University of Cape Town ABSTRACT Micha Yosef Berdichewski (1865 - 1921) is considered by many to be the most influential Jewish author of his generation. His literary activity encompassed both fiction and non-fiction. Berdichewski's fictional world has been termed "a spiritual organic unity" (Almagor 1968) inasmuch as his hero tends to reappear in many like-guises across the various stories and there is a great deal of repetition of themes, characters, motifs and even semantic elements throughout his work. The present work aims to show that the seeming uniformity in Berdichewski's writing is misleading. It postulates that the identity of feature that marks the Berdichewskian text is not productive of sameness, but rather that it promotes greater textual density through the adherence of variability within correlates. It purports that though Berdichewski's apparent stereotyping is due, at least in part, to an abiding concern with some central issues - and thus that his various narratives may be seen as the continuing working out of these concerns - these are never fully resolved but only interacted with from varying, quite disparate, perspectives. -

Title: Polish Demons, Yiddish Demonology: Kawalerowicz’s Mother Joan of the Angels and The Dybbuk Author: Natalia Vesselova, University of Ottawa In an obituary published in The Independent, John Riley quotes one of the last interviews given by Jerzy Kawalerowicz, where he declares pointedly: “I do not think it possible to find in my work the influence of any school or director.” His films contradict this unpersuasive statement. In my presentation I am going to reveal and analyze the influence exerted on Kawalerowicz’s Mother Joan of the Angels (Matka Joanna od Aniołów, 1961) by Michał Waszyński’s Yiddish-Polish film classic The Dybbuk (Der Dibuk, 1937). In Kawalerowicz’s film, a priest comes to a rabbi (both roles played by the same actor) in search of an answer to the mystery of demons possessing the Ursulines in the local nunnery. The rabbi refuses any revelation, saying that he cannot summarize in a few words the knowledge gained by generations of his forefathers, and admits having no clear explanation of demonic nature. What he tells the priest, though, is the story of his own unsuccessful exorcism of a girl possessed by the spirit of her dead lover. This is an exact reproduction of The Dybbuk’s plot, so that the rabbi himself can be viewed as a character imported from the Jewish film. In addition to the parable of love as diabolical possession, Kawalerowicz borrows from the earlier film’s symbols (the white bridal garments), narrative elements (opening one’s soul to evil spirits voluntarily), and visual effects (chiaroscuro and camera technique). -

Overview: For many audiences, understanding of the PalestinianIsraeli conflict comes mainly from the media news of violence and of political friction dominate the airwaves, and we sometimes forget about the ordinary Palestinian and Israeli citizens involved. To get at the human element of the PalestinianIsraeli conflict, students will read, discuss, and reflect on stories from and/or about Palestine and Israel. Units are designed by theme/topic, and each unit contains readings from both Palestinian and Israeli perspectives on each theme/topic.This curriculum was designed for a grade 12 course. Timing: Suggested class periods: 21+. This curriculum may, of course, be shortened or lengthened depending on schedule, students, etc. This curriculum may also be developed into a semester long course. «The Holy Letters Had Never Joined into Any Name as Mine» Notes on the Name of the Author in Agnon’s Work1 Yaniv Hagbi University of Amsterdam 1. Nomen est Omen As the famous Latin proverb testifies, the correlation between characters’ names and their nature, occupation, destiny or history is a literary trope very common in world-literature. It is known at least since the Bible. Abraham received his name because God is going to make him «the father of multitudes» or in Hebrew “av hamon goyim” (Gen. 17:5). Pharos’ daughter’s (surprisingly) good command of the language of the slaves, enabled her to name her Hebrew foundling, Moshe, saying, “I drew him out of the water (meshitihu)”» (Ex. 2:10).2 As one may presume this literary tool is only part of larger literary device. Proper names, i.e. not only persons’ names but all names of specific objects such as places, plants, animals etc., can bear literary aesthetic value. That latter, broader phenomenon is also known as onomastics (literary onomastics). The narrower manifestation of that phenomenon, with which we started, i.e. the relationship between a name and its human bearers, might be dubbed as anthropo-onomastics or anthroponym.3 It is of no surprise that the use of that trope is very common in the work of Shmuel Yosef Agnon (Tchatchkes) (1888-1970), an author well-versed in both Jewish literature and thought, as well as in world-literature.4 In the following article we shall see several unique uses Agnon makes in that trope while trying to account for possible reasons lying at the core of his poetical worldview. -

1 The Soundtrack of Israel: The Story of Israel at 66 through the songs of Arik Einstein Israel turns sixty six this year and a so much has happened in this seemingly short lifetime. Every war, every peace treaty, every struggle, and every accomplishment has left its impact on the ever changing character of the Jewish State. But throughout all of these ups and downs, all of the conflicts and all of the progress, there has been one voice that has consistently spoken for the Jewish nation, one voice that has represented Israelis for all 66 years and will continue to represent a people far into the future. That is the voice of Arik Einstein. Einstein’s music, referred to by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as the “soundtrack of Israel,” transcended generations. Einstein often took the words of high-brow Israeli poets such as Chaim Nachman Bialik, Rahel, Nathan Alterman and Avraham Halfi and turned them into rock anthems sung by vibrant Israeli youth. Einstein captured the heart and soul of Israelis old and young. For every Zionist, peacenik, settler, hopeless romantic, nostalgia aficionado and child (or child at heart) in Israel, there is at least one Arik Einstein song that speaks to them. For every historic Israeli moment, there is an Arik Einstein song that represents the emotion of a united nation, or a shuttered people. Although fairly unknown outside of Israel, Arik Einstein was loved by all, and mourned by all after his sudden death in November of 2013, when tens of thousands of Israelis joined together to pay their respects to the iconic Sabra at a memorial service in Rabin Square in Tel Aviv. -

CONTENT This first major retrospective of Yiddish cinema comprises films made in the United States and Europe from the 1920s through the 1980s. The exhibition includes melodramas, farces, tragedies, musical comedies, and documentaries that capture the talents of such international stars as Ida Kaminska, Lila Lee, Solomon Mikhoels, Molly Picon, and Maurice Schwartz. While only a fragment of the once vibrant world of Yiddish theater and cinema survives, these films depict the concerns and values of Yiddish culture and preserve the nuances of the Yiddish language. Chronicling the struggle for Jewish identity on both sides of the Atlantic, the exhibition features Yiddle with His Fiddle (1936) and The Dybbuk (1937), from Poland; Jewish Luck (1925) and The Return of Nathan Beck (1934), from Russia; East and Hest (1923), from Austria; and Uncle Moses (1932), Tevye (1939), and God, Man, and Devil (1950), from the United States. Several recent films, including Brussels Transit (1980), from Belgium, and If They Give, Take (1983), from Israel, offer a contemporary glimpse of Yiddish-language drama. -
