Later in the early 1980s I worked for an ex member of German electronic band Tangerine Dream and even more dubious acts before working as Assistant Manager for Bridgewater Arts Centre, the oldest art centre in the UK where I had a particular interest in the folk, rock, blues and jazz artists performing there and where I held a number of responsibilities including venue management and overseeing the running of varied range of shows and events. For over 27 years I was a Production, Tour, Site and Stage Manager trading under the name “SouthWestern Management”, I have been at the forefront of health and safety in the industry since 1993 and at the very first PSA conference I mentioned “risk assessments” and was promptly told there was no such thing, such was the knowledge of the industry at that time! Since 2003 I have been a self-employed health and safety consultant in the live music and events industry trading under the name of “Stagesafe”, I no longer carry out production, tour or stage management duties as there would create a conflict of interest with my health and safety duties. My business “Stagesafe”, provides health and safety consultancy services, co-ordination of Premises License applications, event safety management services and safety training within the live music and event industry. For twelve years I was a member of the Production Services Association Council of Management and represented the PSA on the British Standards Institute Committee developing the Code of Practice for Event Stewarding and Crowd Safety Services. I have represented the PSA on a committee working on the development of a Foundation Degree Course in Crowd Safety Management at Buckingham and Chilterns University College (now Bucks New University) and to the UK Crowd Management Association. Again, with a team from the PSA, I was enrolled as a student at Bucks New University on the first Foundation Degree Course in Crowd and Safety Management that also included a Certificate in Higher Education Leaning but sadly work commitments dictated that I had to curtail the course before gaining the qualification. I have been heavily involved in the PSA training incentives; this has included the development of industry BTEC qualifications (including lecturing at Loughborough Collage where much of the development work was carried out) and I was responsible for the initial introduction (and most of the writing) of an industry wide safety passport scheme in conjunction with SPA (Safety Pass Alliance) and the Production Services Association, it is proposed that this will become the European standard for the European Live Music Forum as well as the UK standard that is now being adopted by many major venues, I am a Licensed Trainer for the Safety Passport Scheme. I am a qualified trainer in Fire Safety Awareness and Fire Warden Training I have also acted as an advisor for Yurope, the European Festival Promoters Association and to the Scandinavian Festivals Association. At present, Health and safety consultancy clients include a wide range of manufactures and service companies within the industry and the provision of safety services to numerous events, I also provide coordination License applications under the 2003 Licensing Act and have never been turned down on a License application. For the Millennium period I was Health and Safety consultant for Bristol City Councils events in the centre of Bristol, this event attracted over 100,000 people with no major incidents of any kind. In 2004 I was engaged as Safety Officer for Trafalgar 200, a two day event that was run in June 2005 by the Royal Navy this event attracted almost one and a quarter of a million visitors in the presence of HRH The Queen, the Royal Family and numerous heads of state both from the UK and Worldwide. This event included the largest firework display ever held in the UK, aerial displays with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, the French aerobatic display team, the Red Arrows and Royal Navy helicopter displays, an International Drum Head Ceremony, an International Fleet Review with ships from forty six nations and a Son Et Laminar re-enacting the Battle of Trafalgar on the Solent with a fleet of Tall Ships from around the world. I have also been involved with in parachute displays by the Red Devils and other display teams. My work on T200 involved liaison with Local Authority Officers including Environmental Health, Emergency Planning, Traffic Management and Health and Safety in addition to the Police, Fire, Ambulance, NHS, Special Branch, Royal Protection and high ranking officers from all the armed services (including the Admiral of the Fleet and First Sea Lord, Sir Alan West), the Queens Harbour Master, HM Coastguard, Special Forces and Life Guards. I hold high level security and CRB clearance. I was a contributor to the second edition of the HSE Event Safety Guide (Guide to health, safety and welfare at music and similar events) and to the new edition that has now been published by the Event Industry Forum. I regularly represented the PSA at various meetings, conferences and seminars including the UK Crowd Management Association annual conference. I have been a speaker at seminars run by The Professional Lighting and Sound Association, The Production Services Association, The Scandinavian Festival Promoters Association (in Denmark) and Hultsfred
