Palavras-Chave: O Homem de Aço, Cinema, Marketing, Licenciamento, Product placement 4 ABSTRACT This work studies the case of the film "Man of Steel" (2013) and aims to understand the role the cinematographic marketing played in the promotion of this feature film. Being a production based on a superhero comic book, genre which has received great attention from the Hollywood studios, the first part of this work gathers knowledge on the comics origin and market, its relation to cinema and the marketing insights applied to the movie industry. In addition to traditional tactics like posters, trailers and interviews, it was found that the action of associating the brand of this film with the brands of other companies is an important cinematographic marketing strategy, with emphasis on the licensing and merchandising actions. Using as base the "life cycle of a cinematographic work" developed by Kuazaqui (2015), the material that became public through the movies' official commuinication channels was observed, and the main actions related to the cinematographic marketing were identified. The strategies used by the marketing of "Man of Steel" proved to be a fundamental factor for promoting the film and expecting financial return before the premiere. However, such exposition and other agreements made with brands alone do not guarantee that the expectations around the production will be achieved. Crisis of Infinite Intertexts! Continuity as Adaptation in the Superman Multimedia Franchise Jack Peterson Teiwes ORCID identifier 0000-0001-8956-1602 Doctor of Philosophy November 2015 School of Culture and Communication The University of Melbourne Submitted in total fulfillment of the requirements of the PhD degree Produced on archival quality paper Abstract Since first appearing as a comic book character over three quarters of a century ago, Superman was not only the first superhero, spawning an entire genre of imitators, but also quickly became one of the most widely disseminated multi-media entertainment franchises. This achieved a degree of intergenerational cultural dissemination that far surpasses his comic book fandom. Yet despite an unprecedented degree of adaptation into other media from radio, newspaper strips, film serials, animation, feature films, video games and television, Superman’s ongoing comic books have remained in unbroken publication, developing a long and complex history of narrative renewal and reinvention. This thesis investigates the multifaceted intertextuality between the comic book portrayals of Superman and its many adaptations over the years, including how such retellings in other media have a generally stronger cultural impact, which exerts in turn an adaptive influence upon these continuing comics’ internalised narrative continuity. I shall argue that Superman comics, as a case study for the wider phenomenon in the superhero genre, demonstrate via their frequent revisions and relaunches of continuity, a process of deeply palimpsestuous self-adaptation. The Introduction positions my research methodology in relation to intertextual theory, with an emphasis on providing terminological clarity, while Chapter 1 expands into a literature review on pertinent key scholarship on adaptation studies and the comics studies field specifically.

Central rogues gallery In alphabetical order (with issue and date of first appearance): Villain First appearance Description Atlas 1st Issue Special #1 A former one-shot Jack Kirby character recently revamped as a morally ambiguous antihero, Atlas has a (April 1975) crystal which gives him strength to rival Superman. Adventures of Joseph Martin's superhuman powers manifested after exposure to the Dominators' gene-bomb, the film Superman #483 buff began to hallucinate that he was a 1930s movie hero called the Atomic Skull and that Superman was (October 1991) his nemesis. Bizarro Superboy #68 Bizarro was created when Superboy was exposed to a "duplicating ray", and was later destroyed in the (October 1958) same story. Action Comics #254 Lex Luthor exposed Kal-El, now Superman, to another duplicating ray, this time creating an adult Bizarro. (July 1959) This Bizarro later created a Bizarro Lois and left with her into Space. In accordance with the science fiction concepts of Superman stories of the era, Bizarro relocated to "the Bizarro World," a cubical planet called Htrae (Earth spelled backwards) which operated under "Bizarro logic" (it was a crime to do anything good or right) and which Bizarro populated with inverted versions of Superman’s supporting cast and other DC heroes.
