The World View of the Anonymous Author of the Greek Chronicle of the Tocco
THE WORLD VIEW OF THE ANONYMOUS AUTHOR OF THE GREEK CHRONICLE OF THE TOCCO (14th-15th centuries) by THEKLA SANSARIDOU-HENDRICKX THESIS submitted in the fulfilment of the requirements for the degree DOCTOR OF ARTS in GREEK in the FACULTY OF ARTS at the RAND AFRIKAANS UNIVERSITY PROMOTER: DR F. BREDENKAMP JOHANNESBURG NOVEMBER 2000 EFACE When I began with my studies at the Rand Afrikaans University, and when later on I started teaching Modern Greek in the Department of Greek and Latin Studies, I experienced the thrill of joy and the excitement which academic studies and research can provide to its students and scholars. These opportunities finally allowed me to write my doctoral thesis on the world view of the anonymous author of the Greek Chronicle of the Tocco. I wish to thank all persons who have supported me while writing this study. Firstly, my gratitude goes to Dr Francois Bredenkamp, who not only has guided me throughout my research, but who has always been available for me with sound advice. His solid knowledge and large experience in the field of post-classical Greek Studies has helped me in tackling Byzantine Studies from a mixed, historical and anthropological view point. I also wish to render thanks to my colleagues, especially in the Modern Greek Section, who encouraged me to continue my studies and research. 1 am indebted to Prof. W.J. Henderson, who has corrected my English. Any remaining mistakes in the text are mine. Last but not least, my husband, Prof. B. Hendrickx, deserves my profound gratitude for his patience, encouragement and continuous support. -

Gjirokastra Despotate and Gjin Zenebish

National Museum of History. Tirana, Albania. Spiro Nika Academy of Albanological Studies. Tirana, Albania. Abstract The Zenebish (Byzantine form Zenevisi, Italian Zenebisi or Sarbissa) represent a large Albanian feudal family of Southern Arberia centered on the city of Gjirokastra (1304-1444). Ottoman historians and chroniclers, according to Eqrem bey Vlora, note that the Zenebish family originated in the Zagoria region of Gjirokastra, specifying that it was precisely the support between Gjirokastra and Përmet. The Vilayet of Gjirokastra, as part of the Sandzak of Arbër, in the Ottoman register of 1431-1432, is also known as the "Vilayet of Zenebish". Turkish professor Halil Inalçikk in his 1960 study "Sandzak Arvanid" marks the "Lands of Zenebissi-ili" or Zenbis and gives an accurate description of the ethnic panorama of the southern Arbëresh areas of 1431. Ottoman records prove that the Dropulli Field inhabited by the Albanian population. In 1410, the Ottomans took Gjin Zenebish's son hostage and sent him to the Sultan's court in Edirne (Adrianople) to "educate him with the norms of Ottoman behavior." In Ottoman historiography, Gjin's son is known as Hamza Bey, a military leader, but who, like Gjergj Kastriot Skënderbeu, returns to his homeland and the Christian religion. After 1414, Gjin Zenebishi was forced to settle on the island of Corfu, which was under Venetian rule to escape the Ottoman rule. -

Ethnogenesis. Like most of the Balkan nations, the Albanians, too, have a multifold and complex identity, as well as their own contradictory and difficult historical fate. Western historiography regards as "perplexing the ethnic variety in Southeastern Europe, which is the result of age-old processes of assimilation by local and foreign elements. What is more, in this case we do not have a succession of different ethnic groups, but rather different forms emerging from ascending layers". 1 Scholarship has embraced as sufficiently convincing the thesis that the origins of the Albanian ethnos go back to ancient Illyrians. Of course, this bottom layer was overlaid by Greek colonists' influence in the coastal area, and Romanisation imposed by the legions and the garrison towns in Macedonia and along the Dalmatian-Albanian seashore. The traces of the German tribes of Ostrogoths and Visigoths have been lost, but, on the other hand, the Slavs expansion in Southeastern Europe during the 6th century led to a substantial change in the ethnic map of the region. As a matter of fact, a legend has been told among the Albanians that they come from the same tribe as Alexander the Great - a megalomaniacal claim common to other Balkan nations too. He is attributed an order given during one of the wars between Macedonians and Greeks, put in a phrase used to date in the Albanian language: "Go, strike, slash, let no stone be left under your feet." To make this legend sound convincingly enough, Albanians assert that the quoted words have been cut into a stone of the Acropolis. -

Is Skanderbeg, the National Hero of Albanians, Present in the Paintings of Vittorio Carpaccio?!
Volume 4, issue 5, 2015 e-ISSN: 1857-8187 p-ISSN: 1857-8179 Review Article History Is Skanderbeg, the National Hero of Albanians, Present in the Paintings of Vittorio Keywords: immigration, paintings, religion, Carpaccio?! arbëror community, symbol, etc. Irakli Koçollari Luarasi University, Tirana, Albania. Abstract There is yet no comprehensive and detailed study about the great presence of Arbëror community in the city and surroundings of Venice, in the Medieval period. A little has been written about these immigrants of Arbërore lands, about the circumstances while they left, the specific times of their movement to these areas, their social organizations in the new homeland, contributions in political, military, cultural and literary life, assimilation and the tracks they left behind, etc. In the beginnings of the fourteenth century, while the Ottoman invasions extended to the main areas of Arbërore territories, a considerable part of local population started to move to Italian coasts from the nearest Calabrian coasts to the territories of Italian Republics and kingdoms, such as: Ancona, Venice, Naples, Genoa, etc. Generally, the perception that massive immigrations of Albanian to the Italian peninsula occurred after the death of our national hero Gjergj Kastriotit Skënderbeu, fall of the Anti-Ottoman endurance and capitulation of Shkodra at the Ottomans by the Venetians, i.e. after the 1478. WHEN DID THE FIRST ARBËRORE IMMIGRANTS MOVE TO VENICE? The contacts of Arbërore world with Venetians date back to early years. They cover roots at least since the thirteenth century, the decade when this Republic boosted to its apex and consolidated the positions of a dominating marine power in the Adriatic, Mediterranean and beyond.
