#214 ROY A. WILLIAMSON: USS PYRO Steven Haller (SH): My name is Steven Haller and we're at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel in Honolulu, Hawaii. It's December 5, 1991, at about 3:30 PM. And I have the pleasure to be speaking with Mr. Roy A. Williamson today. We're doing this tape as a part of the USS ARIZONA Memorial and National Park Services' oral history program, in cooperation with KHET-TV, Honolulu. Mr. Williamson was on the ammunition ship, PYRO, at the time of the attack. He was twenty-five years of age and was a Carpenter's Mate, First Class. So I want to thank you very much for joining us and taking the time to share your memories. Let's see, how did you get in the Navy? Roy A. Williamson (RW): Back during the depression, whenever there was no -- there was jobs, but no money, and I saw a sign on the corner, says, "Come join the Navy and see the world," and I went in and, and they were only taking a couple of 'em a month from Oklahoma. And I went out and passed the examination, and they told me that if you don't get called within a month or within six months, then come back and take it over again to keep on the list. And yet I was called within six months, before the six months was up, and went into the service and spent four years in the Navy, and then got out and they told me that since the war was like it was, or would be coming up probably, that I was draft age and if I didn't ship over, they would draft me. -

Documentarian Growing up in Birmingham, Alabama, in the 1970s and ’80s, Michele Forman ’93 loved visual art and reading. At Harvard, she chose a double concentration in visual and environmental studies and English, and felt particularly drawn to docu- mentary filmmaking, which “revolves around talk- ing to people and being curious about their lives.” As a senior, she took a screenwriting seminar from Spike Lee, who returned a draft with a “note in the margin that this could be a movie,” and offered her a summer internship. After graduation, she worked in script development for his company in Brook- lyn, looking for new projects to executive produce. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. ........................................ 2 Abstract The thesis offers a revised institutional history of US cable network Home Box Office that expands on its under-examined identity as a monthly subscriber service from 1972 to 1994. This is used to better explain extensive discussions of HBO‟s rebranding from 1995 to 2007 around high-quality original content and experimentation with new media platforms. The first half of the thesis particularly expands on HBO‟s origins and early identity as part of publisher Time Inc. from 1972 to 1988, before examining how this affected the network‟s programming strategies as part of global conglomerate Time Warner from 1989 to 1994. Within this, evidence of ongoing processes for aggregating subscribers, or packaging multiple entertainment attractions around stable production cycles, are identified as defining HBO‟s promotion of general monthly value over rivals. Arguing that these specific exhibition and production strategies are glossed over in existing HBO scholarship as a result of an over-valuing of post-1995 examples of „quality‟ television, their ongoing importance to the network‟s contemporary management of its brand across media platforms is mapped over distinctions from rivals to 2007. -

Accidents, chance, fate and the elusive quest to make sense out of tragedy underpin director Jennifer Baichwal’s (Manufactured Landscapes) captivating new work, an elegant cinematic meditation on the metaphysical effects of being struck by lightning. To explore these profound questions, Baichwal sought out riveting personal stories from around the world—from a former CIA assassin and a French storm chas- er, to writer Paul Auster and improvisational musician Fred Frith. The philosophical anchor of the film, Auster was caught in a terrifying and deadly storm as a teenager, and it has deeply affected both his life and art: “It opened up a whole realm of speculation that I’ve continued to live with ever since.” In his doctor brother’s laboratory, Frith experiments with his guitar to demonstrate the ubiquity of electricity in our bodies and the universe. Visually dazzling and aurally seductive, Act of God singularly captures the harsh beauty of the skies and the lives of those who have been forever touched by their fury. DIRECTOR’S NOTES I studied philosophy and theology before turning to documentary and, in some ways, the questions I was drawn to then are the ones I still grapple with now, although in a different context. Two of these, which specifically inform this film, are the relationship between meaning and randomness and the classical problem of evil. -
