Half day trip to discover Dracula’s story. Surrounded by an aura of mystery and legend and perched high atop a 200-foot-high rock, Bran Castle owes its fame to its imposing towers and turrets as well as to the myth created around Bram Stocker's Dracula. Built on the site of a Teutonic Knights stronghold dating from 1212, the castle was first documented in an act issued by Louis I of Hungary on November 19, 1377, giving the Saxons of Kronstadt (Brasov) the privilege to build the Citadel. Although Stoker never visited Transylvania, the Irish author relied on research and his vivid imagination to create the dark and intimidating stomping ground of Count Dracula, leading to persistent myths that it was once the home of Vlad Tepes, ruler of Walachia. While the association with Dracula is sketchy at best, the castle continues to hold a strong attraction for all fans of the Count. From 1920 to 1957 Bran served as royal residence, a gift of the people of Brasov to Queen Marie of Romania. The castle is now a museum open to tourists, displaying art and furniture collected by Queen Marie. Lunch in traditional house. Return in Sinaia. Price in euro / person: No of persons 1 pax 2 pax 3 pax 4-7 pax 8-12 pax 13-18 pax 19-24 pax 260 € 170 € 115 € 99 € 69 € 56 € 48 € The above price includes: 1 lunch (3 courses + mineral water) - English speaking guide from arrival till departure - Air-conditioned car (for 1-3 pax), van, minibus or coach for all the above itinerary and program; - Entrance fees to all the above mentioned museums, castles and sites - All Romanian taxes. Urban Politics and the Preservation of Cultural Heritage in Post-Socialist Bucharest By Ionescu Daniela Submitted to Central European University Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Supervisors: Professor Daniel Monterescu Professor Andreas Dafinger CEU eTD Collection Budapest, Hungary 2011 1 ABSTRACT With the concern of a boundary between the state, the market and the civil society the present paper tries to understand a fine section within the broader debate of an urbanization process in post-socialist Romania, to gain a deeper perception on the renovation and selling process of old nationalized buildings declared representative for the cultural local heritage. This focus implies an understanding of the social space as incorporating social actions, as a means through which the social actors (architects, state officials and journalists) develop a general discourse or engage in a representational space by attaching meaning and regarding the nationalized houses as statements of esthetical perception, means of increasing the cultural heritage or excuses found by the political class in the process of establishing their positions in the field of power. In addition, the paper addresses the construction and negotiation process of cultural heritage within a general framework of urban renewal, not as a way of reclaiming the city history but rather as a means in the reinterpretation of the politics of accumulation.
