OCCASIONAL PAPER N. 8 TTHHEE HHIISSTTOORRYY OOFF TTHHEE MMAACCEEDDOONNIIAANN TTEEXXTTIILLEE IINNDDUUSSTTRRYY WWIITTHH AA FFOOCCUUSS OONN SSHHTTIIPP Date: November 29th, 2005 Place: Skopje, Macedonia Introduction- the Early Beginnings and Developments Until 1945 The growth of the Macedonian textile sector underwent diverse historical and economic phases. This industry is among the oldest on the territory of Macedonia, and passed through all the stages of development. At the end of the 19th century, Macedonia was a territory with numerous small towns with a developed trade, especially in craftsmanship (zanaetchistvo). The majority of the population lived in rural areas, Macedonia characterized as an agricultural country, where most of the inhabitants satisfied their needs through own production of food. The introduction and the further development of the textile industry in Macedonia were mainly induced by the needs of the Ottoman army for various kinds of clothing and uniforms. Another reason for the emerging of the textile sector was to satisfy the needs of the citizens in the urban areas. An important factor for the advancement of this industry at that time was the developed farming, cattle breeding in particular. (stocharstvo). The first textile enterprises were established in the 1880‟s in the villages in the region of Bitola – Dihovo, Magarevo, Trnovo, and their main activity was production of woolen products. Only a small number of cotton products were produced in (zanaetciski) craftsmen workshops. The growth of textiles in this region was natural as Bitola, at that time also known as Manastir, was an important economic and cultural center in the European part of Turkey.[i] At that time the owners and managers of the textile industry were businessmen with sufficient capital to invest their money in industrial production. -

On the basis of article 65 of the Law on Real Estate Cadastre („Official Gazette of Republic of Macedonia”, no. 55/13), the Steering Board of the Agency for Real Estate Cadastre has enacted REGULATION FOR THE MANNER OF CHANGING THE BOUNDARIES OF THE CADASTRE MUNICIPALITIES AND FOR DETERMINING THE CADASTRE MUNICIPALITIES WHICH ARE MAINTAINED IN THE CENTER FOR REC SKOPJE AND THE SECTORS FOR REAL ESTATE CADASTRE IN REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA Article 1 This Regulation hereby prescribes the manner of changing the boundaries of the cadastre municipalities, as well as the determining of the cadastre municipalities which are maintained in the Center for Real Estate Cadastre – Skopje and the Sectors for Real Estate Cadastre in Republic of Macedonia. Article 2 (1) For the purpose of changing the boundaries of the cadastre municipalities, the Government of Republic of Macedonia shall enact a decision. (2) The decision stipulated in paragraph (1) of this article shall be enacted by the Government of Republic of Macedonia at the proposal of the Agency for Real Estate Cadastre (hereinafter referred to as: „„the Agency„„). (3) The Agency is to submit the proposal stipulated in paragraph (2) of this article along with a geodetic report for survey of the boundary line, produced under ex officio procedure by experts employed at the Agency. Article 3 (1) The Agency is to submit a proposal decision for changing the boundaries of the cadastre municipalities in cases when, under a procedure of ex officio, it is identified that the actual condition/status of the boundaries of the cadastre municipalities is changed and does not comply with the boundaries drawn on the cadastre maps. -

421 Chapter Six: Complex Identities THE MACEDONIAN EXPERIENCE of the late nineteenth century was not merely Christian and European. To this point we have assumed populations that were relatively homogenous in their ethnic, occupational and religious character. However, nineteenth century Macedonians were rather more diverse than these categories would suggest. A significant minority of the population (perhaps 10-15 per cent) were Turkish Muslims or Macedonian Muslims. The slow process of an evolving Macedonian identity was made the more complicated by these alternative realities. 6.1 Contrast between typical Macedonian Muslim village (Reka district) and typical Macedonian Christian village (Bitola region) Churches and mosques CHURCHES WERE FOUND throughout the Dolna Reka Christian villages. Some were hundreds of years old, such as the church in Gari built in the thirteenth century. Churches generally remained standing in mixed Macedonian Christian - Macedonian Muslim villages. However, in the case of Rostusha, the fifteenth century church Sveti Bogorojca was transformed into a mosque after the partial Islamicisation of the village. In exclusively Macedonian Muslim villages there were few churches standing in 1912. Usually they were left unattended and slowly deteriorated (this could take place over a period of hundreds of years) whilst the fate of others remains unknown. In religiously mixed villages, particularly when the Muslim element was dominant, a mosque was generally constructed in the village. It is not clear whether mosques were -

Among the precious example of political consciousness and sacrifice in the great and heroic struggle our future generations do not need to have regard to the distant past but can learn from the actions of youths involved in the living reality of the great liberation struggle. The publication of the series “Unforgotten” represents a program of the Municipal Council of the Union of the fighters of the NOB – Bitola. The series is comprised of many publications of famous people and events from the recent revolutionary past of Bitola and its environs. People who in the Liberation battle and the socialist revolution showed themselves to be heroes and their names and their achievements are celebrated in the “Unforgotten” series by the people. -

NINA Special Report (NINA Temahefte) As the name suggests, special reports deal with special subjects. Special reports are produced as required and the series ranges widely: from systematic identification keys to information on impor- tant problem areas in society. NINA special reports are usually given a popular scientific form with more weight on illustrations than a NINA report. NINA Factsheet (NINA Fakta) Factsheets have as their goal to make NINA’s research results quickly and easily accessible to the general public. The are sent to the press, civil society organisations, nature management at all lev- els, politicians, and other special interests. Fact sheets give a short presentation of some of our most important research themes.
