Calvin Johnson (Beat Happening/K Records) Live På Moriska Paviljongen 8 Oktober 2015-09-14 14:00 CEST Calvin Johnson (Beat Happening/K records) live på Moriska Paviljongen 8 Oktober No Time For Us & Moriska Paviljongen presenterar stolt en solokonsert med Calvin Johnson. Allison Wolfe Interviewed by John Davis Los Angeles, California June 15, 2017 0:00:00 to 0:38:33 ________________________________________________________________________ 0:00:00 Davis: Today is June 15th, 2017. My name is John Davis. I’m the performing arts metadata archivist at the University of Maryland, speaking to Allison Wolfe. Wolfe: Are you sure it’s the 15th? Davis: Isn’t it? Yes, confirmed. Wolfe: What!? Davis: June 15th… Wolfe: OK. Davis: 2017. Wolfe: Here I am… Davis: Your plans for the rest of the day might have changed. Wolfe: [laugh] Davis: I’m doing research on fanzines, particularly D.C. fanzines. When I think of you and your connection to fanzines, I think of Girl Germs, which as far as I understand, you worked on before you moved to D.C. Is that correct? Wolfe: Yeah. I think the way I started doing fanzines was when I was living in Oregon—in Eugene, Oregon—that’s where I went to undergrad, at least for the first two years. So I went off there like 1989-’90. And I was there also the year ’90-’91. Something like that. For two years. And I met Molly Neuman in the dorms. She was my neighbor. And we later formed the band Bratmobile. But before we really had a band going, we actually started doing a fanzine. And even though I think we named the band Bratmobile as one of our earliest things, it just was a band in theory for a long time first. But we wanted to start being expressive about our opinions and having more of a voice for girls in music, or women in music, for ourselves, but also just for things that we were into.

Bret, Heather and Calvin explore the more sinister aspects of life, with an eye towards the relief that can be found in its simpler pleasures. “Melancholy” is a word that has been used to describe this approach, though Black Candy does include many optimistic moments. If you like your pop music effervescent and carefree, there’s “T.V. Girl” and “Other Side” to polish your bike to. If you like it black, here’s a blast of playhouse on fire, pajama party and haunted shadow to propel your day. Originally a 1989 K release, available on Rough Trade in the U.K., Black Candy was re-issued on Sub/Pop in 1993. Included on here is the original version of “Cast a Shadow”, covered by Yo La Tengo and Cub. Black Candy has been out of print for several years on CD except as a part of the Crashing Through (KLP115) box set of Beat Happening mate- rial. • Place and Punk: the Heritage Significance of Grunge in the Pacific North West
Place and Punk: The heritage significance of Grunge in the Pacific North West William Kenneth Smith MA By Research University of York Archaeology May 2017 Abstract Academic institutions and the heritage industry are now actively seeking to understand the wider social, cultural and economic processes which surround the production and consumption of popular music histories. Music is a local creation; it is created through a flux of internal and external influences, and is bound up in questions of economy, networks, art, identity and technology. In the early 1990s the Pacific North West of the United States of America gave birth to what became known as the musical genre of ‘grunge’. It developed into a distinctive genre, presenting a style and sound which propagated within the confines of a specific time and place. As construction sites continue to emerge throughout the Pacific North West, the impact of music still provides an essential contribution to the regions character and culture. Despite this, countercultural pasts are vulnerable; not only to the passage of time but also the processes of development, gentrification and marginalization. This research explores the heritage significance of the Pacific North West punk scene. It presents a historiography of punk and an appraisal of the scholarly discourse surrounding place. This study utilizes artifacts, sites and oral histories to explore countercultural material and memories as well as the form and function of punk. Themes such as geography and environment are enfranchised into the discussion as ethnography and multidisciplinary approaches are applied to make a unique contribution to what is an essential and timely discussion regarding people, culture, heritage and place.

Hardcore punk-rock had been mostly a male phenomenon. Girls were excluded from hardcore the same way they were excluded in society from many other male-only rituals, whether street gangs or USA football. The "riot grrrrls" movement of the 1990s changed the sociopolitical landscape of punk-rock by introducing the "girl factor" into the equation of frustration/ depression/ desperation/ anger. The riot-grrrrls movement originated largely in and around Seattle (Olympia, to be precise), and indeed it was Seattle that boasted the most fertile scene for female-only bands. The movement's manifesto was the article "Women, sex and rock and roll", published by "Puncture" in 1989. The first radio program to address the angry young girls was "Your Dream Girl", conducted by Lois Maffeo on Olympia's KAOS. One of the earliest riot-grrrrls was Molly Neuman, who joined Allison Wolfe to create the fanzine "Girl Germs", one of the main alternative media for college girls. In the summer of 1991 they celebrated themselves at the Olympia campus, shouting their slogan "Revolution Girl Style Now!" The mood had been changing throughout the 1980s: the magazine "Sassy" had been founded already in 1987 as an alternative, not afraid to tackle brutal themes, to the conventional magazines for teenage girls.
