(Voltaire 1838: 808) Een masterproef is het eindpunt van een reis. Het is de bestemming van een tocht die ik vier jaar geleden ben begonnen. De tocht bracht me van de wrok van Achilles naar het gekreun van Saskia De Coster. Van de mooiste en soepelste hexameters van Vergilius naar een subliem hoofdstuk van Jennifer Egan weergegeven in powerpoint. James Joyce deed me proza lezen alsof het poëzie was, bij anderen leek poëzie dan weer op proza. De tocht bracht me tot in de hemel met Dante, liet me onbewust pagina’s lang in de lucht zweven met Multatuli, en bracht me weer neer tot aan de drempel van de hel met Ronsard. Af en toe week ik van het pad af, hield ik halt bij Antonioni en Hitchcock, maar steeds keerde ik terug. Uit liefde voor de literatuur. Iets grijpt me aan in boeken. Keer op keer. Misschien is het wel het vuur waarover Voltaire spreekt? Het vuur dat wordt overgedragen door het gesprek met de tekst. Dat in je brandt. Dat je wil delen, moet delen met anderen. Een masterproef is dan ook niet alleen het eindpunt van een reis, het is de vrucht van een gesprek. Gesprekken heb ik op deze tocht veel gehad. Steeds was mijn promotor prof. dr. Jürgen Pieters bereid om met me in dialoog te treden. Tegen het einde van deze tocht zat ik bijna wekelijks op zijn bureau om te praten over wat ik geschreven had. Hij gaf me de nodige kritiek, zette me aan om te herschrijven wat ik al had, en raade me werken aan die hij op een wonderbaarlijke wijze steeds wist terug te vinden tussen die berg boeken op zijn bureau. Ook mijn copromotor dr. Ben De Bruyn heeft veel met me gesproken. Hij was kritisch, heel kritisch, maar steeds met de allerbeste bedoelingen. Hij zette me aan om door te schrijven, om die belangrijke deadline te halen. En met succes. Zonder deze gesprekspartners zou deze masterproef er heel wat anders hebben uitgezien. Beide verdienen dan ook mijn oprechte dank. Ik bedank ook graag de vele mensen die mijn tocht gedurende deze vier jaar aangenaam hebben gemaakt. In de eerste plaats mijn broer, omdat ik deze tocht zonder de vele koffiepauzes nooit had kunnen vervolledigen. Daarnaast ook mijn ouders, die ontelbaar veel meer verdienen dan slechts deze ene zin. En natuurlijk ook de vele vrienden die ik ben tegengekomen op deze tocht. But its recovery permanently changed the landscape of the world. (Greenblatt 2011: 218) 1 Inleiding Het is crisis. De financiële middelen voor het hoger onderwijs zijn beperkt en dreigen door de huidige Europese schuldencrisis niet onmiddellijk toe te nemen. De toekomst van het hoger onderwijs ziet er somber uit. In het Verenigd Koninkrijk werd daarom in 2010 geopperd om het inschrijvingsgeld aan de instellingen voor het hoger onderwijs bruusk te verhogen. Op dat moment studeerde ik als uitwisselingsstudent aan de University of Kent in Canterbury. Ik heb de gevolgen zelf meegemaakt. Een golf van protest rolde over het land. Studenten bezetten wekenlang universiteitsgebouwen en de toegang tot de hoofdbibliotheek van de campus in Canterbury werd zelfs enkele dagen geblokkeerd. De universiteit lag even lam. Canterbury was niet de enige universiteit in opstand. In het hele land werden campussen bezet en staakten professoren uit solidariteit hun lessen. In november 2010 kwamen tienduizenden studenten samen in Londen om hun ongenoegen te uiten met de besparingen op het onderwijs. Het was het grootste studentenprotest in twintig jaar (Davis et al. 2010). Kop van Jut waren de conservatieve Tories die de besparingen voorstelden. Studenten bezetten het hoofdkwartier van de Tories, beklommen de daken van kantoorgebouwen en banken, en maakten amok in de straten van Londen. De betoging ontaardde zo in een grimmige strijd tussen studenten, oproerkraaiers en ordediensten. De betoging betekende het hoogtepunt van het studentenprotest. Kerstmis naderde en de studentenprotesten namen geleidelijk aan af. De rust keerde terug in heel wat universiteiten, maar niet in Canterbury. Een aantal studenten bleef volharden en hield een universiteitsgebouw bezet. De bezetactie aan de University of Kent was de langste van alle studentenprotesten. Hoewel de universiteit het studentenprotest steunde en openlijk genegen was, veroordeelde ze tegelijkertijd de actie als illegaal en wou ze niet weten van een verlaging in inschrijvingsgelden (Pidd 2010). Dame Julia Goodfellow, de vicekanselier van de universiteit, ondertekende zelfs een open brief aan het parlement met de vraag om desondanks alle protesten de inschrijvingsgelden te verhogen (Smith et al. 2010). De University of Kent leek net als de Romeinse god Janus wel twee gezichten te hebben. Een vermoeden dat toenam wanneer de bezetters beweerden dat gedurende de ijskoude kerstvakantie – de campus lag bedolven onder een dik pak sneeuw – de verwarming opzettelijk werd afgelegd (Pidd 2010). Ondanks deze erbarmelijke omstandigheden waren de studenten bereid om op te komen voor hun idealen en Kerstmis en Nieuwjaar ver weg van hun familie te vieren. Op 5 januari om twee uur ‘s middags kwam er een officieel einde aan de studentenprotesten in het 2 Verenigd Koninkrijk. Uitgeput, koud en hongerig verlieten de zes overgebleven studenten het universiteitsgebouw (Pidd 2011). De studenten hadden de strijd verloren. De verhoogde inschrijvingsgelden werden goedgekeurd in het House of Commons. Studeren aan de universiteiten in het Verenigd Koninkrijk werd meer dan dubbel zo duur en zou een undergraduate student alleen al zo’n £9000 per jaar aan inschrijvingsgeld kosten (Sedghi & Shepherd 2011). Het verzet was gebroken. Het hoger onderwijs staat onder druk, en de humane wetenschappen nog het meest. Ook in Vlaanderen ziet de toekomst voor de humane wetenschappen er allesbehalve rooskleurig uit. ‘Verdubbel het inschrijvingsgeld’ (Ysebaert 2011), roepen sommige stemmen in de samenleving. De humane wetenschappen worden verweten geen bijdrage te leveren aan de economie en moeten dus niet langer gesubsidieerd worden door de maatschappij. Jongeren worden aangespoord om arbeidsmarktgerichte studies te ondernemen en de “nutteloze” humane wetenschappen te laten voor wat ze zijn: een zinkend schip. Als voorzitter van de Modern Language Association ontging Stephen Greenblatt deze tendens ook niet en daarom vroeg hij in zijn presidentiële toespraak aandacht voor de toekomst van de humane

Even the most tentative answer to this question should include the fact that Roth’s concerns in Juden auf Wanderschaft , including the forcible displacement of a people and their subsequent dispersal throughout the world, and Roth’s suggestion of an inherent tyranny in Western culture, find remarkable resonance in our contemporary reality. Global migrations and Westernization inform curre nt research, not just on identity politics, but also on topics that seek to move beyond or reinvigorate discussions of identity —topics such as mobility, diaspora, and migration.3 Written by one who was both an assimilated Viennese and a Galician Jew born i n the eastern -most reaches of the Hapsburg Empire, Roth’s work offers an extraordinarily complex and informative perspective on issues that remain topical today. Nevertheless, Roth’s Juden auf Wanderschaft is rarely analyzed in a manner reflecting this complexity. Most reviewers, in celebratory response to the work’s themes, see it as a poignant declaration of love for the vanishing eastern Jewish culture with which Roth came of age.

    INVOKING THE PAST: THE CULTURAL POLITICS OF LAO LITERATURE, 1941-1975 A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts by Chairat Polmuk May 2014 © 2014 Chairat Polmuk ABSTRACT This thesis examines the role of Lao literature in the formation of Lao national identity from 1945 to 1975. In the early 1940s, Lao literary modernity emerged within the specific politico-cultural context of the geopolitical conflict between French Laos and Thailand. As a result, Lao literature and culture became increasingly politicized in colonial cultural policy to counter Thai expansionist nationalism that sought to incorporate Laos into Thai territorial and cultural space. I argue that Lao literature, which was institutionalized by Franco-Lao cultural campaigns between 1941 and 1945, became instrumental to the invention of Lao tradition and served as a way to construct a cultural boundary between Laos and Thailand. Precolonial Lao literature was revitalized as part of Lao national culture; its content and form were also instrumentalized to distinguish Lao identity from that of the Thai. Lao literature was distinguished by the uses of the Lao language, poetic forms, and classical conventions rooted in what was defined as Laos’s own literary culture. In addition, Lao prose fiction, which was made possible in Laos with the rise of print capitalism and an emergent literate social class, offered another mode of “invented tradition.” Despite its presumed novelty in terms of form and content, early Lao prose fiction was highly conventional in its representation of idealized traditional society in opposition to a problematic modern one.

    366 INTERLITT ERA RIA 2019, 24/2: 366–379 KETURA KIENĖ Lithuanian Literature and Shakespeare: Several Cases of Reception EGLĖ KETURAKIENĖ Abstract. The article is based on the reception theory by Hans Robert Jauss and analyses how Shakespeare’s works were read, evaluated and interpreted in Lithuanian literature in the 19th to 21th centuries. Some traces of Shakespeare’s works might be observed in letters by Povilas Višinskis and Zemaitė where Shakespearean drama is indicated as a canon of writing to be followed. It is interesting to note that Lithuanian exodus drama by Kostas Ostrauskas is based on the correspondence between Višinskis and Zemaitė. The characters of the play introduce the principles of the drama of the absurd. Gell’s concept of distributed personhood offered by S. Greenblatt is very suitable for analysing modern Lithuanian literature that seeks a creative relationship with Shakespeare’s works. The concept maintains that characters of particular dramas can break loose from the defined interpretative framework. Lithuanian exodus drama reinterprets Shakespeare’s works and characters. The plays by Ostrauskas and Algirdas Landsbergis explore the variety of human existence and language, the absurd character of the artist, meaningless human existence and the critique of totalitarianism. Modern Lithuanian poetry interprets Shakespeare‘s works so that they serve as a way to contemplate the theme of modern writing, meaningless human existence, the tragic destiny of an individual and Lithuania, miserable human nature, the playful nature of literature, the clownish mask of the poet, the existential silence of childhood, the topic of life as a theatrical performance, the everyday experience of modern women in theatre.

    Recuperating the Archive: Anecdotal Evidence and Questions of ‘‘Historical Realism’’ Sonja Laden Porter Institute for Poetics and Semiotics, Tel Aviv Abstract This essay argues that the critical practice of New Historicism is a mode of ‘‘literary’’ history whose ‘‘literariness’’ lies in bringing imaginative operations closer to the surface of nonliterary texts and briefly describes some of the practice’s lead- ing literary features and strategies. I further point out that the ostensible ‘‘arbitrary connectedness’’ (Cohen 1987) of New Historicist writing is in fact aesthetically coded and patterned, both stylistically and in terms of potential semantic correspondences between various representations of the past. I then move on to address the ques- tion of why anecdotal evidence features centrally and has come to play a key role in New Historicist writing. Here, I contend that, as components of narrative discourse, anecdotal materials are central in enabling New Historicists to make discernible on the surface of their discourse procedures of meaning production typically found in literary forms. In particular, anecdotal materials are the fragmented ‘‘stuff ’’ of his- torical narratization: they facilitate the shaping of historical events into stories and more or less formalized ‘‘facts.’’ This essay examines how the New Historicist anec- dote remodels historical reality ‘‘as it might have been,’’ reviving the way history is experienced and concretely reproduced by contemporary readers of literary history. Finally, the essay confirms how the textual reproduction of anecdotal evidence also enables the New Historicist mode of ‘‘literary’’ history to secure its links to literary artifacts, literary scholarship, and conventional historical discourse.     Honors English 12 Ms. Ferrone Honors English 12 Summer Reading Assignment One of the objectives of Honors English 12 is that you will learn to analyze literature from various cultures – including our own – in order to consider abstract ideas about values, beliefs, priorities, and cultural systems. You will compare and contrast these cultures based on these aspects. You will be expected to open your mind toward others’ views, to see things from unique perspectives, and to challenge your own perceptions. Your summer reading assignment reflects these goals. As students entering your final year of high school English, I expect you are already reading all the time. For that reason, and the fact that it is summer, I want to leave some of the choice of what you read this summer up to you. All I ask is that you read something contemporary and of literary value (either fiction or non-fiction). What does that mean, you ask? Novels and books of literary merit are often identified by scholars and writers who use myriad criteria by which to judge whether a book is notable in some way. These people consider aspects like the style and quality of writing, the nature of the topic and themes, and the originality of the work. One of the sources that feature notable contemporary books of literary merit is The New York Times. Each week The Times features a list of bestselling hardcover fiction and ​ non-fiction. This is one of the lists from which you could choose a summer reading book for ​ this year. You are not limited to choosing only from this week’s list.
