School Liaison Bulletin - Connect2college School Liaison Bulletin - Connect2College Welcome back to The Manchester College School Liaison Bulletin – Connect2College, we hope you had an enjoyable half-term break. The bulletin is filled with information from the C ollege to keep careers advisers and school staff updated and exciting competitions and activities for your learners to take part in. FOR SCHOOL STAFF ***Connect2College Programme*** We are extremely proud to have now launched our brand new Connect2College programme, a resource for all schools to access. The purpose of this programme is to primarily support your year 11s and maybe also be beneficial to your year 10 pupils. By creating this programme we want to ensure their journey from school to the College is as smooth as possible. The programme includes some useful resources, curriculum specific activities and quizzes for pupils to get involved in from home. The booklet also links back to a wide range of additional resources that we have just launched on our main website and would encourage your pupils to access: https://www.tmc.ac.uk/student-life/connect2college We hope you find it useful and would ask you to share it with your pupils. If you have any questions or queries please contact the School Liaison Team here at The Manchester College. ***Greater Manchester Combined Authority Q&A*** On Tuesday 2nd June and 16th June, to support the Great Science Share, GMCA are hosting a live Q&A panel for young people with Greater Manchester employers whose roles are within the sustainability industry or are addressing the climate emergency. Aimed at a KS3 audience, young people will hear from a range of different panellists, including Electricity North West, Engie, and the Hydrogen Fuel Innovation Centre, about their roles, career pathways and top tips for how young people could enter a similar role or industry. Young people will have the opportunity to submit questions to the panellists about their role, career pathway and careers in sustainability within Greater Manchester. Both the sessions will have four different panellists from different organisations and we would encourage you to sign up for both of them. ***BRAND NEW CREATIVE & DIGITAL MEDIA COURSES*** The Manchester College are proud to announce a new partnership with Pie Analysis, a full-service agency specialising in Digital Marketing, Influencer Marketing and Ecommerce. The partnership will see the Manchester based agency work hands-on, with the college's team of creative and digital media tutors to co-create two courses that will offer upskill opportunities in digital marketing and content creation for social media, as well as graphic design and media buying. • Digital Business with Social Media Marketing in partnership with Pie Analysis • Content Creation and Digital Film Production in partnership with Pie Analysis The two-year courses aim to be the first of their kind at the college, with the focus being on social media platforms. Business students can expect to learn about social media marketing & how influencers are changing the face of marketing & TV & Film students will be learning how to create content & videos for use on platforms such as YouTube. Continue down the Kingsway part of the A34 until you reach Tesco and Parrs Wood Entertainment Centre (with Cineworld and Chiquito). Just after the cinema at the next set of major traffic lights take the left fork (note, this is not the turning into the car park but the road after that). Then turn left again almost straight away at the next set of traffic lights and follow the road around, with the cinema complex car park to your left and Parrs Wood High School to your right. You’ll come to a right hand turn with a sign saying ‘no exit’. Turn right here and follow the road past the basketball courts round to the back of the sports hall, until you arrive at the rear car park. Directions from the South Join the M56 northwards towards Manchester. Be sure to turn off at Junction 3 to stay on the M56. Depart at Junction 1 onto the A34. At the next set of major traffic lights (about ½ mile) turn right. This is just before Parrs Wood Entertainment Centre. Turn left shortly after at the next traffic lights and follow the road around, with the cinema complex car park to your left and Parrs Wood High School to your right.     WHALLEY RANGE 11-18 HIGH SCHOOL A Specialist College for Business, Enterprise & Sport ART WORKSHOPS PARTNERSHIP Students at Heald Place, Manley Park and St. Mary’s Primary NEWS Schools were treated to exciting and hugely enjoyable Art Workshops with Sissy Rooney of Streetstyle Surgery. Along NEWSNEWS with Sissy’s excellent guidance each student was provided with a T shirt, stencils, paints and pens and asked to design and customise their unique and individual T – shirt. The students were absolutely engrossed and engaged in the hands-on activity from beginning to end and were equally excited to wear, promote and parade their creative fashion skills for fellow students. Well done to all the students who took part in the workshops. The comments made by the students reflect their great sense of satisfaction and achievement. Rozina – age 10 “I enjoyed spraying and designing because it was fun and they let you get straight on with it as they show you step by step so you understand. I learnt not to throw things away and to think about if it can be used again to make something else out of it”. Aumar – age 10 “I loved it, it was the best thing I have ever done in my whole life”. Arooj – age 10 MATHS “The workshop was great! I learnt how to use spray paint COMPETITION properly and safely and a lot of fashion tips.     Sutton Trust US Programme Participants admitted to US universities in 2018-19 Tito Adesanya - Columbia University London (St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School) Tito is a Londoner and is passionate about improving the lives of others through STEM. Along with initiating a globally-operating start-up that teaches women and minorities to code, he started a club which aims to help disadvantaged youngsters build drones and rockets. He’s a maker, a passion which has won him awards at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles for a wind turbine he built. Tito captains athletics, plays in the first rugby and basketball teams and spends his free time doing parkour. He filled up his summer with internships and research placements at Airbus and Cambridge, and robotics courses at universities like UPenn. Tito was first drawn to US institutions because of their greater focus on the person behind the grades, but was then captivated by the opportunity to be immersed in the culture and take minors in areas like Operations Research, alongside Mechanical Engineering. Nikolas Aguilar – Princeton University London (King's College London Mathematics School) Born and raised in London by a Catalan mother, Nikolas has an international outlook. Being the Founder of ‘Culture Club’ at his specialist-mathematics sixth form, he opened doors for conversations about the backgrounds and cultures students come from. A keen economist and mathematician, Nik has taken part in summer schools at J.P. Morgan and LSE whilst getting work experience in the finance at Sky HQ. His passion and success in track and field has continued into his passion for beach volleyball by playing competitively across London.

If you are applying for a secondary school place after 31 August 2014 and your child is already attending secondary school, please ensure that you discuss your transfer with your child’s current school. The school will need to complete section D of your application form before the admission service can process your application. If you are applying for a secondary school place and your child is currently out of school, please complete the application form enclosed with this booklet. We would advise you to indicate your preference for at least three schools on your application form. It may also be useful for you to contact the school you are interested in applying to, to check their admission arrangements. Further details on each school’s admission arrangements can be found at www.manchester.gov.uk/admissions. The admission arrangements for Manchester community schools are detailed on pages 4–6 of this booklet.
