The ravines at Olduvai offered unparalleled access to ancient strata, but field work was no picnic in the park. Water was often scarce. Leakey and his team had to learn to share Olduvai with all of the wild animals that lived there, lions included. -

Evolution serves as a foundation to many biological concepts by tying together the different tenants of biology, like ecology, anatomy, genetics, zoology, and taxonomy. It is for this reason that evolution plays a prominent role in the state and national standards and deserves thorough coverage in a classroom. A prime example of evolution can be seen in our own ancestral history, and this unit provides students with an excellent opportunity to consider the multiple lines of evidence that support hominid evolution. By allowing students the chance to uncover the supporting evidence for evolution themselves, they discover the ways the theory of evolution is supported by multiple sources. It is our hope that the opportunity to handle our ancestors’ bone casts and examine real molecular data, in an inquiry based environment, will pique the interest of students, ultimately leading them to conclude that the evidence they have gathered thoroughly supports the theory of evolution. -

This review details both what is firmly understood (first echelon issues) and what is contentious concerning humanSAMPLE evolution. Most of the coCHAPTERSntention actually concerns the details (second echelon issues) of human evolution rather than the fundamental issues. For example, both anatomical and molecular evidence on living (extant) hominoids (apes and humans) suggests the close relationship of African great apes and humans (hominins). That relationship is demonstrated by the existing hominoid fossil record, including that of early hominins. -

It was revealed that Kenyapithecus and Proconsul exhibit a very similar morphology of the dis tal region of the sigmoid notch; including the absence of a median keel and a downward sloped coronoid process. In addition, the proxilnal region of the sigmoid notch is curved more acutely relative to the distal region in Proconsul. This morphological complex is unique and not found in the examined living primates. The benefits of 3-D morphometries are discussed. Lemke: Identity of Hominid Skulls Identity of Newly Found, Fully Intact Hominid Skulls from Ethiopia by Chris Lemke (Honors Biology 1151) ABSTRACT ecently, three fully intact hominid skulls have been found in the Afar Region of Ethiopia. Objectives were to date the skulls using Uranium-235, and to identify each of the skulls. RUranium-235 dating indicated skulls A and B to be 2.9 million years old, and skull C to be 1.7 million years old. Each skull was properly identified using existing fossil data. The two oldest skulls were found to be Australopithecus afarensis, and A. africanus. The younger skull was identified as Homo habilis. A discrepancy was found in the measured cranial capacity data against existing data. Due to condition of the newly found fossils, the most likely explanation for the discrepancy is inaccuracy of existing fossil data due to incomplete and fragmented specimens, or that the skulls in question were representative of a juvenile hominid. -

Chapter 5 The Correlated History of Social Organization, Morality, and Religion David C. Lahti Abstract Morality and religion have evolutionary and cultural roots in the social behavior of our ancestors . Fundamental precursors and major features of morality and religion appear to have changed gradually in concert with social transitions in our history. These correlated changes involve trends toward increased breadth and complexity of social interaction, leading to a stepwise extension of the scope of human sympathies to more inclusive social categories, and eventually the universal- ization of moral and religious concepts, practices, and explanations. These changes can be integrated provisionally into an eight-stage model of human social history, beginning with nepotism and dominance that are characteristic of many social mam- mals, and culminating in the intellectual ability and (sometimes) social freedom of modern human individuals to examine moral and religious conventions, to modify or reject them, and even to propose new ones. 5.1 Introduction In the last 2 million years, several unique traits have evolved in the human lineage: extraordinary intelligence, an unprecedented capacity for cultural transmission of ideas, morality, and religion. These traits are unlikely to have arisen by coincidence in the same species over the same period of time. In fact, evolutionary biologists have recognized important functional relationships between these traits (Alexander 1979). If a consensus is emerging as to the evolution of these features of mod- ern humans, perhaps it can be encapsulated as follows: human intelligence evolved as a social tool, facilitating cooperation within groups in order to more effectively compete between groups; the ensuing intellectual arms race selected for rapid cul- tural innovation and transmission of ideas; cooperative norms within social groups were formalized into the institution of morality; and religion grew out of obedience D.C. -

PANTE Dissertation Director: Professor Robert Blumenschine This dissertation represents the first taphonomically‐informed assessment of the feeding behavior of Homo erectus. Until now studies of the feeding behavior of Early Stone Age hominins based on the assemblage‐wide proportions of tooth, cut, and percussion marks have focused on Oldowan sites attributed to Homo habilis leaving assessments of the subsistence capabilities of Homo erectus to inference. This trend is the direct result of the river/channel depositional settings for most sites that are attributed to Homo erectus and the lack of a theoretically‐grounded basis for interpreting fossil assemblages from such sites. Using a flume I have generated the first experimental sample designed to interpret bone assemblages that were modified by hominins and carnivores and subsequently disturbed by flowing water. Results show that the transportability of bone fragments is inversely related to the size of bone fragments as measured by length, iii width, cortical thickness, and indirectly by the size group of the carcass from which the fragments were generated. -

Meave Leakey
Meave Leakey Paleoanthropologist Paleontologist and zoologist Meave Leakey is a prominent member of the famed Leakey family of paleoanthropologists who have dominated their field for over a century. Her life-long search for clues about our past has led her to every corner of the remote, windswept semi-deserts of Kenya’s Lake Turkana Basin. In 2013, the National Academy of Science elected her a Foreign Associate. Over the last four decades, the Koobi Fora Research Project, which she co-directs with her eldest daughter Louise, has unearthed much of the evidence behind our current understanding of our past. Dr. Leakey is focused on the origins of our own genus, Homo, and the emergence of Homo erectus, the first human ancestor to move out of Africa. Her research focuses on the sites around Lake Turkana, which are between 8 and 3 million years old. In 1999, 2000, and again in 2007 the project made sensational new discoveries of early Homo that indicate Ausralopithecus afarensis (also known as the skeleton named “Lucy”) might not be the only species from which the human race descended. National Geographic remarked that Dr. Leakey's findings “challenge the straight-line story of human evolution.” The announcement of these discoveries was featured in Nature and The New York Times. In August 2012 Dr. Leakey and Louise announced the discovery of 3 new fossils that indicate there were more extinct human species than previously thought. Dr. Leakey is a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence in recognition of the 50-year relationship between “the National Geographic Society and the Leakey family dynasty of pioneering fossil hunters.” She is also a Research Professor at Stony Brook University and was the head of the division of paleontology at the National Museums of Kenya for over 30 years. -
