The narrative of whiteness begins in a void, an Wabsence, and myth. In many creation myths, including Genesis and Hesiod’s Theogony, order is wrested from undifferentiated chaos and dark- ness, and order is imposed by a divine enlightenment, a god/monarch who creates light by fiat. “In the beginning . the earth was without form and void and darkness was on the face of the deep.” And by creating light, the god/monarch gives meaning and hierarchy to the world. Whiteness, when it is used to describe skin color, emerges in the language from the Dark Ages and from a multiplicity of ethnicities. A “white race” emerges into a proto- enlightenment and a proto-capitalism and into the uses of pigment. One way to deconstruct the notion of white supremacy is to parse the signification of the word “white.” In order to interrogate the politics of melanin we must confront what James Baldwin called “the lie that is whiteness.” We need to situate this signifier, this whiteness, in myth, ontology, aesthetics, metaphor, and ideology. In a more mundane physical description, white enters the world as light which is parsed by a prism that fractures white light into a spectrum – the colors of the rainbow. Each color of the spectrum vibrates on a different wavelength from infrared to ultraviolet. White and black have no wavelength. White contains and reflects all the colors; black absorbs all light and color.

The goals of this work are twofold. First, this research aims to propose a comprehensive definition of hate speeCh by leveraging the linguistiC body of knowledge in conjunction with insights from legal sCholarship, cross-disCiplinary aCademiC work, lexiCography, and non-aCademiC perspeCtives colleCted through a two-part survey.   • Targeting White Supremacy in the Workplace
    TARGETING WHITE SUPREMACY IN THE WORKPLACE Michael H. LeRoy* Resurgent white supremacy is leading to segregation in some workplaces and local labor markets, long after Title VII and executive orders dismantled Jim Crow. My research conceptualizes a new way to apply the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871. Much of the law—passed to combat a white terror campaign to deny blacks and their political supporters rights equal to those of white citizens—has been struck down by court rulings. The surviving part, codified in 42 U.S.C. § 1985(3), is limited by its narrow text and Supreme Court rulings that have largely ignored congressional intent in passing this law. Using extensive legislative history, I show that Congress heard testimony from ex-Klan members about the group’s strategy to boycott black workers and segregate them in a caste system that approximated slavery. A major floor speech by Rep. Luke Poland emphasized congressional intent to interdict this economic segregation. I show the relevance of this history by analyzing four current and recent cases involving white supremacist planning and commission of acts to drive blacks, Mexicans, a Jew, and a Navajo from their workplace or a specific labor market. I demonstrate how these cases fit the demanding textual requirements to state a claim under Section 1985(3). In response to a growing number of conspiracies in a work setting to attack minorities, this study provides victims, lawyers, and courts a new way to confront today’s resurgent and aggressive white supremacy movement.     THE TURNER DIARIES’ TIES TO EXTREMISTS THE TURNER DIARIES’ TIES TO EXTREMISTS Key Points: • William Luther Pierce wrote The Turner Diaries in 1978. White nationalists have described the book as a “Handbook for White Victory.” • The book has directly influenced at least three terror attacks—in the United States, Norway, and the United Kingdom—resulting in the deaths of 248 people. The most deadly of these attacks is the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, which killed 168. • The Turner Diaries inspired the creation of a domestic white nationalist militia called The Order, which carried out a series of bank robberies and murders in the 1980s. • The book continues to act as a source of inspiration and propaganda for white nationalists, who quote the material online and threaten violence depicted in the book. Norwegian terrorist Anders Behring Breivik and Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh committed heinous acts of terrorism in their respective countries. Though their respective attacks were 16 years apart, Breivik and McVeigh drew inspiration for their malicious acts from the same source: The Turner Diaries, a 1978 novel about a race war that results in the murder of non-white minorities and the creation of a white nation. The seminal work by white nationalist William Luther Pierce, written under the pseudonym Andrew Macdonald, has influenced transnational acts of murder, robbery, and terrorism. Writing in the London Review of Books in 1997, John Sutherland described The Turner Diaries as “not the work of a Holocaust-denier (although Pierce gives us plenty of that) so much as a would-be Holocaust-repeater.”1 The Turner Diaries has become an influential work among white nationalists, inspiring violent attacks and propaganda.

    National Alliance: A Backgrounder The National Alliance (NA) is a neo-Nazi organization with headquarters on privately-owned land in Mill Point, West Virginia. From the mid-1970s until the 2002 death of the group’s founder, William Pierce, the NA was the most formidable white supremacist presence in the United States. It was also the largest neo-Nazi group in the country. Under the leadership of Erich Gliebe, who took over the organization after Pierce’s death, the NA has gone into a steep decline in terms of membership numbers and activity. In September 2013, Gliebe sent a letter to current members of the NA stating that the NA would end its membership program and now be supporter- based. Gliebe claimed that this decision came after consulting with the organization’s board of directors and key members and supporters. In his letter, Gliebe asserted that the NA would be better off without members because it would not “be such an easy target for hostile elements.” Apparently believing that the group’s tactics were no longer working, in late 2012, Gliebe began proposing that the NA change its approach to outreach. He argued that the people the NA wanted to reach would not be responsive because the group’s “enemies” had stigmatized the NA as neo-Nazi and a hate group. In reality, Gliebe has been largely unsuccessful in attracting members to the group due to his lack of leadership and charisma, as well as his seeming poor judgment and apparent financial mismanagement.     Editorial Introduction Criminology’s third war Special issue on terrorism and responses to terrorism Gary LaFree, Special Issue Editor University of Maryland oliticians in the United States have invoked the term “war” to develop national support for an all-out attack on criminal behavior on at least three separate occasions since World PWar II: the wars on crime, drugs, and terrorism. In each case, the word has been used as a metaphor to underscore the conviction that society is involved in a pitched battle and that there is no room for acquiescence or compromise. The implications of the war metaphor or a detailed examination of criminology’s role in these three campaigns is beyond the scope of this short introduction. However, I argue that several important similarities can be found across the three major crime-related political wars of the past century and that there is at least one important difference: Academic criminology was far more engaged in the wars on crime and drugs than it has been in the war on terrorism. Wars on Crime, Drugs, and Terrorism Each of the three wars can be linked directly to presidential politics. Given the United States president’s constitutional responsibility to serve as “commander in chief,” the president is the elected official who is most likely to invoke the war metaphor and be taken seriously. The phrase “war on crime” was actually already in U.S. politics by the early 1930s when Federal Bureau of Investigation Director J. Edgar Hoover sponsored a comic strip of the same name that was syndicated in newspapers across the country (Ruth and Reitz, 2003).
