Thus, in the perception of literary historians, it is often reduced to a marginal phenomenon, that draws its force solely from its powers of receptivity and imitation. Yet, as Philip Sidney writes in his Apology for Poetry, imitation can be transformed into creative appropriation: ‘the diligent imitators of Tully and Demosthenes (most worthy to be imitated) did not so much keep Nizolian paper-books of their figures and phrases, as by attentive translation (as it were) devour them whole, and made them wholly theirs’. The often lamented marginal position of Scottish early modern literature was also the key to its insatiable exploration of continental models and its development of forms that had long exhausted their vitality in Italy or France. -

The Chapbooks and Broadsides of James Chalmers III, Printer in Aberdeen: Some Re-discoveries and Initial Observations on His Woodcuts IAIN BEAVAN BACKGROUND This essay consists of two related elements. First, an empirical discussion of recent evidence to emerge for chapbook and broadside production in Aberdeen. Second, a consideration of some features of the woodcuts used by James Chalmers III and other chapbook printers, which, in the present context, provide the central evidential theme of this investigation. Previous and contemporary scholars have argued that the north-east of Scotland has the richest ballad and popular song tradition in Britain, and that an analysis of Francis Child’s still unsurpassed and authoritative fi ve-volume compilation, The English and Scottish Popular Ballads, shows that ‘one-third of Child’s Scottish texts and almost one-third of his A-texts [his base or ‘prime’ texts, from which variants may be identifi ed] come from Aberdeenshire’.1 Moreover, ‘of some 10,000 variants of Lowland Scottish songs recorded by the School of Scottish Studies [of Edinburgh University] … several thousand are from the Aberdeen area alone’.2 From the early eighteenth century, popular lowland Scottish song had found itself expressed in printed form, early appearances having been James Watson’s Choice Collection of Comic and Serious Scots Poems, 3 parts (Edinburgh, 1706–11), followed by the Edinburgh Miscellany (Edinburgh, 1720) and Allan Ramsay’s Tea-table Miscellany (Edinburgh, 1723).3 From the mid-eighteenth century also, Scottish chapbook texts appeared in ever increasing numbers, given over to different sub-genres, including histories, prophecies, humorous stories and collections of songs (often called garlands). -

Eighteenth-Century Life. 35(3). 2011. 60–80. doi: https://doi.org/10.1215/00982601-1336799 1 Imagining the Miscellaneous Nation: James Watson’s Choice Collection of Comic and Serious Scots Poems Leith Davis Simon Fraser University On August 6th, 1706, less than a year before the passing of the Act of Union that yoked England and Scotland uneasily together into the single political entity known as Great Britain, the Edinburgh Courant ran an advertisement for the first volume of a collection of verse printed by James Watson: “This day is publish’d a choice Collection of Comic and Serious Scots Poems, both Ancient and Modern. By Several Hands.”1 The second and third volumes followed in 1709 and 1711 respectively. As the first published anthology of Scottish poetry, the Choice Collection of Comic and Serious Scots Poems has long been regarded as a milestone in Scottish literary history. The editor of the Scottish Text Society’s edition, Harriet Harvey Wood, notes that the Collection is “one of the most influential works published in the history of Scottish poetry” and that it is “referred to by almost every historian and critic of Scottish literature from the 18th century onwards” (Wood, 2:ix). In the classic The Paradox of Scottish Culture, for example, David Daiches reads the Choice Collection as “an attempt to make contact with Scotland’s literary past”: “Watson saw himself as serving up to his countrymen what was still available of poetry written in an older tradition”2 According to Daiches, the Choice Collection was “the most important manifestation of [Watson’s] patriotism” (14). -

There is a polit- ical tension in his writings: until the 1730s at least he hoped for the resto- ration of an independent, Stuart, Scottish kingdom, but he also worked for Anglo-Scottish reconciliation. The latter was neither a premedit- ated project on his part, nor direct support of the Hanoverian dynasty, their governments, or the terms of the Treaty of Union. It was a slow movement, measured notably through epistolary poems exchanged with Englishmen. These personal, literary contacts helped him to imagine a common future shared by two peoples, or more precisely their elites. -

AMONG the baronial families of Scotland, the chiefs of the Clan Colquhoun occupy a prominent place from their ancient lineage, their matrimonial alliances, historical associations, and the extent of their territories in the Western Highlands. These territories now include a great portion of the county of Dumbarton. Upwards of seven centuries have elapsed since Maldouen of Luss obtained from Alwyn Earl of Lennox a grant of the lands of Luss; and it is upwards of six hundred years since another Earl of Lennox granted the lands of Colquhoun to Humphrey of Kil- patrick, who afterwards assumed the name of Colquhoun. The lands and barony of Luss have never been alienated since the early grant of Alwyn Earl of Lennox. For six generations these lands were inherited by the family of Luss in the male line; and in the seventh they became the inheritance of the daughter of Godfrey of Luss, commonly designated " The Fair Maid of Luss," and, as the heiress of these lands, she vested them by her marriage, about the year 1385, in her husband, Sir Eobert Colquhoun of Colquhoun. The descendant from that marriage, and the repre sentative of the families of Colquhoun and Luss, is the present baronet, Sir James Colquhoun. The lands and barony of Colquhoun also descended in the male line of the family of Colquhoun for nearly five centuries; and although the greater part of them has been sold, portions still a VI PREFACE. -
John Bill Ricketts and the Edinburgh Equestrian Circus
5 Kim Baston La Trobe University, Australia Transatlantic Journeys: John Bill Ricketts and the Edinburgh Equestrian Circus John Bill Ricketts is generally credited as the founder of American circus, setting up a circus in Philadelphia in 1793. This paper examines evidence from Ricketts’ early career in England and Scotland and argues that the successful transplant of the early modern circus form initiated by Philip Astley into America rested on Ricketts’ experiences with a small circus in Edinburgh, established by the equestrian performers George Jones and William Parker. Not only did this circus provide a repertoire and a business model which Ricketts replicated in his American circuses but, crucially, provided him with a network of experienced performers whom he subsequently employed. The first circus in America owed much to the first circus in Scotland. Kim Baston is a Senior Lecturer in Theatre and Drama at La Trobe University, Melbourne. chapter 12 The Functionality of Lyric in Sixteenth-Century Scotland Alasdair A. MacDonald A remarkable fact in the literary history of early modern Scotland is the sud- den efflorescence of the lyric.1 Whereas in England numerous vernacular lyrics survive from the three centuries between 1200 and 1500 (to say nothing of com- positions in Anglo-Saxon which might be claimed as belonging to the genre), from Scotland there is almost nothing equivalent,2 save for sporadic and brief quotations from poems encountered in historical works,3 or else whole stanzas which, though part of longer poems, have, or can be alleged to have, a cer- tain detachability from their narrative or descriptive environments.4 It is, of course, always dangerous to proceed from an argumentum ex silentio, and it is in the nature of things likely that a corpus of Scottish vernacular lyrics did once indeed exist. The latter, however, would have subsequently disappeared from sight, as a result of such normal factors as accident, weather, vermin, and mil- itary depredation. Yet in addition to these expected forces of destruction, one additional and very specific factor was probably involved: the Protestant Ref- ormation. As the monks and friars, together with their institutions, were swept away, so the texts which they may be supposed to have copied and preserved, or the lyrics which they may have preached in their enterprise of evangelisa- tion, would have proved easy victims of organised vandalism.5 Whatever the explanation, the loss is almost total: how, then, can one be justified in speaking of an efflorescence of the lyric in the sixteenth century? 1 For their comments on an earlier draft of this essay I am much obliged to Dr Jamie Reid Baxter, Dr Theo van Heijnsbergen, and Prof. -

At its centre are the papers of James Skene (1775-1864), artist and friend of Sir Walter Scott. Skene corresponded with notable individuals in the cultural circles of his day and was connected with such organizations as the Royal Institution, the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, the Royal Society of Edinburgh, the Institute for the Encouragement of the Fine Arts in Scotland, the Board of Trustees for Manufacturers, and the Bannatyne Club, among others. The archive was formerly in the possession of Major P.I.C. Payne, of Minehead, in Somerset, who acquired the material by purchase from various sources. Some of Major Payne’s own papers relating to the collection from the 1960s, 70s and 80s are included (folders 102-107). Major Payne provided individual descriptions of a portion of the earlier Skene family papers (folders 1-10). These descriptions are listed in the Appendix to this inventory. Folder 10 includes some letters of James Skene himself. Other related families (folders 22-36) include Moir of Stoneywood (the family of James Skene’s mother, Jane), the Forbes family (that of Skene’s wife, Jane, daughter of Sir William Forbes of Pitsligo), Russell of Aden, Keith of Ludquhairn, Gordon of Balgown, Ramsay of Invernellie and Peterhead, and Skene of Halyards and Curriehill. -
