When reached for comment on Tues- day afternoon, BoMRA Public Relations Manager Israel Kgosidiile confirmed raids of a number of fake COVID-19 medical equipment including suspected fake sanitizers and thermometers from some local companies. He said some of these products were found to be hazard- ous and dangerous for consumers. According to international media, in 2016 Botswana ordered 50 MICA missiles for a single VL MICA surface-to-air missile sys- tem and 50 Mistral surface-to-air missiles. These were acquired from France’s MBDA for approximately €304.2 million. South Africa’s DefenceWeb. co.za explains that the VL MICA is a short range, ground based air defence system deploying the MICA fire-and-forget missile, capable of being fitted with either a heat-seeking homing head or with an active radar seeker head and interception range is up to 20 km. Photos seen by this publication appears to show MOWAG Piranha armoured vehicles being transported on the back of lowbed trucks and these form part of a consignment Botswana procured from Switzerland. Defence export and Director at African Defence Review, Darren Olivier, told the SA website that “ The wrapped vehicles look to be MOWAG Piranhas, which the Botswana Defence Force already operates. In 2016 it ordered an additional 45 Pira- nhas, which have been arriving in small batches over the past few years in convoys just like this. In other words, nothing to worry about,” Olivier said. n the 17th May 2020, LEGABIBO will join the global community to Ocommemorate the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia – IDAHOBIT. “IDAHOBIT was created in 2004 to draw the attention to the violence and discrimination experi- enced by lesbian, gay, bisexuals, transgen- der, intersex, queer – LGBTIQ people and all other people with diverse sexual orien- tations, gender identities or expressions, and sex characteristics”. “The date of May 17th was specifically chosen to commemo- rate the World Health Organization’s deci- sion in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder”. LEGABIBO has commemorated IDA- HOBIT since 2011 with both the LGB- TIQ community and the general Botswana community. The commemorations called for educating the public on sexual and gender diversity and inclusion at all lev- els. This year, we intend to do the same by reaching out to more area of Botswana and Batswana in general. This year’s theme is “Breaking the Silence”. This comes at a moment where Botswana has made gains in promoting human rights and inclusion of LGBTIQ. LEGABIBO commends the Government of Botswana, partners, and allies in following a steady trajectory in protecting the rights of sexual and gender minority persons and promoting inclusion for all. It is essential to note that even with the progress made, many LGBTIQ individuals continue to face stigma and discrimination, violence, and exclusion. For many of us, we have found ourselves having to hide our sexuality, gender identity and our varying sex characteristics to both our families and communities in general. Due to the stigma and discrimination we face from our fami- lies and the general community, we tend to wander through life feeling ashamed of who we are and dying in silence. For LGBTIQ in Botswana the subject of equal justice and protection by the law cannot be understated. Without inclusive structural and institutional support, many sexual mi- norities in Botswana are less likely to seek out health, legal, social, economic, or other public services to which they are entitled to.
