New Mileage Rate 2006

Beginning Jan. 1, 2006, the standard mileage rates for the use of a car will be: 44.5 cents per mile for business miles driven

The new rate for business miles compares to a rate of 40.5 cents per mile for the first eight months of 2005. In September, the IRS made a special one-time adjustment for the last four months of 2005, raising the rate for business miles to 48.5 cents per mile in response to a sharp increase in gas prices. The IRS states that the new 2006 rate now reflects a decrease in gas prices.

All expense reimbursements beginning January 1, 2006 will be paid at the new rate of 44.5. The campus expense report has been adjusted to reflect this change.

The Admissions Office has begun work on a new viewbook for the 2006-2007 school year and we need your help! NASCAR Night: A race like no other

NASCAR Night in the Commons was a grand event. Thanks to all drivers, judges, pit crew members, media coordinators, the track design team, and spectators who made our first WOFFORD 300 a success. (Next time we will invest in more race cars and less masking tape. ) cars and less masking tape. )

If you were unable to attend you missed a show. The event concluded after an "track of doom" mini-race, trick car spinouts, ramp jumping, a DDR dance-off, and a foot race.

Thomas "Smell My Rubber" Pierce, international ballroom dance champ and remote control car expert, won the golden Hummer. He beat Terrance "The Falcon" Ware in a sudden death, trick jump finale. "The Falcon" was the winner of the foot race semifinal. A red Escalade was his consolation prize.

Jason "Thunder Goggles" McElveen stole the blue car. After his second place finish in the foot race, McElveen proved too fast to chase.

Honorable Mention goes to "Duct Tape" Fort the 14 year-old wonder boy. He is the new Tiger Woods of Collegiate Remote Control Car Races.

If you are interested in planning the next race night in the Commons, please contact [email protected]. A quality control team is sorely needed.

Cultural Events Calendar/Poster for Spring

The Communications Office is preparing posters to announce the arts and cultural events for the spring semester and needs your help now. This is a reminder that we need you to post your events to the online campus calendar by Monday, Jan. 16, to be included in the poster. This is a firm deadline for our printer. Timely posting to the online calendar also helps avoid conflicts, and is a great way to promote your event. To post to the online calendar, go to the Wofford home page (www.wofford.edu) and click on Calendar. Click on “Add Event” and fill in the blanks. You must include a valid e-mail address (preferably your Wofford e-mail). Details are vital – especially date, time and location. Remember that posting to the online calendar does not reserve your room; you must make those reservations with the appropriate staff person. If you have problems posting your information, or have other questions, contact Laura Corbin at x4180 or [email protected]. Only events posted on the online calendar by Monday will be included on the poster. President Dunlap hopes to give all arts and cultural events on campus more prominence, and this earlier scheduling will help the Communications Office help you.

To: All Members of the Wofford College Community From: Lee Sartor, Director of Campus Safety Date: January 31, 2006 Re: New Parking Regulations

Welcome to the Spring Semester 2006. This is a great time to be at Wofford. The Board of Trustees has approved the construction of apartment style housing on the north side of the campus across Evins Street. These apartments are scheduled to open in September so construction will begin in a couple of weeks. The construction site includes the parking lots adjacent to the tennis center on Evins Street. Therefore, the lots on either side of Thomas Street will close soon, and we will need your cooperation when they do.

Students who live in Shipp Hall will be asked to park in the grass lot located across Evins Street from the mall behind the Main Building. Sometimes referred to as the ROTC lot, this lot is now called the Liberty Trail lot. Students who live in 121 Evins Hall and Wightman Hall are asked to park in the Shipp Hall parking lot in the rows closest to the Olin Building and along Evins Street. In addition, a few spaces will be available on the horseshoe. These spaces are reserved for faculty and staff only from 8:00 am -5:00 pm Monday-Friday.

Special Notes: 1. All students, faculty, and staff (all employees) must have a permit for their vehicle no matter where they park it. Permits can be obtained in the Campus Safety Office. 2. Students are reminded that the Traffic Commission voted to mark the parking spaces on the south side of the Shipp Hall lot for faculty and staff only from 8:00 am -5:00 pm Monday- Friday. Students are welcome to park in those spaces during the evening and weekend hours. Students who do not move their vehicles during the day Monday-Friday will be ticketed or have their vehicles towed. 3. The City of Spartanburg has given our Campus Safety officers the authority to issues college tickets for yellow curb violations, opposing direction violations, and/or any other parking offenses on Memorial Drive, Evins Street, and Cumming Streets. 4. Parking is not allowed on the Campus Drive. Students and staff who drive to Burwell should not park on the curb. 5. Current students, faculty and staff should not park in any spaces marked for visitors. 6. Students must have a Handicapped Permit to park in the spaces dedicated to people with special physical needs. 7. Occasionally, parking spaces are reserved for Special Guests of the College. Please do not remove the reserved signs or park in these spaces. 8. The two spaces on the right hand side of the Dean of Student’s driveway are designated for off campus visitors to the Library. Students and faculty should not park in these spaces. 9. Commuting students, faculty, and staff members to use the parking lot in front of the Richardson Building and the Andrews/Baseball Field Lot

All violators (students, faculty and staff) must pay their traffic fines. Vehicles of repeat offenders will be booted and/or towed at the owner’s expense.

Please contact me at 597-4371 or [email protected] if you have any questions or require further clarification. Thank you for your cooperation and assistance in keeping our campus safe. Attention Wofford Students A New Program of Student Research

Live Free on Campus - Earn a Stipend Summer 2006

Wofford College is pleased to announce an exciting program for Wofford students. This summer students will have an opportunity to conduct research with faculty members, live on campus free, and earn a stipend for their work. The program is called “THE COMMUNITY OF SCHOLARS.”

As many as twenty students may pursue research projects in the sciences, humanities, or social sciences this summer at Wofford. For the ten weeks of the summer school sessions, Fellows will work under the supervision of faculty Mentors who will themselves be engaged in research. During the ten weeks, all participants in the program will meet together each week for lunches and dinners allowing for cross-disciplinary discussions of their projects.

Student Fellows will be paid a stipend of $2000, and will be given room and board over the period of research. Expenses for the research may be provided. In the first three weeks of the fall semester a symposium will be held as a campus-wide celebration of undergraduate research at Wofford. Each Fellow will present a summary of his or her project. One student in each area (science, humanities, social science) may be selected for a best project award of $1000 and recognized at the fall symposium.

The names of students selected as Fellows by a faculty committee will be announced by March 10. Any student who will return to Wofford in the fall is eligible to apply for the program. Interested students should

(1) obtain a more detailed description of the program from department chairs,

(2) contact a faculty member to seek his or her agreement to serve as a Mentor,

(3) complete an application (available from your department chair) outlining the proposed research, and submit the application to Dean Maultsby’s office by March 1. The committee will announce the names of students selected as Fellows by March 10.

Research is an effective way to develop critical skills and presentational skills. It is an important achievement enhancing a resume and an individual’s competitiveness for admission to graduate or professional schools and for employment after graduation from Wofford. The college is pleased to offer this special opportunity for Wofford students.
