Rajapaksha1, C. de Alwis1 1Butterfly Conservation Society of Sri Lanka, 762/A, Yatihena, Malwana, Sri Lanka 2 E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Larval food plants (LFPs) of Sri Lankan butterflies are poorly documented in the historical literature and there is a great need to identify LFPs in conservation perspectives. Therefore, the current study was designed and carried out during the past decade. A list of LFPs for 207 butterfly species (Super family Papilionoidea) of Sri Lanka is presented based on local studies and includes 785 plant-butterfly combinations and 480 plant species. Many of these combinations are reported for the first time in Sri Lanka. The impact of introducing new plants on the dynamics of abundance and distribution of butterflies, the possibility of butterflies being pests on crops, and observations of LFPs of rare butterfly species, are discussed. This information is crucial for the conservation management of the butterfly fauna in Sri Lanka. Key words: conservation, crops, larval food plants (LFPs), pests, plant-butterfly combination. L D evyatkin received 14.XI.1999 Summary: Data on the Hesperiidae fauna of southern Vietnam are summarized, a total of 22 species being added to those previously known from the area. The taxonomic status of sev eral taxa listed by other authors is corrected. Apart from the initial general lists of Vitalis de Salvaza (1919) and M etaye (1957), the hesperiid fauna of South Vietnam was studied more or less profoundly only by Inoue & Kawazoe (1964- 1970), who listed in a series of papers a total of 64 species. However, since these papers were written in taxonomic order and remained unfinished, they did not cover a great deal of genera in the subfamily Hesperiinae. The area treated by these authors as "South Vietnam" was much wider than the traditional "Cocin-China", stretching as far north as to Banmethuot (Buon Ma Thuot) (Dac Lac Province) and thus covering in fact the southern part of Annam, which has been traditionally regarded as Central Vietnam. In view of these studies, we did not take into consideration the southernmost part of Annam (south of Gia Lai Province) in our paper on North and Central Vietnam (D evyatkin & M onas - tyrskii, 1999), this area being dealt with in the present paper together with Cochin-China itself. The Proposed Action Plan for the Conservation of Butterflies in Hong Kong
For Discussion on NCSC Paper 3/10 29 April 2010 Advisory Council on the Environment Nature Conservation Subcommittee The Proposed Action Plan for the Conservation of Butterflies in Hong Kong Purpose This paper briefs Members on the proposed action plan for the conservation of butterflies in Hong Kong. Background 2. Butterflies belong to the order of Lepidoptera, which is derived from the Greek words lepidos and pteron, meaning scale and wing respectively. Members of this order have wings covered with scales. There are approximately 15,000 butterfly species in the world. Butterflies go through a life cycle of complete metamorphosis, i.e. egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa and adult. The adult has one pair of well-developed compound eyes and a siphoning mouthpart. The outer maxilla is specialised into a long rostrum that can roll up or extend to adapt to a feeding habit of sipping nectar at the bottom of floral tubes. 3. Butterflies can be used as indicators of habitat quality because they are (a) widespread, conspicuous, day-flying; (b) reasonably diverse for complete assessment and taxonomic identification; and (c) relatively sensitive to environmental changes because of their specific ecological requirements and short life cycles. 4. With a view to establishing a more comprehensive territory-wide ecological database for Hong Kong, the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) initiated a survey programme on butterflies in 2002. The main objectives of the programme were to undertake a systematic survey of butterflies in Hong Kong and to advance understanding of the needs for butterfly conservation here. The survey 1 programme is geographically comprehensive by covering the major sections of the Hong Kong land area, but excluding areas which are expected to be of negligible interest to butterflies, such as the highly urbanized and/or disturbed areas and barren sites. -
Butterflies of India – Annotated Checklist
1 *Hello friends, When I was looking for a good checklist of the butterflies of the Indian region a few months ago, I had to conclude that no such dependable modern list existed. The last comprehensive list was still the one in Evans (1932), which included the whole Indian region and Burma. I then decided to make such a list myself, with the same geographical coverage. I started, of course, from the great Evans, then incorporating his revisions of the Hesperiidae and the Arhopala group of Lycaenidae, then Talbot for the Papilionidae, Pieridae, Danainae, Satyrinae, Amathusiinae, and Acraeinae, and then Cantlie for the Lycaenidae other than the Arhopala group. Then several later revisions were consulted and comparisons were made with several modern lists. Sequence, at least among genera, was largely based on Varshney (2010), though for families I prefer the sequence Hesperiidae-Papilionidae-Pieridae-Lycaenidae- Nymphalidae. In the list, I have retained synonyms and full reference to Evans, since I have seen that many people still refer to that publication; this would then also apply to Wynter-Blyth's book, which basically used the same nomenclature as Evans. The list I have made is in Word, and contains 160 pages. If anyone wants a copy of it, please let me know, and I will be glad to send it to you.
