Acrocephalus 31 (147): 175−179, 2010 A Milestone on the Road to Natura 2000 Mejnik na poti k Naturi 2000 The publication “Important Bird Areas of Macedonia: Sites of Global and European Importance” provides a fascinating insight into the natural and cultural heritage of the country. The approved list of sites now includes a wide variety of landscapes hosting bird species that have become rare or threatened in many parts of Europe. Very important is the fact that only about 21% of the national protected area network overlaps the Important Bird Areas of Macedonia. Now an assessment of the natural assets of Macedonia is available for the first time, based on a systematic approach using the international criteria developed by BirdLife International for the selection of sites under the EU Birds Directive. The first results indicate where the country hosts areas of European and even global importance, where urgent conservation measures are needed, and are excellent guidelines for the rural development and tourism. A wide range of political commitments within the European Union is aimed at preserving ecosystems and biodiversity, with various species protection provisions as well as Special Protection Areas (SPAs) identified under the Birds Directive and Sites of Community Importance (SCIs) identified under the Habitats Directive, both incorporated into the Natura 2000 (N2000) network. The publication of the “Important Bird Areas of Macedonia” prepared by the Macedonian Ecological Society (MES) as a national representative of the BirdLife International’s partnership is the first systematic assessment of Macedonia’s sites based on the internationally recognized criteria to implement the Birds Directive.

  • The Internal Macedonian-Adrianople Revolutionary Organization and the Idea for Autonomy for Macedonia and Adrianople Thrace
The Internal Macedonian-Adrianople Revolutionary Organization and the Idea for Autonomy for Macedonia and Adrianople Thrace, 1893-1912 By Martin Valkov Submitted to Central European University Department of History In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Supervisor: Prof. Tolga Esmer Second Reader: Prof. Roumen Daskalov CEU eTD Collection Budapest, Hungary 2010 “Copyright in the text of this thesis rests with the Author. Further copies made in accordance with such instructions may not be made without the written permission of the Author.” CEU eTD Collection ii Abstract The current thesis narrates an important episode of the history of South Eastern Europe, namely the history of the Internal Macedonian-Adrianople Revolutionary Organization and its demand for political autonomy within the Ottoman Empire. Far from being “ancient hatreds” the communal conflicts that emerged in Macedonia in this period were a result of the ongoing processes of nationalization among the different communities and the competing visions of their national projects. These conflicts were greatly influenced by inter-imperial rivalries on the Balkans and the combination of increasing interference of the Great European Powers and small Balkan states of the Ottoman domestic affairs. I argue that autonomy was a multidimensional concept covering various meanings white-washed later on into the clean narratives of nationalism and rebirth.

  • Social Conflicts, Changing Identities and Everyday Strategies of Survival in Macedonia on the Eve of the Collapse of Ottoman Central Power (1903–1912)
Gábor Demeter and Krisztián Csaplár-Degovics Social Conflicts, Changing Identities and Everyday Strategies of Survival in Macedonia on the Eve of the Collapse of Ottoman Central Power (1903–1912) Summary The present study aims to identify certain social dividing lines, fractures and motivations that accelerated the rise in political murders and everyday violence after the Ilinden Uprising. The contribution of foreign intervention (including both the attempts of the great powers to settle the question and the propagandistic activity of neighboring small states) and local traditions (customs) to the nature and extent of violence are also investigated. The authors will also consider the shift in the support policy of neighboring small states from construction to destruction—including the issues of economic benefit and local acceptance at a time when selection of an identity no longer entailed only advantages, but imposed threats as well. During this period the boundaries between the various types of violent action triggered either by religious and school conflict or customs gradually faded, while Chetas became highly organized and self-subsistent through cultivation and smuggling of opium and tobacco and expropriation of state and private property. In order to trace the territorial and cultural patterns of violence as well as specific and general motives, the authors conducted a statistical analysis of quantitative data regarding victims and perpetrators. The study is based on the comparison of Austrian and Bulgarian archival sources in order to check the reliability of data. The study area—the Sanjak of Skopje in Kosovo—is suitable for examining problems related to the birth of modern nations: the ethnic and religious diversity of this sanjak makes it possible to investigate both the tensions that existed within and between the Eastern Orthodox and Muslim religious communities as well as the impact of small states with territorial pretensions on this region.

Table of Contents Archbishop Jovan sentenced to 3 years in prison, all Church property confiscated, 18 others sentenced Questionable involvement of the state in the internal conflict of Macedonian Orthodoxy Archbishop Jovan sentenced to 3 years in prison, all Church property confiscated, 18 others sentenced Center 9 (02.07. 2013) - On 2 July 2013, the First Municipal Court of Skopje, Macedonia, under the leadership of Judge Ivica Stefanovski, sentenced the Serbian Orthodox Church (SOC) Archbishop of Ohrid and Metropoletan of Skopje Jovan (Vraniskovski) to three years in prison. The judge also ordered that all property of the Archbishopric of Ohird is to be confiscated. Bishops Marko of Bregalnica and David of Stobi and additional 14 priests, monks and nuns were all sentenced to two years and then suspended to five years of probation. Among sentenced are Archbishops mother and sister as well. All convicts were sentenced in the case initiated by the Macedonian Orthodox Church (MOC) that is not canonically recognized by any canonical Orthodox Church in the world, and of which all the accused were not members. The MOC does not have a status of the state church in Macedonia, however, de faccto extols all the power as if would be. The Archbishop Jovan was arrested on 12 December 2011 and since then was held in Suto Orizari prison, among the criminals and other serious law offenders. In May 2012 Macedonian police has arrested monks, nuns and believers: This is the sixth imprisonment of Archbishop Jovan in the last 10 years. At its annual conference in May 2013, all the Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church issued an appeal to all democratic institutions in the country and internationally to help release Archbishop Jovan who is in prison under torture, as stated in a release by Bishop Irinej, the SOC port-parole officer.
