surveillance, arbitrary imprisonment, show trials, and executions. Many of the stories of this era could not be published openly because of censorship, and the persecution of intellectuals led to a wave of emigration, during which a number of writers moved to France. Using theories of trauma, exile, illness, and of self and other, this thesis opens up a dialogue between the work of three writers who engage, albeit from very different perspectives, with this little-explored intersection between Czech and French. The first chapter explores Daniela Hodrová’s translated Prague trilogy as a first-hand witness to her nation’s dispossession and as a form of resistance to the deletion of memory. The second chapter considers the painful transgenerational legacy of the era as it plays out in the work of bilingual writer Jean-Gaspard Páleníček. Chapter Three considers the ways in which the Prague novels of established French author Sylvie Germain negotiate the fine line between an appropriation of the stories of the other and a moral responsibility to bear witness. By bringing these authors together for the first time and locating their work within French Studies, my work foregrounds the need for Western criticism to pay attention to other valuable voices who can contribute to our understandings of the traumatic experience that has shaped modern history. 2 Acknowledgements I would like to thank Dr Helen Vassallo for introducing me to so many of the critical concepts that have shaped this thesis, and for her inspiring guidance, patient encouragement, and meticulous attention to detail. VP Daniela Hodrová, Visite privée: Prague, trans. by Catherine Servant (Paris: Chêne, 1991). 7 Introduction Widening Understandings of a Traumatic Totalitarian Legacy Although Daniela Hodrová, Jean-Gaspard Páleníček, and Sylvie Germain occupy diverse writing positions, each engages with the stories and memories of the Communist era in Czechoslovakia and, in different ways, the work of each author forges a perhaps unexpected relationship between Czech and French.1 The sociohistorical context in question is a troubled and complex period of history which spanned a half-century, from the Czechoslovak Communist Party (Komunistická strana Českoslovesnska, or KSČ) coup of 1948 until the Velvet Revolution ended the regime in 1989. Having been occupied throughout the Second World War by Nazi forces, Czechoslovakia was assigned (along with other countries in the region of Central and Eastern Europe) to the Soviet Bloc at the Yalta Conference at the end of the Second World War, and for the next four decades was subjugated to a regime of Soviet- led totalitarian law. Borders were closed, routes of communication with the West were shut down, and the all-powerful Party maintained control over almost every aspect of political and domestic life by means of a system of intrusive surveillance and punitive measures, including the show trials, imprisonments, 1 Note that I use ‘Czechoslovakia’ when referring to the period between 1918 (which saw the political formation of the First Czechoslovak Republic (První Československá Republika) after the collapse of Austro-Hungary during the First World War) and 1991, when the country split into two independent republics, Czech and Slovak, two years after the end of the Communist regime. Rebecca McFadden 2 Abstract Within the framework of the sociology of theatre, this thesis explores the current performance-making landscape of Prague, mapping the emergence of the nové divadlo (new theatre) movement since 2000. An examination of the historical development of Czech theatre foregrounds the discussion of contemporary practice, charting its changing social-political role in domestic and international contexts. Theatre’s significance in forging an ethnolinguistically defined national consciousness is considered as a legacy that continues to impact the field. Theatrical values originating in the nineteenth-century national revival are traced through the interwar avant-garde, dissident small theatre movement of the 1960s and auteur’s theatre of the 1970s and 1980s. The Velvet Revolution of 1989 and theatre artists’ contributions to the defeat of communism are considered as catalysing a period of self-reflexivity, as theatres grappled with new logistical infrastructures and faced a crisis of purpose both dramaturgical and social in scope. These changes are framed by discussion of the divergent visions of the country’s future posited by Václav Havel and Václav Klaus throughout the 1990s, as well as tensions surrounding European Union ascension and other globalizing processes. A close examination of the nové divadlo infrastructure that has arisen in the past twenty years identifies the strategies by which this faction of the field has forged a third theatre- making space, distinct from either the repertory system or the pre-revolution avant-garde.

Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 3 Abstract This thesis explores the political dimensions of representing history through literature, film, and television, offering a wide-ranging analysis of the cultural responses to the period of state socialism in the Czech Republic after the collapse of the former Eastern Bloc. Unlike in Germany, where the memory of the period from the end of the Second World War to the fall of the Berlin Wall has largely been discussed in terms of nostalgia, in the Czech case there is little evidence for nostalgia for either the utopian impulse of the socialist project or its everyday aspects. This research thus challenges nostalgia as one of the main paradigms for the remembrance of the socialist period in the former Eastern Bloc and demonstrates that in the Czech context, an aesthetic fascination with the past is not at odds with, but in fact reinforces an anti-communist rejection of the politics of socialism. My contention is that the object of remembrance in cultural production in the Czech Republic is not the period of state socialism itself, but rather a narrative of its overcoming through resistance and heroism. The retrospective handling of the past through cultural texts and practices hinges on a narrative of progress from the period of socialism to liberal democracy, which ultimately serves to legitimate the present political order.

    INTRODUCTION Returning to the Past 8 On a tree-lined street in Prague’s upmarket district of Vinohrady, Café Kaaba invites customers to drink a coffee in an interior decorated in ‘Brussels Style’, the late 1950s and early 1960s wave of design that followed the success of the Czechoslovak Pavilion at the World’s Fair in Brussels in 1958. Before enter- ing, Kaaba proudly informs customers of its attitude towards the state social- ist past on its door.1 On a sticker with a crossed-out red circle, where one would often find the symbol of a dog to indicate that pets are not welcome, Kaaba features a crossed-out hammer and sickle. A second sticker displays crossed-out cherries, the symbol of the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia (KSČM), in a clear message that communists are not allowed inside (Figure 0.1). The socialist-era design on show in the café is to be enjoyed not for the political era that gave rise to it, but as one of the many available styles that the free market offers. Though the interior of the café is pleasant, the disclaimer on the door suggests that this should not stimulate nostalgia for how things were in the past. Instead, it turns to an alternative line of Czech history, which sees a continuity of national culture irrespective of political regimes. The message implies a hypothetical projection of the achievements of socialism – its design – without its politics: a state socialism without communists. Such a paradoxical attitude is emblematic of the Czech relationship to state socialism evident in many post-1989 cultural representations of the past and also holds a firm place in public discourse, conducted in the media by politicians, journalists and other commentators, as well as both state and "VELVET RETRO: Postsocialist Nostalgia and the Politics of Heroism in Czech Popular Culture" by Veronika Pehe.

Celkově lze překládanou českou literaturu rozdělit do několika skupin na základě časové periodizace. Vytvořili jsme pro tyto účely velmi hrubou periodizaci umožňu- jící alespoň rámcově uchopit korpus překládané produkce, které se dostalo ze strany MK ČR podpory. První je skupina, do níž byly zařazovány tituly literatury staré a literatury 19. sto- letí; druhá skupina je vymezena obdobím první republiky (včetně válečného období 1939–1945) a padesátými lety, kdy vrcholil tlak totalitní komunistické moci; třetí skupinu tvoří díla, která vznikala v letech šedesátých až osmdesátých (včetně litera- tury exilové a samizdatové); a do poslední, čtvrté skupiny jsou zařazena díla, která vycházela od roku 1989 do současnosti. „Napříč“ touto periodizací pak prochází (rovněž hrubé) dělení teritoriální: Západ – Východ – zámoří.

Class Course description: The idea of the course is not to bring a full and detailed picture Description of the modern and contemporary Central and East European literature, but rather to take advantage of the unique occasion and offer students a more focused view. Examining Czech literary history as a specific example of the European history of national, cultural and political emancipation plans to guide “newcomers” along the most important cultural streams influencing the face of Czech literature in the 19th and 20th century. The larger cultural context includes the political role of art and literature in Czech history, language, religion, social and national currents and crosscurrents, as well as its Central and East European dimension.
