Aron, Chair This dissertation explores the social, cultural, and economic history of horse stealing among both American Indians and Euro Americans in Lincoln County, Nebraska from 1860 to 1890. It shows how American Indians and Euro-Americans stole from one another during the Plains Indian Wars and explains how a culture of theft prevailed throughout the region until the late-1870s. But as homesteaders flooded into Lincoln County during the 1870s and 1880s, they demanded that the state help protect their private property. These demands encouraged state building efforts in the region, which in turn drove horse stealing – and the thieves themselves – underground. However, when newspapers and local leaders questioned the efficacy of these efforts, citizens took extralegal steps to secure private property and augment, or subvert, the law. -

1 Lands of the Lakota: Policy, Culture and Land Use on the Pine Ridge Reservation Joseph Stromberg Senior Honors Thesis Environmental Studies and Anthropology Washington University in St. Louis 2 Abstract Land is invested with tremendous historical and cultural significance for the Oglala Lakota Nation of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Widespread alienation from direct land use among tribal members also makes land a key element in exploring the roots of present-day problems—over two thirds of the reservation’s agricultural income goes to non-Natives, while the majority of households live below the poverty line. In order to understand how current patterns in land use are linked with federal policy and tribal culture, this study draws on three sources: (1) archival research on tribal history, especially in terms of territory loss, political transformation, ethnic division, economic coercion, and land use; (2) an account of contemporary problems on the reservation, with an analysis of current land policy and use pattern; and (3) primary qualitative ethnographic research conducted on the reservation with tribal members. Findings indicate that federal land policies act to effectively block direct land use. Tribal members have responded to policy in ways relative to the expression of cultural values, and the intent of policy has been undermined by a failure to fully understand the cultural context of the reservation. The discussion interprets land use through the themes of policy obstacles, forced incorporation into the world-system, and resistance via cultural sovereignty over land use decisions. Dear Reader: In Spring 2005, as part of Cochise College’s 40th anniversary celebration, we published the first installment of Cochise College: A Brave Beginning by retired faculty member Jack Ziegler. Our reason for doing so was to capture for a new generation the founding of Cochise College and to acknowledge the contributions of those who established the College’s foundation of teaching and learning. A second, major watershed event in the life of the College was the establishment of the Sierra Vista Campus. Dr. Ziegler has once again conducted interviews and researched archived news paper accounts to create a history of the Sierra Vista Campus. As with the first edition of A Brave Beginning, what follows is intended to be informative and entertaining, capturing not only the recorded events but also the memories of those who were part of expanding Cochise College. Dr. Karen Nicodemus As the community of Sierra Vista celebrates its 50th anniversary, the College takes great pleas ure in sharing the establishment of the Cochise College Sierra Vista Campus. It was good. 3 Excerpt from Legends of the West: Spotted Tail said, “Now, let me tell you the worst thing about the Wasicu, and the hardest thing to understand: They do not understand choice...” This caused a murmur of consternation among the Lakota. Choice was choice. What was not there to not understand? Choice is the bedrock tenet of our very view of reality. The choices a person makes are quite literally what makes that person into who they are. Who else can tell you how to be you? One follows one’s own nature and one’s own inner voice; to us this is sacrosanct. You can choose between what makes life beautiful and what makes life ugly; you can choose whether to paint yourself in a certain manner or whether to wear something made of iron — or, as was the case with the famous Cheyenne warrior Roman Nose — you could choose to never so much as touch iron. In battle you choose whether you should charge the enemy first, join the main thrust of attack, or take off on your own and try to steal his horses. -

My sisters and I were so used to packing up and hitting the road in the family station wagon (later a minivan), that our childhood trips blur together. Oftentimes we visited our paternal grandparents in Sidney, Nebraska, or our maternal grandparents in Lincoln, Nebraska. But on special occasions we would take lengthy road trips that ended with destinations in the Appalachian Mountains, the Gulf of Mexico, Yellowstone National Park, and Myrtle Beach. As an ―East River‖ South Dakotan, driving six hours west to visit the Black Hills was hardly as exciting as going to the beach. -

BATTERY E, 1ST ARTILLERY AT WOUNDED KN:CE-DECEMBER, 1890 by Larry D. Roberts South Dakota State University By 1889 the Indian wars of the American West were mostly memories. Some of the first battles between the soldiers and the Indians, such as the Wagon Box fight and Custer's Washita, were more than twenty years in the past. However, one itnal chapter remained in the story of the conflict between the white man and the red rna n- - the Sioux campaign of 1890. The" Battle" of Wounded Knee was the principle encounter of that winter campoign, and it was more of a tragic accident than a clash between two openly hostile antaganists. Wounded Kne e, and the events which led to it, have been the subjects of many historical works. Unfortunately some of these treatments apply a liberal amount of fantasy to the basic facts. The actions of Captain Allyn Capron's Hotchkiss guns have been the subject of as much distortion as any other aspect of the tragedy at Wounded Knee. It Is appropriate to clarify some of the distortions concerning the guns by relating the detaUs of the battery and its performance on December 29, 1890. 'Ihe Messiah, a paiute named Wovoka, claimed to be a chosen messenger from God. His doctrine proclaimed the return of the buffalo and of long deceased Indians to a land devoid of the white man. -

The Influence of American Discourse on the Mission to Armenia

The Influence of American Discourse on the Mission to Armenia (Under the direction of Professor Sarah Shields) In August 1919, President Wilson commissioned the American Military Mission to Armenia to investigate the post-World War I situation in Anatolia and report recommendations to Congress on potential American responsibilities in the region. The President expected the final report, composed by Major General James Harbord, to present impartial observations consistent with the dispassionate language characteristic of military prose. This would have allowed Congress to base its decisions on military judgements rather than on existing partisan reports which favored diplomatic or humanitarian agendas. Though Harbord’s report predominately exhibited the institutional style he adopted as an officer and reflected a hardened worldview shaped over his thirty-year career, his lifetime exposure to American media narratives on Armenians was indelibly present as well. Examining Harbord’s sources reveals that he had absorbed competing public and military narratives that needed reconciliation in his report. I analyzed 23,399 articles from American newspapers, alongside pamphlets published by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions and diplomatic reports produced by the Inquiry, to trace discursive trends on Armenians as they evolved in the United States.
