LAST TIME OUT: Mota left his start on May 16 against Bowling Green after two innings due to a blister on his throwing hand. He pitched two innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits. Grant Witherspoon accounted for the earned run against Mota with a solo homer in the second inning. Mota struck out two and did not issue a walk.

INJURED LIST: Mota was placed on the Injured List on May 17 due to a blister on his throwing hand. He was activated ahead of today’s start.

IMPROVED CONTROL: Mota vastly improved his control last year, dropping his BB% from 11.9% in 2017 to 5.9% in 2018. As another means of describing his improvement, Mota owned the third-lowest BB% on the 2018 Mahoning Valley Scrappers, just one year after having the fifth-highest BB% on the 2017 AZL Indians (minimum 30 IP for both). This came after Eric Longenhagen of Fangraphs expressed in April of 2018 that Mota “has swing-and-miss stuff but is far away from a strike-throwing perspective.”

LESS SWING-AND-MISS: While M ota improved his cont rol last year, his numbers took a dip. After a K% of 27.0% in 2017, the right-hander’s K% dropped to 20.8% in 2018. Put another way, his 2017 K% was the second-highest on the AZL Indians, behind Luis Oviedo (28.1%), while his 2018 K% was third-lowest on the 2018 Mahoning Valley Scrappers.

BAD LUCK?: Mota’s 5.53 ERA in 2018 belies his strong peripheral numbers. With a 3.34 FIP, Mota’s 2.19 E-F (ERA minus FIP) was the highest of any Scrappers pitcher last season (minimum 20 IP). In other words, he had the largest difference between his ERA and his FIP. This could owe partially to his career-high .356 BABIP, 2019 Highs which ranked third on the Scrappers (minimum 20 IP).
