(English Literature), Department of English Government College Woman University, Faisalabad. Pakistan Abstract Roots by Alex Haley is a critical analysis of the traumas of slavery experienced by the Africans. As an Afro- American writer, he gives voice to the issues like racism, subjugation, identity crises of the Blacks, but most of all the institution of slavery. Slavery has been an important phenomenon throughout history. Africa has been intimately connected with this history through Americans. Slavery in America began when the African slaves were brought to the North American colony of Jamestown, Virginia, in 1619, to aid in the production of such lucrative crops like tobacco and cotton. After the research of twelve years, Haley describes the experiences of Kunta Kinte before and after his enslavement, who is the great-great-grandfather of the writer. Roots is not just a saga of one Afro-American family, it is the symbolic saga of a people. The dehumanization process of slavery assaults the mind, body, and soul of African slaves. The purpose of this paper is to highlight and investigate the slow momentum of social reform for Blacks in the U.S.A. This will be qualitative research and critical race analysis will be applied as a tool to analyze the text under discussion. By using the theory of Derrick Bell the researcher will try to explore racism and black identity in this work. -

This research study aims to empirically address the political dynamics reflected on Paraguay’s print press during the 2013 elections campaign. Method. This empirical study is based on the social network analysis of the name references included in a sample of news articles. Results. The results of the study include several graphical representations of the coverage of political actors during the 2013 elections campaign, which was strongly conditioned by the previous impeachment and removal of former President Fernando Lugo. Conclusions. This study of name references confirms the continuity of the traditional parties in Paraguay as institutions with political and media power, and the secondary and peripheral role of the actors that emerged in the political landscape when Fernando Lugo won the presidency of Paraguay. -
The European Union's Policy Towards Mercosur
towards Mercosur towards policy Union’s The European EPRU The European Union’s policy towards Mercosur European Series Policy This book provides a distinctive and empirically rich account of the European Research Union’s (EU’s) relationship with the Common Market of the South (Mercosur). It seeks to examine the motivations that determine the EU’s policy towards Unit Mercosur, the most important relationship the EU has with another regional Series economic integration organization. In order to investigate these motivations (or lack thereof), this study The European examines the contribution of the main policy- and decision-makers, the European Commission and the Council of Ministers, as well as the different contributions of the two institutions. It analyses the development of EU policy towards Mercosur in relation to three key stages: non-institutionalized Union’s policy relations (1986–1990), official relations (1991–1995), and the negotiations for an association agreement (1996–2004 and 2010–present). Arana argues that the dominant explanations in the literature fail to towards adequately explain the EU’s policy – in particular, these accounts tend to infer the EU’s motives from its activity. Drawing on extensive primary documents, the book argues that the major developments in the relationship were initiated by Mercosur and supported mainly by Spain. Rather than Mercosur the EU pursuing a strategy, as implied by most of the existing literature, the EU was largely responsive, which explains why the relationship is much less developed than the EU’s relations with other parts of the world. Tool 2—Timeline On a separate sheet of paper, create a timeline of important facts related to your topic. This will help you create a historic record and make connections with current events. Law As The Handmaid of Politics: The Case of Paraguay by Mario Ramos-Reyes, Ph.D. Abstract What is the role of law in Latin America? And, what is the role of culture? The recent history of the Republic of Paraguay serves as a useful case study to address these questions. The historical facts are beyond dispute. Paraguay has had three different Constitutions over the past seventy years but one fundamental question remains unresolved. To what extent is a paternalistic-nationalistic form of executive power, ranging from the “inorganic” (Rousseaunian) character to the heavy influence of the “caudillista” style influence the legal system? Professor Ramos-Reyes, an expert in Latin American politics, explores how political needs and cultural aspirations have influenced the shape of the diverse legal forms of the executive power, mainly but not exclusively on the Paraguayan experience since the 1930s. What were the ideas behind the periodic changes of constitutions? Does it follow then that constitutions may be changed for the sake of political expediency to support and legitimize non-democratic values? The current realities of Paraguay in particular and Latin America in general, seem to support the author’s thesis. “What confuses the spirit even more is the use that [people] make of these words: democracy, democratic institutions, democratic government. If we do not define them clearly, and understand these definitions, we will live in a confusion of inextricable ideas, benefiting all demagogues and despots.” Alexis de Tocqueville1 A. NATIONAL REPORT PARAGUAY SEMINAR-WORKSHOP ACCESS TO INFORMATION IN LATIN -AMERICA Responsible: Cipriano Ayala Gonzalez Technical Officer of the National Library 1999 BUENOS AIRES - ARGENTINA THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF PARAGUAY I. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Senators Bernardino Caballero, José Segundo Decoud and Rosendo Carisimo put forward a bill, which entered the Senate on August 1st. 1887. Some weeks later both the Senate and the House enacted the act by which the National Library and Museum in the city of Asunción was created. The same act established that the Executive create a commission of at least five members in charge of the development and oversight of said Library and Museum, and of the budget assigned for that purpose. The act also established that Congress provide the funds needed for the upkeep of the National Library and Museum. On the 21st. September 1887, the President of Paraguay, General Patricio Escobar, enforced the act which set up these important cultural facilities. The President also established the commission, which was formed by the following people: Dr. Benjamin Aceval, Ramon Zubizarreta, and .Jose N. González, Ricardo Brugada and Alejandro Audibert. During the first years of the National Library and Museum, the vice-president, who was Chairman of the Asunción Town Hall, requested the government that the public library and the museum staff, in charge of this body, be sufficient to set up their collections of printed matter and the collections of the adjoining Museum. In accordance with the Town Hall’s request, the president of the Republic, Juan G. González, adopted a decree establishing that the commission of the National Library and Museum take charge, drawing up an inventor of the books, goods and funds belonging to the Library and adjoining Museum. -

Studien syftar till att undersöka argumentet att rasism har en långvarig effekt på de människor som utsätts för rasism. I detta fall, karaktärerna i romanen som utsätts för rasismens olika hemskheter så som slaveri. Genom användningen av Robert Jensen, WEB Du Bois och Edward Saids teorier (dvs. Privileged/unprivileged, The Veil, Double Consciousness och Others) har romanen Roots analyserats. Slutsatsen visar på hur slaveriet påverkade huvudpersonerna och hur effekten av slaveri lyckats beröva de svarta människorna i romanen deras ursprungliga identitet. Slaveriet ersattes istället av en kollektiv identitet av mindre värde än vita människors identitet vilket lämnat långvariga psykiska ärr för karaktärerna i romanen. Det pedagogiska fokus som används i uppsatsen är den så kallad cooperative learning metoden.
