Ispresijecana bistrim potocima i pjenušavim brzacima punim pastrmke, planinska vareška ljepotica Zvijezda, sva okupana u mirisu borove smole i cvrkuta raspjevanih ptica, pruža lijek za dušu i oči slučajnih ili namjernih (a ovih je sve više i više) posjetitelja. ares, that beautiful mountainous commune in the heart of Bosnia and Herzegovina, houses that ravine of the river Stavnja 829 m above sea level. • The Role of Islam in the War in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Is Discussed in the Next Section
MUSLIM IDENTITY, ‘NEO-ISLAM’ AND THE 1992-95 WAR IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA S. OSMANOVIC Ph.D. 2015 ABSTRACT Following the fall of the Berlin Wall, Yugoslavia was entangled in a fratricidal break-up. In none of the other former Yugoslav republics did the conflict turn as violent as in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which suffered genocide, the greatest number of victims and the highest percentage of infrastructural destruction. Although its three ethnic communities – Muslims, Serbs and Croats – were previously well integrated, the break-up of Yugoslavia exposed Bosnia’s unique Islamic component, which both Serbs and Croats perceived to be the major impediment to the continuation of a pluralistic society. Islam, however, only turned into a divisive and decisive factor in the conflict when combined with ethnic nationalism. Previous research into the causes of the 1992-95 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the break-up of Yugoslavia has identified Bosnia’s long Islamic heritage and large Muslim population on the doorstep of Europe as specific features influencing both its rationale and resolution. Yet there has been no analysis of the role and impact of ‘neo-Islam’ (a term I explained below) in the conflict – an omission this thesis seeks to redress. The thesis uses historical analysis to demonstrate that Bosnia and Herzegovina was frequently subject to international intervention during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, it explores whether the unique Islamic component was the reason behind this phenomenon, and seeks to comprehend why Bosnia and Herzegovina has always appeared to pose a problem for the international community, from the papal persecutions of the medieval Bogumils through to the present day.

  • Late Antique and Early Byzantine Fortifications in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Hinterland of the Province of Dalmatia)
Höhensiedlungen zwischen Antike und Mittelalter – RGA-E Band 58 – Seiten 559–594 © CopyrightLate 2008Antique Walter and de Early Gruyter Byzantine · Berlin fortifications · New York in Bosnia and Herzegovina 559 Late Antique and Early Byzantine fortifications in Bosnia and Herzegovina (hinterland of the province of Dalmatia) Perica Sˇpehar The Western Balkans came under Roman rule during the reign of Augustus, when the region of Dalmatia was established, stretching from the Arsia (Rasˇa) river in Istria in the north to the town of Lissus (Ljesˇ) in the south, and including Kvarner (the bay of Rijeka). In the north, the province of Dalmatia bordered the province of Pannonia Superior along a line lying slightly to the south of the course of the river Sava. In the east it bordered the province of Moesia Superior along a line that goes from the confluence of the Kolubara river through Cˇ acˇak and Mt. Sˇara to the Lissus. The borders established during the 1st century did not change significantly, apart from the separation of a part of the territory around the bay of Kotor and Skadar at the end of the 3rd or beginning of the 4th century to form the province of Prevalis, while in the east the province of Dalmatia bor- dered the province of Moesia I, most probably along the course of the river Drina.1 Geographically, the province of Dalmatia can be divided into two zones: the coastal and the mountainous regions. The karst coastland is dis- tinguished by its indented coastline and many islands and bays, but with a small number of fertile fields suitable for agricultural activity.

  • Knezovi Blagajski I Tvrdi Grad Blagaj Nakon Osnutka Jajačke Banovine 1464
Hrvoje Kekez Knezovi Blagajski i tvrdi grad Blagaj nakon osnutka Jajačke banovine 1464. godine dr. sc. Hrvoje Kekez UDK 929.7(497.6Blagaj)’’1463/...’’ Posebna je pozornost posvećena ustanovljivanju vremena ko- načnog kršćanskog napuštanja Blagaja i njegova pada u osmanske ruke tijekom četvrtog desetljeća 16. stoljeća. Ključne riječi: Blagaj, knezovi Blagajski, osmanska prijetnja, Jajačka banovina, ka- sni srednji vijek, fortifikacijska arhitektura. 151 Stjepan Tomašević (1461.-1463.) – slom srednjovjekovnoga Bosanskog Kraljevstva Uvod U ranu zimu 1470.
