Later in the early 1980s I worked for an ex member of German electronic band Tangerine Dream and even more dubious acts before working as Assistant Manager for Bridgewater Arts Centre, the oldest art centre in the UK where I had a particular interest in the folk, rock, blues and jazz artists performing there and where I held a number of responsibilities including venue management and overseeing the running of varied range of shows and events.

For over 27 years I was a Production, Tour, Site and Stage Manager trading under the name “SouthWestern Management”, I have been at the forefront of health and safety in the industry since 1993 and at the very first PSA conference I mentioned “risk assessments” and was promptly told there was no such thing, such was the knowledge of the industry at that time! Since 2003 I have been a self-employed health and safety consultant in the live music and events industry trading under the name of “Stagesafe”, I no longer carry out production, tour or stage management duties as there would create a conflict of interest with my health and safety duties. My business “Stagesafe”, provides health and safety consultancy services, co-ordination of Premises License applications, event safety management services and safety training within the live music and event industry.

For twelve years I was a member of the Production Services Association Council of Management and represented the PSA on the British Standards Institute Committee developing the Code of Practice for Event Stewarding and Crowd Safety Services. I have represented the PSA on a committee working on the development of a Foundation Degree Course in Crowd Safety Management at Buckingham and Chilterns University College (now Bucks New University) and to the UK Crowd Management Association. Again, with a team from the PSA, I was enrolled as a student at Bucks New University on the first Foundation Degree Course in Crowd and Safety Management that also included a Certificate in Higher Education Leaning but sadly work commitments dictated that I had to curtail the course before gaining the qualification.

I have been heavily involved in the PSA training incentives; this has included the development of industry BTEC qualifications (including lecturing at Loughborough Collage where much of the development work was carried out) and I was responsible for the initial introduction (and most of the writing) of an industry wide safety passport scheme in conjunction with SPA (Safety Pass Alliance) and the Production Services Association, it is proposed that this will become the European standard for the European Live Music Forum as well as the UK standard that is now being adopted by many major venues, I am a Licensed Trainer for the Safety Passport Scheme.

I am a qualified trainer in Fire Safety Awareness and Fire Warden Training I have also acted as an advisor for Yurope, the European Festival Promoters Association and to the Scandinavian Festivals Association.

At present, Health and safety consultancy clients include a wide range of manufactures and service companies within the industry and the provision of safety services to numerous events, I also provide coordination License applications under the 2003 Licensing Act and have never been turned down on a License application.

For the Millennium period I was Health and Safety consultant for Bristol City Councils events in the centre of Bristol, this event attracted over 100,000 people with no major incidents of any kind.

In 2004 I was engaged as Safety Officer for Trafalgar 200, a two day event that was run in June 2005 by the Royal Navy this event attracted almost one and a quarter of a million visitors in the presence of HRH The Queen, the Royal Family and numerous heads of state both from the UK and Worldwide.

This event included the largest firework display ever held in the UK, aerial displays with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, the French aerobatic display team, the Red Arrows and Royal Navy helicopter displays, an International Drum Head Ceremony, an International Fleet Review with ships from forty six nations and a Son Et Laminar re-enacting the Battle of Trafalgar on the Solent with a fleet of Tall Ships from around the world.

I have also been involved with in parachute displays by the Red Devils and other display teams.

My work on T200 involved liaison with Local Authority Officers including Environmental Health, Emergency Planning, Traffic Management and Health and Safety in addition to the Police, Fire, Ambulance, NHS, Special Branch, Royal Protection and high ranking officers from all the armed services (including the Admiral of the Fleet and First Sea Lord, Sir Alan West), the Queens Harbour Master, HM Coastguard, Special Forces and Life Guards. I hold high level security and CRB clearance.

I was a contributor to the second edition of the HSE Event Safety Guide (Guide to health, safety and welfare at music and similar events) and to the new edition that has now been published by the Event Industry Forum. I regularly represented the PSA at various meetings, conferences and seminars including the UK Crowd Management Association annual conference.

I have been a speaker at seminars run by The Professional Lighting and Sound Association, The Production Services Association, The Scandinavian Festival Promoters Association (in Denmark) and Hultsfred Festival (in Sweden).

In 1997 the PSA published my first book “An Introduction to Health and Safety Management in the Live Music Industry”. My second book is a follow up to the first and has the title of “Health and Safety Management in the Live Music and Events Industry” and was published in October 2004 by Entertainment Technology Press (www.etbooks.co.uk), a fully revised and expanded Second Edition was published in May 2009 and a third edition is being worked on.

I have also had material published by the Institute of Leisure and Amenity Management as well as various trade publications including “Total Production”, “Live!”, “Lighting and Sound International”, “Audience”, “Event Organiser”, “The Main Event” and “Access All Areas” magazines.

On behalf of the PSA, I produced a contract and sample terms and conditions for use by the self- employed within our industry and more recently (and sometimes in conjunction with fellow PSA Council members) various articles on Insurance, PAYE, Tax, self-employment and health and safety for people working within the live music and events industry.

I have held a First-Aid at Work certificate for 20 years, I am a Member of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management, a Graduate Member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, an Associate Member of the Institute of Accident Investigators and I am trained and qualified in most of the access techniques used for work at height within the industry, hold BTEC qualifications as a pyrotechnic and fireworks firer and even hold a food hygiene certificate.

As a Tour/Stage and Production Manager I have over twenty-seven years experience within the industry, mainly with major festivals including Reading and Glastonbury in addition to Worldwide touring.

At Glastonbury Festival I was Production Manager for the two main stages for many years. My role at Glastonbury Festival also involved the coordination of all on site BBC radio and television operations and the specification and booking of all staging, PA, lighting, power and pit barriers for all stages on the site, this obviously requires a high level of technical knowledge.

Prior to the BBC involvement with Glastonbury I worked with Channel 4 and most of the UK independent TV production companies in a similar role. I have produced many major outdoor classical music concerts and have worked with most of the leading orchestras and soloists from the UK and . As a Tour, Stage and Production Manager I have toured all of Europe, Scandinavia and the USA many times over with a wide range of artists and venues ranging from clubs, theatres, concert halls, arenas, stadiums and festivals.

The range of musical events I have been involved with includes World music, dance (including a long period with the Megadog organisation that included the largest tour of live dance music acts in the US that won second place in the Dance Music Event of the Year category at the 1998 Live Awards and the largest "rave" in the UK), reggae (I also produced the largest reggae festival ever held in Europe), Nottinghill and St Paul’s Carnivals folk, jazz, blues, R&B, rock, New Age, electronic, gospel, calypso, orchestras, choir’s and military bands (including VJ Day at Castle in the presence of HRH Prince Charles).

As one would expect, I have close contacts with all major industry suppliers and organisations. The range of clients I have worked for includes major international artists, management companies, record companies, the National Trust, English Heritage, local authorities, production companies and major promoters,

I hold qualifications in most of the core skills required for touring personnel including almost all items of plant and methods for work at height that are employed by the music and event industries.

At the Total Production International Awards held In January 2005 I was awarded the “Unsung Hero Award”. This award has now become the John Peel Memorial Award and was given in recognition of my “behind the scenes work” in health and safety and with the PSA for the general good and well being of the event and live music production industry.

In 2005 I was invited to become involved with the production of an fan club convention concert with the 70s psychedelic band “Gong”, this led to me going back to my roots and becoming co- promoter of a very successful three day event in 2006 at ’s “Melkweg” venue that included all the original members of Gong as well as splinter groups such as the Steve Hillage Band and Crystal Machine with Tim Blake.

In January 2010 I was invited to assist MUTA (the trade association for the marquee hire industry) to develop a Safety Passport scheme for their industry, the writing of the course and the development of a Power Point presentation has been completed together with the setting of course questions etc. I am one of two persons in the UK who now delivers the course to MUTA members.

In August 2010 I was contracted by the Organising Committee of the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India to provide health and safety consultancy services to the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Commonwealth Games, this involved spending almost three months in Delhi working with the Organising Committee (OC), the Indian production management company (Wiz Craft) and a team of international consultants and contractors as well as local contractors and a cast of 7,000, there were no major incidents, accidents or mishaps within our area of operation.

Other clients include the Spandau Ballet reunion tour, the George Michael Australian Tour, Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance European Tour, the Jamiroquai European Tour, the George Michael World Tour (all 15,000 + capacity arena shows for all these acts) and The Stranglers as well as numerous production, staging, audio, lighting, video, local crew, generator and power distribution and other service companies within the event industry.

I believe that to be effective in my role and to continue my professional development that it is essential to maintain close contact and to be conversant with all aspects, new developments and trends within the production, event stewarding and health and safety industries.

To this end I regular read a great number of event, music industry and health and safety trade publications, attend various events, seminars, trade shows and conferences and carry out research on the internet, this is all added to my IOSH continued professional development programme.

In July 2013 I attended PALME Asia trade show in Singapore as a guest speaker at their health and safety conference.

PLAME is a trade show for lighting, audio, AV etc for the entertainment industry and is similar to the PLASA show in the UK. My presentation was extremely well received and I suspect will lead to further work in this area.

I am current undergoing the IOSH IPD scheme to become a Chartered Member of IOSH.
