"Aconitum (Common Monkshood)". Original vintage photogravure. c1900-1928. Printed 1942. Stamped with photographer's name, verso. High-grade archival paper. Ample margins. Fine, quality printing. Very good to fine condition. Image size: 10 3/16 x 7 5/8 in. (259 x 194 mm). Probably the most famous and highly sought after of all of Blossfeldt's images. Printed on one side of the paper only ("sur blanc"). An original gravure, not a later copy. [22550-2-150] 7: KARL BLOSSFELDT - Adiantum Pedatum (American Maidenhair Fern) USD 300 - 350 Karl Blossfeldt (German, 1865 - 1932). "Adiantum Pedatum (American Maidenhair Fern) [Young rolled-up fronds enlarged 8 times]". Original vintage photogravure. c1900-1928. Printed 1929. Stamped with photographer's name, verso. High-grade archival paper. Ample margins. Fine, quality printing. Very good to fine condition. Overall size: 10 7/8 x 8 3/4 in. (276 x 222 mm). Image size: 10 3/16 x 7 1/2 in. (259 x 190 mm). Original photogravure edition, not a later, modern reproduction. [22452-2- 225] 8: ANDY WARHOL - African Elephant USD 2,500 - 3,000 Andy Warhol (American, 1928 - 1987). "African Elephant". Original color analogue photograph. 1983. Signed in black marker. Printed on Kodak photographic paper. The full sheet. Fine, quality printing. Fine condition. Literature/catalogue raisonne: cf. Feldman/Schellmann II.293. Provenance: Private collection, Sweden, thence to our consignor. Overall size: 4 x 6 in. (102 x 152 mm). This photograph was taken by Warhol (probably with his Konica C35 EF) in Rupert Jasen Smith’s studio before the ‘African Elephant’ print had been signed by Warhol. Once it was developed, this photo (and the print) were then signed by Warhol. An image from the ‘Endangered Species’ series. The regular edition silkscreens were printed by Rupert Jasen Smith, New York City and published by Ronald Feldman Fine Arts, Inc., New York City. Image copyright © Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts / Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York. [29258-1-1600] 9: ANDY WARHOL - After the Party USD 60,000 - 70,000 Andy Warhol (American, 1928 - 1987). "After the Party [collage]". Collage/mixed media on fabric. 1979. Signed and dated in black marker by Warhol, lower center. Unique. Overall condition very good with no holes or tears. There are scattered spots (from Champagne?) primarily on the recto, and some minor staining, primarily on the verso. The object, a woman’s size small, is cotton with a nylon lining, wearable, with the zipper fully functional. The compositional ink was applied with skill and care. Collage elements: the word “After” consists of black sequins sewn onto “appliqué mesh” and surrounded with embroidered white yarn, the mesh then sewn to the dress; the word “The” is composed with black sequins but without the corresponding yarn, the mesh sewn to the object; the word “Party” consists of red beadwork sewn to the appliqué mesh, thence sewn to the dress. The mesh edges have not been trimmed or folded. Literature/catalogue raisonne: See Feldman/Schellmann II.183 (pg. 102) for the editioned screenprint. Overall size: 36 5/8 x 18 3/4 in. (930 x 476 mm). A unique, classic, and very rare item, previously unrecorded. The image of our object is based on, but is not identical to, Warhol’s “After the Party” screenprint of 1979 (attached to this catalogue as image #10). That print is white (with a rainbow roll drawing line) on a black background, whereas our example is black (without the rainbow roll) on a white background. The print’s image is horizontal whereas ours is vertical. In addition there is a large undefined object lower center in our work, not found in the screenprint. Thus it appears that our image was created using a screen different than that of the editioned print. This fact plus the extensive collage work marks it as one of a kind. According to ‘Gordon’s Art Reference’ the auction record for the screenprint itself, issued in an edition of 1,000, is $32,500 (Phillips, New York, April 28th, 2014, lot #63). According to an “art-worker” at Warhol’s 860 Broadway “Factory,” a socialite showed up for a late-night party there wearing this plain white dress. She left in the wee hours of the morning wrapped in a large piece of canvas, sans clothing. Over the next few days Warhol and various Warhol “Superstars” applied their magic and created the work. [29392-19-40000] 10: HENRI CARTIER-BRESSON - Ahmedabad, India USD 600 - 700 Henri Cartier-Bresson (French, 1908 - 2004).

This is why Statesmen, and more generally the leaders, always have the objective and concern to leave for posterity or to strengthen big cultural institutions. As proof of this we can quote, as examples, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, the British Museum, the Monastery of Escorial or the many American Presidential Libraries which honor the memory of the various Presidents of the United States. Since the Holy Roman Empire and, notably, in Europe during the Renaissance times cultural sponsorship has been increasingly active for the sake of art or for the sense of splendor. Nowadays, if there is a country where sponsors have a constant and decisive presence in the world of the art, this is certainly the United States. Names given to museum rooms in memory of devoted sponsors, as well as labels next to the paintings noting the donor’s name, are a very visible aspect of cultural sponsorship, especially in America.

Many of these artists’ stories remain untold as so few women achieved notoriety in the field and female artists are a relatively new area of robust academic interest. Caroline began her formal training at The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts at a pivotal moment in the American art scene. Women were entering art academies at record numbers, and Caroline was among a cadre of women who finally had access to formal education. Her family had the wealth to support her artistic interest and to secure Caroline’s position with other elite Philadelphia-area families. In addition to her training at the Academy, Caroline frequently traveled to Europe to paint and she studied at the Academie Carmen.

winter 2019 Eric Carle Illustration for Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin, Jr. Collection of Eric and Barbara Carle © 2003 Eric Carle Save the Date June 14–September 8, 2019 Scholarship and Innovation This fall, the Chrysler Museum of Art will present Thomas Jefferson, Architect: Palladian Models, Democratic Principles, and the Conflict of Ideals. It will be the first of several major exhibitions organized by the Chrysler Museum’s curatorial team. We aim to mark the Chrysler as a producer of original content and new ideas that will raise our national profile. This ambitious revitalization of the exhibition program will prioritize the skills and knowledge of our staff and bring great art to our community in fresh and compelling ways. Thomas Jefferson, Architect is a partnership with the Palladio Museum in Vicenza, Italy. It is the first major exhibition on Jefferson’s design practice since the 1970s and incorporates a wealth of new scholarship that confronts his desire to convey ideals of liberty and democracy while creating monuments that were founded on the economic and social institution of slavery. In upcoming seasons, the Chrysler will present Alma W. Thomas: A Creative Life, Americans in Spain, and Jacob Lawrence. The exhibitions are led by Chrysler curators, some in collaboration with a curator from a peer institution, and are intended to travel to other museums. A catalog with new scholarship will accompany each exhibition. Developing exhibitions in-house is not unprecedented at the Chrysler. In 2015, we presented Tseng Kwong Chi: Performing for the Camera. It traveled to three other museums and was accompanied by a catalog with new critical essays.

Abstract: During the 19th and 20th centuries, the artistic representation of the national identity of Mexicans went through processes of denial, vindication and finally exaltation, based on the demands of the different political and cultural contexts of the country and the relationship of dependence with the ideals of European art. It was not until the early 20th century that it found its full exaltation thanks to the impact of the Mexican Revolution and the progression of Mexican muralism that endowed it with a historical, indigenist and political perspective.
