News and Notes page 11 1 Weekly Polls The week eight rankings welcome the Harris Poll to the Weekly Polls page. As you have read below all season, the Harris Poll is instrumental to the BCS rankings, which will come out this Sunday. Week seven was our first “upset week” as four ranked teams lost to an unranked opponent. Stanford and Georgia fell from the top 10 after losses, with Florida State and LSU climbing up the rankings. UCLA is making its first appearance in the top ten since 2005, but the polls belong to the SEC this week. For the first time ever, eight teams from one conference appear in the AP Poll, and the SEC, who holds the last seven national champions, now can claim that honor as well.

7 Football 101 Pre- Recognition

My name is Doug Ingels, and I’m the BCS intern in the media department for the Rose Bowl Game. I spent the past five years working for the Wisconsin Badger football team while I attended college. During that time, I was at nearly every practice and on the sideline for 63 games, wearing a headset, working with the coaches and learning the ins and outs of college football. I noticed there are many things overlooked by people who haven’t had the same opportunities I’ve had, but I’m here to change that. Allow me to share with you some behind the scenes intel about the game we all love so much.

When watching football, you probably have seen offenses line up in all kinds of formations and the defenses running around to change their alignment and wonder what’s going on? The defense has to read and react to the offense during the play, but actually, about 75% of the defenses job happens before the ball is snapped.

1. Personnel – The first thing a defense needs to know is what players the offense will have on the field. As I described in the week five Rose Bowletin, personnel tells the defense how many backs and tight ends are on the field, thereby limiting the number of formations they could line up in.

2. Formation – The next thing defenses have to recognize is the offensive formation. How many people are in the backfield determines gaps for lineman and , where the tight is aligned determines the running strength. The number of receivers or potential receivers on each side of the formation determines the passing strength.

3. Alignments – Next is to recognize how the offensive players are aligned. For receivers, certain route combinations are easier to predict based on where the receivers line up. For example, if receivers line up “stacked” or very close together, good defensive backs can expect a “stacked route”, which often involves the receivers cross at some point in their route running. Running backs can also give away the type of play by alignment. When in a shotgun formation, a running back can align next to the quarterback on three levels. Level zero is when he is standing directly even with the quarterback. :evel one is slightly behind the depth of the quarterback. Level two is offset a yard or more behind the quarterback. With a back at level one, a running play like a stretch (wide run to the outside) or zone read (quarterback has the option to hand it off or keep it and run) are common. At level two, a running play would more commonly be a power or counter play to allow time for the pulling guard.

4. Motion – Many offenses use motion to disguise their play or expose the defense’s play. If an offense player goes in mo- tion, and a defensive player follows them across the formation, it likely means the defense is in some form of man-to-man coverage. If the defense as a group makes a shift, it likely means the defense is in a zone coverage.

Then, the ball is snapped and it’s all about reaction time, strength and the will to win. Rose Bowl Game Fun Fact Cal Tech Pranks Twice in Rose Bowl Game history, Pasadena’s own California Insti- tute of Technology has used The Granddaddy of Them All for their mischievous antics.

In 1961, the Washington Huskies were playing the Minnesota Gold- en Gophers. The Husky cheerleaders had a card stunt set up for the Washington fans, so that the crowd would create a giant mosaic when everyone held up their cards. There were 15 card stunts, and the 14th went a little different than planned.

Cal Tech students had replaced the instructions for the 14th stunt with their own, and when the Washington fans held their cards up, Cal Tech could be read clear as day.

The second prank took place during the 1984 Rose Bowl Game, featuring UCLA and Illinois. With the game in hand late in the fourth quarter, several Cal Tech students changed the scoreboard to read “CalTech 38, MIT 9,” in an attempt for Cal Tech students to prove their superiority over their rivals out east, the Massachusetts Institute for Technology. 8 Rose Bowl Game All-Century Nominees 1940’s FINALISTS FOR ROSE BOWL GAME ALL-CENTURY CLASS INCLUDE CHAPPUIS, GILMER AND TRIPPI , and have been nominated as finalists for the Rose Bowl Game All-Century Class as representatives from the 1940’s. The candidates, as voted by an esteemed panel from the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), are the fourth of a series of names that will be unveiled each Sunday throughout the remainder of the college football regular season.

In commemoration of the 100th Rose Bowl Game, the All-Century Class will highlight and honor great players and coach- es throughout the history of The Granddaddy of Them All.

University of Michigan’s star halfback, Bob Chappuis, rushed the Wolverines to a 49-0 victory in the Game against USC, capping a perfect season for the maize and blue. Chap- puis, a member of the notorious ‘Mad Magicians,’ set two Rose Bowl Game records with 279 total offensive yards and 14 pass completions. During the season leading up to his New Year’s Day Pasadena appearance, he set the Big Nine offensive record with 1,395 total rushing and passing yards. His performance in 1947 stunned sports writers across the nation, earning him All-America honors from the Associated Press, Grantland Rice, United Press International, New York Telegram and Tribune. Chappuis was inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in 1992.

Harry Gilmer was an offensive arsenal for the – spending time throughout his career at halfback, quarterback, punter and kickoff returner. While his arm was expected to test USC in the 1946 Rose Bowl Game, it was his running ability that sunk the Trojans. Voted Player of the Game, Gilmer carried the ball 16 times for 116 yards and one as the Crimson Tide rolled over USC, 34-14, amassing 351 yards to USC’s 41. An All-American and SEC player of the year in 1945, Gilmer’s 16 career remain among the highest total in ‘Bama histo- ry. Gilmer was inducted in the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1973, the College Football Hall of Fame in 1993 and the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in 1995.

In 1943, halfback Charley Trippi led the to a 9-0 Rose Bowl Game victory over UCLA, highlighting an 11-1 season and consensus national championship. Plagued by inju- ry, Heisman winner watched from the sidelines as Trippi played both offense and defense for 58 minutes, which was unprecedented for the times. Trippi carried the ball 25 times for 130 yards, earning Most Valuable Player honors. A Maxwell Award winner in 1946, he went on to play nine seasons in the NFL and was elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1968, the College Football Hall of Fame in 1959 and the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 1965. Trippi was also a 1991 Rose Bowl Hall of Fame inductee.

The FWAA voting committee will select one Rose Bowl Game representative from each decade to comprise the All-Cen- tury Class. In addition, one overall player and one overall coach will be highlighted at a press conference on Selection Sunday, which will take place on December 8, 2013, in Pasadena.
