10th EUROPEAN LITERATURE DAYS 22-25 NOVEMBER 2018 SPITZ/KREMS A.D. DONAU CONTENTS 3 Foreword 5 Agenda at a Glance 13 Agenda in Detail 29 Fringe Programme / Moderators 34 Readings / Workshops in Schools 37 Tickets / Booking and Reservations Service / Venues Dear Guests and Participants of the European Literature Days!

The European Literature Days celebrate their first milestone: 2018 is the tenth anniversary year. This unique literature festival enjoys an outstanding reputation far beyond our country’s bor- ders. It is fortunate that our ten-year anniversary coincides with ’s EU-Presidency. This is a wonderful occasion that I wish to mark by highlighting Austria’s decisive contribution to culture. I refer to the European dimension, which characterizes our culture, and which the European Literature Days bring to life in an exemplary fashion. A host of internationally renowned writers gathers again in the Wachau region to share ideas. In 2018, the focus continues to be the topical themes of contemporary so- ciety: How is the world educated? What is the status of reading books and literary film? And what is the position of literary- artistic narrative in the age of wall-to-wall media coverage?

I am convinced that literature is still relevant today. The European Literature Days are a model that underlines this. Besides the intellectual exchange, the highlight of the festival are meetings with prominent European writers – this special inter- action gives the European Literature Days their unique appeal for interested guests and visitors. Stimulating events inspire curiosity for reading books. The Wachau countryside, the historic locations in Spitz and Stein an der Donau with their wonderful ambiance and not least the regional gourmet food provide the ideal backdrop for this festival.

Of special interest are the events in schools and at the Karikaturmuseum Krems that are designed to attract a young . The collaborative work with the eljub European Youth Meetings is an exemplary initiative to promote cultural commu- nication in .

I look forward to the European Literature Days 2018 and wish the team every success.

Johanna Mikl-Leitner Governor of Lower Austria

1 Dear Guests and Participants of the European Literature Days!

Writers and literary talents instinctively respond to current trends; they can trace them, counteract and shine a light on them. In an age of wall-to-wall media coverage, we are sur- rounded more than ever with a myriad of texts and images. Can we still tell the difference between fact and fiction? What do facts initiate in our minds? What affects us emotionally and what confronts us with insights?

This year, the European Literature Days explore the interdiscip- linary discourse between literature and film, language and the visual image. I am delighted that Wachau, with the support of the EU project “Literaturhaus Europa”, has become a place for international networking and for getting together with Europe’s literary community.

Exceptional literary narrative – regardless of its medium of communication – gives us direction. Even in current times, it has not lost any of its eloquence and enchantment. I hope that these influences will continue to resonate at this year’s European Literature Days.

Gernot Blümel Federal Minister for the EU, Art, Culture and Media

2 FOREWORD EuropEAN LiteraturE DAYS 2018

Get to Know Literature. Get Together in Wachau.

For the tenth successive year, Europe’s literary community gets together in the unique ambiance of Wachau for a weekend of intel- lectual debate and to introduce exceptional books. From 22 to 25 November, you can look forward to a special anniversary occasion: writers and film directors discuss the relationship of literature and film. Alongside the entertaining literary, musical and gastronomic events, we also present several film screenings.

The Literature Days open on Thursday evening at the Klangraum Krems Minoritenkirche with another debate this year led by Robert Menasse on a current contemporary issue. Under the head- line theme How is the world educated?, Robert Menasse is joined by philosopher Richard David Precht to discuss whether and how we are equipped to deal with the challenges of the future. At Schloss Spitz and the Kino Kesselhaus Krems, the agenda for Friday and Saturday carries on with Q&A discussions, readings and film screenings about this year’s theme of narrative in literature and film accompanied, among others, by Katharina Hacker, Ildikó Enyedi, Kathrin Resetarits and Răzvan Rădulescu. Which pictures and narrative plots affect us emotionally? Why and how do they do this, and why do other media leave us totally indifferent?

Another programme highlight introduces selected books together with wine tastings, fine food and music: on Friday, withVea Kaiser and the guitar and cello duo Sain Mus; and on Saturday,

3 including Nino Haratischwili, Carmen Stephan and Madame Nielsen. On Sunday, Ilija Trojanow will be awarded this year’s Austrian Book Trade Honorary Award for Tolerance in Thought and Action as part of a literary and musical matinée with the ensemble ContrasTon from Budapest.

The versatile fringe programme offers film screenings at theKino im Kesselhaus, guided tours through Spitz an der Donau and the Maritime Museum as well as the exhibition Austria’s Finest Books/ Die schönsten Bücher Österreichs at the Karikaturmuseum Krems.

We warmly invite you to join us!

Walter Grond Artistic Director of Literaturhaus Europa

Happiness. Narrative in Literature and Film Walter Grond, Artistic Director of Literaturhaus Europa

Schloss zu Spitz Fri 23.11.2018, 09.00

Can love stories be simply told? What lies behind the ambivalent phrase ‘tell us a story’? Every culture needs storytelling to find direction, to develop and not to implode. Film, like literature, has long been a source of such fables, which makes literature and film so fascinating. Both genres show that there are no definite truths; yet, they show a way forward because they approximate reality. An idea of truth lies behind the metamorphoses and artifices of literature and film and their play on facts and fictions.

To trace the magic of literature and film, the European Litera- ture Days 2018 invite participants to contemplate the differen- ces between narrative approaches in literature and film. What techniques are used by these genres to control our emotions? summarized the difference between image and language: visual images reveal pain and language explains its underlying causes. Is this summary true? Is his idea of writing as a process of doubt and contradiction also a suitable description for these genres?

How do stories, novels and films affect us emotionally? What is the difference between a text narrative and one based on moving images? Which narrative techniques are used in litera- ture and film? What makes literary texts inspire a film adapta- tion? How do films influence writing? Where are the transitions between the usually collective film productions and the highly individual process of writing?

Film (Un)Happy Love – A Tangled Web of Happiness. Films by writers and directors participating in the European Literature Days.

Films:

The Have-Nots Director: Florian Hoffmeister, Screenplay: Mona Kino, Germany/Great Britain 2016

On 11 September 2001, Isabelle and Jakob fall in love. The private joy and helplessness after the terror attacks on the New York World Trade Center are intertwined with fatal consequences for young couple’s lives. Katharina Hacker’s novel was awarded the German Book Prize. It captures the sentiments of a generation who experience our world in a state of upheaval. The film adaptation directed by Florian Hoffmeister narrates the story of an intense relationship.

Love Island Director: Jasmila Žbanić, Screenplay: Jasmila Žbanić and Aleksandar Hemon, Bosnia-Herzegowina/Croatia/ Germany/Switzerland 2014

Jasmila Žbanić co-wrote the screenplay for this romantic comedy with the Bosnian-Canadian writer Aleksandar Hemon. A married couple spends the holiday on the Croatian Adriatic coast. The couple enjoys the hazy days of relaxation until a young seductress appears. No secrets stay hidden for long on the island, and so an un- usual relationship intrigue plays out at the height of the summer vacation.

30 On Body and Soul Director: Ildikó Enyedi, Screenplay: Ildikó Enyedi, Hungary 2017

An introvert financial director of an abattoir and a female quality inspector, who appears to be autistic, both notice that they have the same dreams at night. They tentatively move closer. The story concentrates on a love affair where language is not enough to convey feelings and desires that remain locked in the body and only reach the other through images.

Wuthering Heights Director: Andrea Arnold, Screenplay: Olivia Hetreed, Great Britain 2011

Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë is regarded as a contemporary classic novel of 19th-century British literature. Many literary and musical adaptations have been produced, including twenty films since the 1920s. Beyond the societal, family and relationship drama, like the literary original, the film directed by Andrea Arnold and adapted by Olivia Hetreed endeavours to represent life and the world with vivid sensuality and detail.

35 The eljub European Youth Meetings are dedicated to the promotion of intercultural dialogue and youth networking for young people in European countries and especially in the Danube region. Eljub is inspired by shared heritage as well as the solidarity and creativity of European youth. The eljub European Youth Meetings are a European project that now has three elements: eljub Ebook Week, eljub Dialogue and eljub Literature.

On 22 November, the fourth eljub Dialogue Conference takes place.

Eljub Dialogue is a workshop for the future where young people devise ideas for European integration. It is based on the vision of a European initiative. In the context of Structured Dialogue, young people in many different European countries meet political decision- makers who work on a local, regional and national level. As a grassroots project, the criticisms, ideas and suggestions submitted by young people are conveyed to the European Commission.

The eljub Dialogue evolves from the results of the eljub eBook Weeks. The relevant the- mes are also discussed in depth on other platforms: in the workshops held in parallel to the ebook week, in the ongoing local dialogues in various Danube region countries as well as at the annual dialogue conferences in Krems an der Donau. The results of these mee- tings are published bi-annually as an ebook.

At the same time as the eljub Dialogue Conference and events, young people from Lower Austria meet writers participating in the European Literature Days during workshops and literature readings.

Ships and boats travelled along the River Danube long before modern times. For the ancient Romans, the Danube was the frontier between the Roman Empire and countries in the north; in the Middle Ages, it was the centre of east-west trade in the Austro-Bavarian Danube region. Before the introduction of steamships in the mid- 19th century, ships and rafts were made entirely of wood. The Maritime Museum in the former Schloss Erlahof offers visitors
