E-mail: Abstract: Quantification of butterfly diversity and species richness is of prime importance for evaluating the status of protected areas. Permanent line transect counts were used to record species richness and abundance of butterfly communities of different habitat types in Trishna wildlife sanctuary. A total of 1005 individuals representing 59 species in 48 genera belonging to five families were recorded in the present study. Of these, 23 species belonged to the family Nymphalidae and accounted for 38.98% of the total species and 45.20% of the total number of individuals. Mature secondary mixed moist deciduous forest showed the maximum diversity and species richness, while exotic grassland showed minimum diversity and species richness. Out of 59 species, 31 are new records for Tripura state, while 21 are unique species and nine are listed in the threatened category. This study revealed that mature secondary forests are more important for butterfly communities, while exotic grasslands have a negative impact on species composition. Annex 9A Ecology – Literature Review LITERATURE REVIEW INTRODUCTION A literature review was conducted to review the baseline ecological characters of the Assessment Area, identify habitat resources and species of potential conservation importance, and identify information gaps to determine whether field surveys are required to provide sufficient information for the Ecological Impact Assessment. This Annex presents the findings of this literature review. LEGISLATIVE REQUIREMENTS AND EVALUATION CRITERIA 9A.1.2.1 Marine Parks Ordinance (Cap. 476) and its Subsidiary Legislation The Marine Parks Ordinance (Cap. 476) provides for the designation, control and management of marine parks and marine reserves. It also stipulates the Director of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation as the Country and Marine Parks Authority which is advised by the Country and Marine Parks Board. The Marine Parks and Marine Reserves Regulation was enacted in July 1996 to provide for the prohibition and control of certain activities in marine parks or marine reserves. 9A.1.2.2 Wild Animals Protection Ordinance (Cap. 170) Under the Wild Animals Protection Ordinance (Cap. 170), designated wild animals are protected from being hunted, whilst their nests and eggs are protected from destruction and removal. All birds and most mammals including all cetaceans are protected under this Ordinance, as well as certain reptiles (including all sea turtles), amphibians and invertebrates. A new subspecies, Pyroneura callineura natalia subspec. nov. is described and illustrated. Taxonomic notes on certain species are presented. Since the previous publication summarizing the knowledge of the Hesperiidae in the southern part of Vietnam (Devyatkin & M onastyrskii , 2000), several further localities have been visited by research expeditions and individual collectors. The annotated list below is based predominantly on the material collected in the Cat Tien Na ture Reserve in 2000 (no year is given for the label data in the list), which was most profoundly studied and proved to be very rich and diverse in terms of the butterfly fauna, and contains new records for the south of the country along with some taxonomic corrections made in view of the new data. Although some of the areas concerned in this paper may be geographically attributed to the southern part of Central Vietnam (or Annam), they were not regarded in our previous publica tions dedicated to the northern and central areas of the country (Devyatkin & M onastyrskii , 1999, 2002), the new data thus being supplementary to those published before on the south ern part of Vietnam (Devyatkin & M onastyrskii , 2000). -

One-hundred adult morphological characters were scored for fifty-four taxa, and were analyzed simultaneousuj (Nixon and Carpenter, 1993). The cladistic analysis showed that all species were properly assigned to monophyletic genera, and the arrangement of the outgroup taxa is in concordance with the classification previously suggested. The eight lndo-Australian and two Afrotropical genera belong to the tribe Vagrantini within the subfamily Heliconiinae. Key words: Heliconiines, Vagrantini, Indo-Australian, butterflies. Introduction The subfamily Heliconiinae is recognized by most authorities but the included taxa may differ. Ackery (in Vane-Wright and Ackery, 1984) suggested that the heliconiines may prove to represent a highly specialized subgroup of the Argynnini sensu lato. Heliconiinae sensu Harvey (in Nijhout, 1991) also include Acraeinae and Argynninae of Ackery (1988).Parsons (1999)included argynnines within Heliconiinae but retained Acraeinae as a distinct subfamily. Harvey (in N ijhou t, 1991) recognized three tribes of Heliconiinae: Pardopsini, Acraeini, and Heliconiini. The Heliconiini include the Neotropical Heliconiina (Brower, 2000), some genera which were placed as "subtribe uncertain", Argynnina, Boloriina and three other genera (the Neotropical genusYramea, the Oriental Kuekenthaliella, and Prokuekenthaliella) with uncertain relationships. -

S. de Medeiros1 & Cassandra G. Extavour1,2* Over the course of evolution, organism size has diversified markedly. Changes in size are thought to have occurred because of developmental, morphological and/or ecological pressures. To perform phylogenetic tests of the potential effects of these pressures, here we generated a dataset of more than ten thousand descriptions of insect eggs, and combined these with genetic and life-history datasets. We show that, across eight orders of magnitude of variation in egg volume, the relationship between size and shape itself evolves, such that previously predicted global patterns of scaling do not adequately explain the diversity in egg shapes. We show that egg size is not correlated with developmental rate and that, for many insects, egg size is not correlated with adult body size. Instead, we find that the evolution of parasitoidism and aquatic oviposition help to explain the diversification in the size and shape of insect eggs. Our study suggests that where eggs are laid, rather than universal allometric constants, underlies the evolution of insect egg size and shape. Size is a fundamental factor in many biological processes. The promotion of flagship species is one way to generate interest in invertebrate conservation. Butterflies are frequently labeled invertebrate flag- ships, but clear definitions of the conservation actions they are meant to catalyze, and empirical assessments of their popularity amongst non-Western audiences are lacking. To improve the use of invertebrate flagships, we examine how butterflies compare with other taxa in terms of popularity. We then identify characteristics of individual species that are appealing and explore whether these may be used to derive a set of guidelines for selecting invertebrate flagships. We conducted questionnaire-based surveys amongst two target audiences: rural residents (n = 255) and tourists (n = 105) in northeast India. Inverte- brates that were aesthetically appealing, or those that provided material benefits or eco- logical services were liked. Butterflies were the most popular group for both audiences, followed by dragonflies, honeybees and earthworms.
