This dance, now known as “on 2” mambo, or salsa, for its relationship to the clave, is the first uniquely North American form of vernacular Latino dance on the East Coast. This paper traces the New York mambo’s develop- ment from its beginnings at the Palladium Ballroom through the salsa and hustle years and up to the present time. The current period is characterized by increasing growth, commercialization, codification, and a blending with other modern, urban dance genres such as hip-hop. Saturday, February 11 @ 7 PM and 9:30 PM Prince Theatre Part of the African Roots, American Voices series. 16/17 SEASON 5 PROGRAM NOTES Miguel Zenón’s new album, Típico, is above all a celebration of his longstanding quartet. His previous releases have augmented the core unit with additional instrumentalists as Zenón looked outward to explore various aspects of his Puerto Rican heritage. This new album feels more intimate. Its focus stays closer to home, with nods to Zenón’s own personal and professional life as it zeroes in on what makes his band unique. Zenón’s quartet has been developing a common language for more than a decade. Pianist Luis Perdomo and bassist Hans Glawischnig have been with Zenón since the turn of the millennium; drummer Henry Cole joined the band in 2005. Their language is thoroughly fluent in modern jazz, with instrumental prowess. The dialect of rhythmic and harmonic complexity they’ve created together through the years is distinctive. ABOUT THE ARTISTS Miguel Zenón (Alto Sax) Multiple Grammy® nominee and Guggenheim and MacArthur Fellow Miguel Zenón represents a select group of musicians who have masterfully balanced and blended the often contradictory poles of innovation and tradition. Chicago (Hyde Park) – The University of Chicago Department of Music is pleased to announce the schedule of events for Puerto Rican band Plena Libre’s 2019-20 residencies. The band, which is the University’s newest Don Michael Randel Ensemble-in-Residence, will participate in a rich variety of events and programs, including concerts, workshops, moderated public discussions, classroom visits, and more. Nominated for multiple GRAMMY and Latin GRAMMY awards, Plena Libre has earned acclaim for taking the once-dormant style of plena music and reclaiming it for a new generation. Featuring three vocalists, bass, drums, horns, and requinto guitar, the group infuses their contemporary Caribbean compositions with a deep sense of the unique indigenous musical traditions developed in Puerto Rico over a century ago. “The University is honored to welcome Plena Libre as the Don Michael Randel Ensemble-in-Residence,” said David Levin, Senior Advisor to the Provost for Arts. “We look forward to sharing the distinctive musical style of Puerto Rico through a wide variety of adventurous and creative programming.” Over three separate weeks in November, March, and April-May, Plena Libre will give four public performances, accompany three Puerto Rican dance workshops, lead workshops with University instrumental ensembles, participate in luncheon discussions with the Center for Latin American Studies, visit music and Spanish language classes, and more. -

Eugenio Maria de Hostos Community College / CUNY Humanities Department Visual & Performing Arts Unit Academic Program Review Fall 2016 Second Draft Academic Program Mission Statement The Visual & Performing Arts Unit fosters and maintains the history and practice of all aspects of artistic endeavor in the College and the community. Through its curriculum, members of the College community and other members of the urban community explore, interpret, and apply the artistic practices that lead to a better understanding of themselves, their environment, and their roles in society. Description of the Unit The VPA Unit is the largest unit of the Humanities Department. It serves approximately 1,125 students from all majors at Hostos every semester. With courses as far ranging as painting and drawing, art history, public speaking, acting, music, and photography, students can pursue many possible creative paths. Those who elect to earn credits in the visual and performing arts will find a variety of approaches to learning that include lecture and studio based classes as well as workshops that allow for the exploration of extracurricular interests or even for the development of career centered skill sets vital to the pursuit of employment opportunities. The successful completion of courses in the arts are a useful and, in many cases, essential basis for study in other disciplines. They are also a valuable source for personal development. Students interested in planning a concentration in the visual and performing arts are advised to consult with the Visual and Performing Arts Coordinator. The Media Design Programs were originally housed in the VPA Unit, but operate as a separate unit due to the considerable growth of students and courses.
