As a host of the official opening ceremony and part of the Championship’s concerts over the years, I had the opportunity to realize the essential role of holding a forum of this scale - role of preserving and spreading the native memory and traditions, the national identity. The old town of Nessebar became part of the emblems related to the Eu- ropean Association of Folklore Festivals - EAFF. Conducting an event of this kind in such an ancient place, illustrates the importance of protecting not only the architectural and historical values but also the spirit and culture of songs, dances and customs. I express my support for your heartiness and dedication in the presenta- tion of grandeur of folklore in the its full magnificence. For more than eleven years, Nessebar municipality has been a long-time and successful partner of the Association. I express my deepest respect for the work of all those people involved in organizing and conducting the XI European Championship of Folklore “Euro Folk 2019”! Let the participants from Bulgaria and abroad present in the most digni- fied way the folklore richness of their homeland. May the organizers succeed with even more urge and dedication to create conditions for spreading the intan- gible cultural heritage! I wish everyone a successful presentation! I believe that the experience in the hospitable resorts of Nessebar and Sunny Beach will make the stay of participants unforgettable. Good luck! Nikolay Dimitrov Mayor of Municipality of Nessebar

© Research Project ”New and Ambiguous Nation-building Processes in Southeastern Europe” (Berlin/Graz 2007) Institutional Chronology of Nation Building REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA The Republic of Macedonia declared its independence from Yugoslavia on 19 November 1991. In 1944, the People’s Republic of Macedonia (NRM) had been established as one of the six constituent republics of the Federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia. In 1963, the re- public’s name was changed into Socialist Republic of Macedonia (SRM). 1. Census-related Issues (after 1945) 1.1 Institution in Charge for Statistical Data and Censuses: By the decision of the Government of the PR of Macedonia on June 1, 1945, the Macedonian Federal Statistical Bureau was formed. Concomitant to the establishment of the national Sta- tistical Bureau, local statistical bureaus were created as well with the task to participate in collecting basic statistical data and carry out statistical research for the needs of the state. 1.2 Years of Census Since the end of the Second world War, 8 population censuses were conducted in the Re- public of Macedonia: 1948, 1953, 1961, 1971, 1981, 1991, 1994, 2002. Since the first post-war census, the ethnonym “Macedonians” was used for the majority pop- ulation of Macedonia, in contrast to the decades before, when they were counted as “Serbs” in the censuses of inter-war Yugoslavia. The largest minority are the Albanians, today com- prising about 25 percent of the total population. 1.3 Share of Macedonians and Albanians of the Total Population Year Total population Macedonians Albanians in 1,000 in % of the total population 1948 1,115 68.5 17.1 1953 1,305 66.0 12.4* 1961 1,406 71.2 13.0 1971 1,647 69.3 17.0 1981 1,909 67.0 19.8 1991 2,034 65.3 21.7 1994 1,946 66.6 22.7 2002 2,041 64.2 25.2 The numbers for other minorities in 2002 were: Turks 77,959 (3.85 %), Roma 53,879 (2.66 %), Serbs 35,939 (1.78 %), Bosniaks 17,018 (0.84%) and Vlachs 9.596 (0.48 %).

As a post-socialist city, the development of Ohrid has unique characters in terms of landscape, economic dynamics, and functional dimensions. The study's aim is also achieved by analyzing the validity and applicability of the Tourism Area Life Cycle (TALC) model with regard to the evolution of tourism development in Ohrid, specifically, and in other cities in general. The article emphasizes the connection between the city’s urban context and tourism development. The findings also indicate that Ohrid is currently in its Development stage and that its life cycle curve exhibits a double cycle sequence, meaning that Ohrid is attracting many visitors and has reached a state of Received: 11.05.2019 Accepted: 13.09.2019 Published: 15.12.2019 Published under the terms and conditions of an Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International license.

Fifty-four years after Germany played host to the second ever Eurovision Song Contest, the musical jamboree comes to Düsseldorf this May. It’s a very different world since ARD staged the show in 1957 with just 10 nations in a small TV studio in Frankfurt. This year, a record 43 countries will take part in the three shows, with a potential audience of 35,000 live in the Esprit Arena. All 10 nations from 1957 will be on show in Germany, but only two of their languages survive. The creaky phone lines that provided the results from the 100 judges have been superseded by state of the art, pan-continental technology that involves all the 125 million viewers watching at home. It’s a very different show indeed. Back in 1957, Lys Assia attempted to defend her Eurovision crown and this year Germany’s Lena will become the third artist taking a crack at the same challenge.

  • International Journal Vol.38.1 TOURIST VALORIZATION AS the BASIS for MANAGING TOURIST DESTINATIONS
KNOWLEDGE – International Journal Vol.38.1 TOURIST VALORIZATION AS THE BASIS FOR MANAGING TOURIST DESTINATIONS Michael Risteski Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality - Ohrid, University St. Kliment Ohridski – Bitola, Republic of N. Macedonia, [email protected] Abstract: The concept of tourist valorization is only partially and sporadically examined on the territory of the Republic of N. Macedonia. Furthermore, managing tourist areas by specific destination management organizations has not yet been implemented on a satisfactory level. In such conditions of tourism development, the idea developed for writing this paper. From this emerged the need for expanding the concept of tourist valorization in the domestic scientific and professional field. This is made possible through a comprehensive, substantial and systematic analysis of the tourist valorization process in the function of improving the management of tourist areas. The basic subject of this research paper consists of determining the place, role, function, types and approaches of tourist valorization in the processes of managing tourist areas. Thus, this paper has a dual purpose. On the one hand, it should contribute to the enrichment of the scientific thought with contemporary concepts and approaches for tourist valorization. On the other hand, the results and knowledge of the paper should be in function of improving the current destination management and intensifying the level of tourism development in a given tourist space. The territory in question is the Ohrid tourist region which is also the touristically most developed in the country. This paper presents the results of the doctoral thesis by the author in which the research process through all its phases was performed with the use of a conceptual theoretical and methodological framework, which consisted of both cabinet and empirical analysis.
