Cedar Rapids opened the scoring with a run in the first on a wild pitch that scored Spencer Steer and added a run in the second when Steer’s RBI ground Midwest League • Second Half out knocked in Tyler Webb. The Captains answered in the third on an RBI infield single by Daniel Schneemann, but Jared Akin’s three-run homer in the seventh pushed the Kernels’ lead to 5-1. Lake County loaded the bases with one out in the ninth on two walks and a hit batsman by reliever Brian Rapp. Carlos Suniaga came in to pitch and the Captains got two big two-out hits. Ruben Cardenas pulled a two-run single Eastern Division W L GB into left and Jose Fermin dunked an RBI single into left-center before racing to second when the throw came into the infield. The Captains had the tying run on third and the winning run on second, but Suniaga struck out Schneemann to end the game. The Captains’ shortstop batted .632 (12-for-19) with a double, a triple, three RBI and three runs scored with one walk and no strikeouts. Schneemann posted four multi-hit Lansing (Blue Jays) 13 12 4.0 performances out of five games played, highlighted by a 4-for-4 performance at Burlington on Saturday. The Captains also pitched a combined no-hitter on June 22 in game two of a doubleheader against the West Michigan Whitecaps.
